QUOTE (Danann @ Jan 13 2004, 10:05 AM)
Had to put my oar in. I have been using LINUX for a long time, and I think that Mandrake also has the best release right now, but if you are used to being a windows junky, you might see things more familiar with RedHat, but I don't know if they are still doing free downloads. I get my stuff supplied for me from the government since I am a developer and security admin for them.

The LINUX downloads are very popular, especially after a new release, which just happened not too long ago in Mandrake's case. Its not unusual for it to take several days to download. I would see if you can download faster elsewhere, but keep your current one moving, so that you don't lose your place in that queue just in case.

By all means, welcome! I been a Linux junky for a few years. I love it, except my hardward is getting old, I'm considering a workstation for www.pogolinux.com after my tax refund comes around.

Question I am on highspeed and how long should this take to transfer from web to my system? For some reason it is saying about 1 day IE 24 hours roughly to download. This sound right? NOw wondering if it is as you did say the info would fill 3 CD's so...

Try another FTP site. That site you mentioned apparently is very busy. Try another site. The time it takes depends on your connection and how busy the site is. Some of this sites are kinda busy during the day, mostly students. Yes, it could take a day, but try another site. Mandrake has about 20 or so "mirror" sites to download from in the US

Do I need to do the drive format before rebooting or will the install do this for me?

Once you boot off the 1st CD, it will completed format your hardrive, not immediately, but a few steps later. You will asked questions like, mouse config, time config. etc. I don't remember the exact sequence.

Here is a sample of what a FTP download site will look like.
ftp://ftp.tux.org/pub/distributions/mandrake/iso/
Notice the 3 Mandrake 9.2 ISOs cd1,cd2 cd3. It an FTP site is busy, try another one until you find one that will give you a reasonably fast download.

Hi

Some of you have suggested I try Linux and was thinking of trying this on my older IBM just out of curiousity if for no other reason. Now I plan on formating that drive as I have everything I need moved to this system of CD so I can format that drive and no worries. Now I will download the software on this system and burn to CD will this CD automatically run the install when I redo the new system or will I have to go in through DOS and run the program. Could someone give some very simple instructions that even the most novice of user can use in case we have others wanting to try this. I was hoping to make this just a Linux system so no windows is needed unless required to install this. Can some one help please smile.gif

Bare in mind I have never even seen a Linux system before so in a sense I am a novice for this OS.

ALso where is the best site to download and which version? Was looking the Linux site over and seems like they have different versions for different uses. I plan on just using this as a test system that would be a normal system nothing fancy smacy just for normal usage. Can you send a link with what file to download if there are multiple choices.

Try Mandrake Linux @ http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/ftp.php3#iso. Download the ISO images ( there are three) of Mandrake 9.2 (current stable release) to your WIndows system( create a separate folder) and then burn each ISO image to a CD-R/CD-RW. Each ISO image will just about fill the CD. Make sure you label each one carefully. Power up your old system you saild you were going to use and put the first CD in and reboot off that CD. Once you have booted off the first CD, there wiil be an installation GUI interface. Surf around the Mandrake site and there are some screen shots of the installation. There are many Linux distros (distributions), but Mandrake, Red Hat and Suse. I tried Mandrake 9.2 recently and I liked it. Get this much done, and I will be happy to help you install/tweak it. Need help downloading let me know.

[I wouldn't suggest spending anything for these so called cheap highspeed deals like netzero or earthlink though earthlinks free if you have their service but when I tried earthlinks in order to get the highspeed I had to give up quality so like my animations wouldn't animate and the images were dropped in quality and if I went max it might not load all the images to help the pages speed up. To me this is not worth the trade off.

Earthlink is a major ISP in the US. I have been using it for a long time and I get a consistent T1 to T2 connection speed. They don't give popup ads like RR does or AOL on your startpage. I upgraded from dialup to cable without a hitch, then again, Dell is packaging Earthlink with new PC so there may be some differences in the packaging deal between Dell and Earthlink. Images loaded fine for me even back when I had dialup and still does quite well when I travel with my notebook and use dialup. There are more and more people going online everyday and the net does get crowded. I would check to see if you have the lastest Macromedia flash browser plugin from www. macromedia.com to help load your images a little better. Also, clear your web browser cache and check your speed from a speed test site like www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest. There are other test sites out there too.

