It is actually very weird that people hate bagpipes in Finland/Northern europe so much. "It's just a horrible high noise with no sense at all"... yeah right.

Yesterday when i was on my way home on a train my phone started ringing.
And guess what ringing tone i have? Yes, Scotland the brave played with bagpipes!
I love the song, but other people on the train obviously didn't. Everyone looked me like "shut that s***t down or you'll die!".. yes i am an evil genious so i decided to let my phone to ring for a little longer just to make people mad. thumbup.gif

I have loads of friends and our family is quite big and still i know like 2 people who like the sound of a bagpipe.

When i get my own bagpipe i think the whole city will run away when i start playing. evil.gif

Love the pipes! I'm sure it's like any other instrument - when someone is bad, it's really bad! But I love the sound of bagpipes! Celtic music would not be the same without them!

Do you have the actual recording of bagpipes or those annoying tinney sounding synthesizer ringtones that try to sound like bagpipes. Now those are annoying no matter what song or instrument it is.

highland pipes are loud... i have been on stage with them... loud to the point of pain when you are that close. i love the small pipes and northumbrian pipes they are beautiful.

the hurdy gurdy also was a hated instrument back in the middle ages... the players didnt know how to keep them tuned and set up and indeed they sound horrid when they arent set up right.... they sound a wee bit like bagpipes... something for the scotsman with asthma .... *L*

me i like the pipes... but not an hour at a time... the pipes are quite finicky to set up and anything out of tune sounds bad...and may i suggest that you start off with a practice chanter and find someone to instruct you they are not easy to play... you dont want to fuel the fire of their hate... they may burn your pipe...*chuckle*

by the way do you know why bagpipers march when they play.....

they are trying to get away from the sound... *L* thumbs_up.gif note.gif

Love bagpipes and so do most people, if they are played right.
Of course there is the other side of the coin. Some just do not
have good tastes in music.......... partytime.gif goof.gif

I like the bagpipes too, especially when they're paired with drums. I don't know why some people are so set against them- I guess like Donajhi said, they just have bad taste in music! lol

My plate is sooo full right now I don't have time, but, when I retire or maybe after the rest of the kids move away, I do plan to learn to play the pipes. I guess it's in the Hendeson blood- we were pipers in the house of MacDonald during the Glencoe massacre. The Henderson name is associated with pipes through history and I plan to claim my heritage one day. I already play the banjo, guitar, harmonica, drums, and a little mandolin.

I do love the sound of pipes and drums- one of my favs is Albannach.

I love the bagpipes as well and I am orginally from Germany. Even as a young person this was the only music I listened to besides all the Rock and Pop.

My husband also wasn't to fond of them until he heard them played in modern music at Walt Disney World by Off Kilter. Since then he got a bit into it. He got himself some songs from me from Gaelic Storm, The Real MacKenzies and some others.

I guess he start getting better taste when it comes to music.

Just think of it this way

I love the pipes and always have. I know many that don't. I've been told they take getting use to because of their other worldly sound. I asked my Gram once about why they sent the pipers out before the soldiers. She told me the song of the pipes was often thought of as the song of the devil or the wailing of the banshees and would put fear into the enemy. She also told me only a true Scotsman could truly love the song of the pipes.
