if you are unfamiliar with GBS, then the Great Big DVD & CD is a MUST. while these guys sound great doing both traditional songs and self-penned songs, it's the live performance that shows you why they are so popular.

enjoy,
iceless

That's interesting, in most live preformances, the preformers sound worse than on a CD or the like!

I love Great Big Sea! They're so talented and very, VERY funny! Love their work a lot and am dying to get one of their CD's.

If you do not stand up and dance or get motivated by these boys you need to check your pulse because their is something wrong with you. I have seen these guys perform and the CD is nothing compared to what a live concert is like. Buy every CD these guys put out, they are incredible! Also check out their website as well.

I just heard some songs from GBS this morning and I like them!!! There was a couple of songs I've already heard before, I just didn't know it was them. I wishlisted their DVD & CD this morning!! A definite buy for sure!!! happy.gif

Their live recording of Mairidh Mhac (Mary Mack) is insane. The singer plays with the audience a little bit to kick it off, then the band gets the bit in its teeth and it is the wildest tempo you ever heard. You really would have to be devoid of pulse and blood pressure not to howl. Also -- though it's a little hard to track the words at that tempo -- it's a leetle naughtier version than typical. But funny. wink.gif

I purchased one of their CDs and it came with a live DVD of their concert. Not bad for about $17.99. Its probably available through amazon.com.

I have to say that not only was this a great value, but the concert is awesome. Defintely gets you rocking and they sound awesome live!

tongue.gif Yeppers...macfive and Rindy...I did get the dvd/cd combo and boy am I happy that I did! It is fun to see how they are in concert...who knows if I'll ever get to see the live myself so...it was fun to see how much they put into their show! Plus seeing the extras and interviews with them makes you feel like you know them! My youngest daughter was singing 'Donkey Riding' today...so also a hit with her!

I agree with Rindy too, can't wait to hear the new stuff...now that I am officially a GBS fan! Thanks for the recommendation you guys!!

Posted by: ArizonaAmy9 04-Nov-2005, 12:03 PM
biggrin.gif I just got an email from Curtis McCrary in charge of Management and Booking at The Rialto Theatre in Tucson, AZ and he can confirm for me that Great Big Sea will be there on February 16th and that tickets will be on sale Saturday, Nov. 19th at 10 am. Their box office will be open from 10-noon or you can purchase online (www.rialtotheatre.com) or by phone at (520) 740-1000. Just in case anyone else needed this info.... I've enjoyed some of GBS's music but I caught the live version of Boston and St. Johns and something about it just hooked me. Then it was General Taylor. Then When I'm Up, Consequence Free and now I'm on a Jack Hinks kick. I ended up buying their live CD with an eye toward adding more music as time and money permit.

AA, I'm jealous, you'll have to tell us how the concert goes.

Posted by: ArizonaAmy9 21-Nov-2005, 05:28 PM
talleyrand that is so funny...Boston to St. John's was the song that first caught my ear...then General Taylor. One day I had GT stuck in my head and could not think of who it was. After that...I took the advice of Macfive and Rindy and got their live cd/dvd and have loved them since!! So, this will be such a treat to have them here in Arizona! February will be a busy month for me...we have our Mesa Highland Games, our Ren Faire and then...a GBS concert!! You can BET I'll be reporting in!! tongue.gif

I just had a co-worker ask me about these guys. As much a fan of buying direct from the artist, that's what I recommended. However, she wants to know how trustworthy their ordering system is, and since it's not one I've used before I can't say first hand. Has anyone ordered a CD directly through greatbigsea.com, that can give better feedback on their system? I don't see any red flags, but I've not used it.

Posted by: ArizonaAmy9 22-Nov-2005, 01:32 PM
Ohhh...I am sorry I can't help Aaediwen as I did buy mine from amazon.com. I was going to buy it from Tower Records but I actually saved $5.00 going through amazon....good luck!

Posted by: Rindy 23-Nov-2005, 08:40 AM
Aaediwen,
I also got my GBS through Amazon.com.. You might go to their website and check it out a bit..

I do find myself listening to them a lot...Amy you are so lucky to get to see them...hope you get pictures...

I like most all of their stuff, but have to say my favorite is The Night Pat Murphy Died. I'm leaving instructions with my family that I want that as the prototype of my "services" when the time comes.

I had to get a pic to bring back when I walked by Paddy Murphy's pub on my visit to Ireland. That song always goes through my head when I think of it. It says they "Ain't been sober yet", and I'd say that's where they're staying drunk at smile.gif

Aaediwen I am glad you came back... thumbs_up.gif

I just got finished watching the new DVD that came with The Hard And The Easy.. I really enjoyed it..