Elspeth,
I have earthlink cable ISP for $41.95 and it is available through the local Time Warner Cable operator.
I've had it for a few years now. Before I had Road Runner. RR is ok, but it costs more than Earthlink. Check your cable operator and see if they offer other cable ISPs other than Road Runner. Shop around the local phone company where you live and see what they have in DSL. Whatever you pick, you can check your bandwidth speed by going to www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/. There are other sites like this where you can test your speed. Also go to Gibson Research at http://grc.com (not www.grc.com) and test how secure your system and connection is. Steve Gibson is a nationally recognized security expert. He recommends Zone Alarm firewall and he gives some explanation of firewalls.

Congratulations on your career change.  What will you be doing once you fininh school?  What is the degree in? When do you graduate?

Accouting has far more job stability and flexibility to perform different types of financial related positions than any IT career I know of. I'm still hoping for more software makers to realise the need for programmes that will work in linux without an emulator

Aon_Daonna
Yes, that is the bad side of Linux...a lot of m$ winders apps have not been ported/converted to Linux, then again there are m$ winders apps/programs that are not always needed in a UNIX/Linux environment. Most major LInux distros have all the basics, but I use Quicken 2004 and I am still tied to m$ winders. There is Gnucash (www.gnucash.org) that will import Quicken files nicely, but if you do online banking, most major banks in the USA only supports m$ winders, maybe mac but not gnucash...at least not yet. Some interesting news on Linux at eWeek.com...

Seawarrior.. I doubt that S2 & Aaed don't know about Linux..
I myself have been using Debian for years while still programming. But I gave it up and most programmes I use are alas MS based, so I rely on that and hope that either emulating software will get better one fine day or certain software companies bring out linux editions for the programmes I'm working with.

Oh...that's ok...just trying to help and maybe save some $$$. OpenOffice (www.openoffice.org)is available free for M$ Winders too. Debian? hmmm... I tried it earlier last year. I go lost somewhere during installaion...not the most user friendly distro for desktops...servers maybe yes or developer platform...not for the faint of heart.

And I could careless what MS thinks I paid for it and they got their money as far as I am concerned I will do with my purchase what I please. censored.gif

It's all about Corporate greed and I am sick and tired of it. Get poor programs that have to be constantly updated cause they screwed it up in programing and didn't secure it enough and then I have to pay an arm and a leg to get it. censored.gif

scottish2 and others frustrated with M$ Winders:

I am running an OS called Linux, which is a UNIX clone for desktop PCs and others. There are many "distributions" of Linux. I have used SuSE, Red Hat/Fedora, Mandrake, Gentoo. Go to www.distrowatch.com to look at them. Just do a search on linux and there are tons of sites for "newbies" and "lugs" which are Linux User Groups. I am using both Red Hat 9 and Fedora Core 1 which I use OpenOffice, and complete office suite for Linux, and Winders other OSs @ www.openoffice.org. My primary email client is Evolution @ www.ximian.com and Mozilla 1.5 web browser @ www.mozilla.org which has a built in popup ad blocker all for free. You can download ISO images to hard drive then burn to a CD-R/CD-RW to install free from Red Hat, Fedora, Mandrake, free FTP download from SuSE. A high speed connection is desirable. All of the above mentioned packages come with most distributions. Also, you can download AOL messenger and Yahoo messenger for Linux free also. I have "dual boot" environment, i.e. when the system is powered on, you chose your OS...Linux or M$ WInders. The only thing that keeps me tied to WInders is Quicken.
If you have a big enough hard drive or add a drive, you can install it. But the first thing to do before you can install it is you must create a linux partition on your hard drive, which is another story. Email me if interested and I can try and help.

CelticRose, if you already have Adware, you have to change/adjust the settings; if you have Adware 6.0,
start the program, click on Scan Now, select scan mode, choose default scanning options, click customize, and check drives and folders; scan archives. Then come down to Scan Memory and Registry; check scan active processes, scan registry, deep scan registry, scan hosts files, then a button at bottom right, "Proceed" Then "next" That should do it.

...I bet you have some real experiences to share.  Nice to have you with us and hope to see you posting and sharing amongst us...

Well, one of the most memorable experiences was a weekend tour to Rome during the week of Christmas. Our ship came to Naples (Napoli), Italy for about 2 weeks or so for Christmas. Well, Christmas day fell on a weekend, and there was a sponsored 2 day Christmas tour to Rome. There I saw many ancient Roman ruins, The Colosseum, St. Peter's Cathedral, St. Paul's Cathedral and the Sistine Chapel. I attended the midnight mass at St. Peter's and the place was packed with people from all over the world...and it went from midnight to about 3:30 am. The Sistine Chapel was especially interesting where Michelangelo paintings on the ceiling can be seen. Restoration work was in progress at the time and with all the tarps and scaffolding around it was hard to see some of his work. Go to www.christusrex.org and there are some links to the "Capella Sistina".
