No More Bombing, Dec. 7, 1941

I am a brand new member of this group and the first thing I noticed was a large red "No Bombing" logo followed by dates to remember. I"m all for "No More Bombing," God knows only a fool wouldn't be, but I have a "Date to Remember." Dec. 7, 1941. Let's get this section right. Place that date first. Pardon sir, I don't dispute that the date mentioned is one of many of import, but I have a dumb question: How does a dude wind up with the user name Heidi?

"Heidi" was a beautiful Boxer, aged eleven years, who had to be put down due to cancer a few months ago. After many years of living and following grandparents, parents, siblings and many valuable friends to the grave, the parting with this special animal seemed to affect myself greater than any other event. Displaced values? You decide for I do not pretend to understand. I thought she should be remembered in Cyber-space. Jim

I can't think of a more fitting memorial for your fallen friend. I just had to put down our 13 year old Aussie Shepherd. But somehow, using "Zulie" for a nickname just doesn't work for me. I have a GSD named Heidi by the way. Cool name.

By the way, the logo you saw was probably Scottish2's. It commemorates the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on Aug 6th and 9th 1945. He moderates the Politics forum.

My father narrowly missed being at Pearl Harbor. He joined the Navy a few years before, and had been serving on a destoyer in the North Atlantic patrolling for U-boats. Just before the Japanese attack, the Navy realized it needed experienced sailors for the battle-wagons at Pearl, and asked him and several of his friends to volunteer. He decided he wouldn''t be able to handle the discipline on a larger ship and elected to stay with the destroyer. Some of his friends volunteered and died at Pearl Harbor. As the result of many hours on deck in exteme cold, my father has severe arthritis in his feet, and has difficulty walking. I have an uncle who drove landing craft in the Pacific, and who might well have been in the first wave had an attack on the Japanese home islands been necessary. You would have a hard time convincing them and others who suffered at the hands of the Japanese that ending the war in any way possible was a bad thing. I have an old flying buddy who was preparing to be a first wave grunt--one of those expected to die so others could eventually make it on the beach. There are few days when he is not thankful for the bomb having been dropped.
Let us all pray that it never need be dropped again.

All I am going to say is that I have seen this thread and yes as Andylucky pointed out it's part of my signature, but any answwer given here would be to hot to handle here. And I stand by my signature after visiting both Pearl and Hiroshima in the last year. Pearl just a few weeks ago in Nov and Hiroshima last February.

We have a Aunt who was a Navy Nurse at Pearl Harbor. The stories she tell's are bone chilling. She said they ran out of medical supplies so quickly while the shooting was still going on. Very moving! I'll tell you another place that is over whelming to visit is "Gettysburg " .

Well read the stories of the days and months following Hiroshima and Nagasaki when they had no materials cause all burned up and then you will understand my signature better. People running for the rivers to cool off burns not realizing this would not help at all instead they needed cooking oil to help ward off the problems caused by radiation burns.

People even those that were in Pearl can't fully understand the troubles that come associated with an Atomic bomb being exploded over your head. As I said not going to go into why I believe as I do as that is political in nature but hopefully this helps clarify it a little better.