I love the design of I think its LOTR on the Bodhran looks like a wizard also.. I really got a kick out of the cell phone call..on the dvd..

I love the River Driver...

This is well worth the money for the cd & dvd-

I had to come back. For the same reason I had to go visit. The homesickness I hear in trad is a large part of why I went. Even after the week there, I was starting to feel homesick for America. As beautiful as the country is, I could not move over there and stay. Just as Ireland was home for all those thousands of people over the last 300 years, America is home to me.

Posted by: Rindy 27-Dec-2005, 02:39 PM
I have more people say "play that again" The song is:

Come And I Will Sing You

very catchy tune...

I like that song too Rindy...my daughter and I can't wait to see them in concert in February! This will be her first concert and she is SO exicted...she loves to dance and sing...so the Great Big Sea concert perfectly combines the two!!

Well - what can I say about these guys except that THEY ARE GREAT IN CONCERT!!! They really, truly are! They did not have an opening band so they started their show right at 8pm. Played a great mix of old and new until bout 9:15. They took a wee break and were back on stage at 9:30. They played again til almost 10:30.

Got to hear General Taylor, Mari Mac, Donkey Riding, Come And I Will Sing You, The Night Paddy Murphy Died and many more...plus they played an 'unplugged' version of Consequence Free....which was excellent!

They did not play 2 of my favs...Boston to St. Johns and Clearest Indication but other wise...was a great show!

If you have one of their dvds...they are just like that...jumping, joking...having a great time - the whole time! SO, if you get a chance to see them...I say go! Could only have been better if they were sporting kilts instead of blue jeans!! wink.gif

Amy, my husband and I were at the Tucson GBS show, too, and it did rock! I've heard fans report that it was a more subdued crowd than at many of their shows, though. We had only seen them live once before, a couple of years ago in Seattle, and it seemed that way to us, too. The b'ys were great, as always, but, like most performers, I think, they do feed on a crowd's energy. I hope you get to see them again with a crowd of long-time fans all bouncing away in "vertical movement." What a hoot!

BTW, I posted some pics from the show http://photobucket.com/albums/a344/roisinmdubh/GBS_Tucson_06/, if you'd like to check them out. Feel free to copy any you like. We met before the show with some locals from the http://okp.greatbigsea.com, the official GBS message board. Now that you're a bona fide GBS fan, you might want to check that out, too. Nice bunch of folks there! The GBS site is a lot of fun, too, as someone (Sheilagh?) pointed out here. Be sure to look for the podcasts! They just posted a new one this week. Alas, since we now live in the broadbandless boonies, it takes me about 3 hours to download one to my player, but they're well-worth a listen.

There are quite a few GBS fans on LiveJournal, too, who get into some lively discussions via comments. There are several GBS fan communities.

Hey, I am new here and this is my first post.
I have been a fan of Great Big Sea since I was 16 and first heard Sea of No Cares.
I agree with everyone here, they do put on a great live show. \And the band members are amazing people with big hearts.

Welcome to Celtic Radio caliking_girl . I hope you enjoy the music as well as the forum. The people here are really nice. I am glad you like Great Big Sea. They are one of my favorites. Someday would like to see them in concert. Their DVD is really good. Also did you know Alan Doyle plays in a band with Russell Crowe (The Gladiator)

you can see and hear them here: http://www.myhandmyheart.com/

I heard that Great Big Sea have a new cd out. Has anyone heard it and if so do you like it.
I also understand they are doing a 12 days of Christmas auction and all proceeds will benifit the Janeway Childrens Hospital Foundation. You can see more here:

It's kind of a updated live concert CD/DVD combination of Rant and Roar, or their live CD/DVD, and the Hard and Easy. Good reviews over at amazon as always. My only complaint was that the CD has only 22 of the 24 tracks on the DVD. Danny Boy and Run Runaway (the song that originally hooked me on bagpipes) are not on the CD. And they are the ones I really wanted to be on the CD.

Posted by: Rindy 21-Dec-2006, 03:12 PM
Hello Roberto, I hate it when that happens. So is that a thumbs up on the new cd?

Slainte

Posted by: Roberto Phoenix 21-Dec-2006, 03:47 PM
I haven't picked up the CD yet but I probably will. GBS usually doesn't let me down and there was only one semi negative review and that was about the DVD not the Cd. Is run runaway on any other GBS CD? It's a two hour trip to the nearest CD store that stocks anything celtic. I checked down in the twin cities this last weekend but not one store caried anything I was looking for and GBS had not arrived yet. With Sam Goody out of business here it looks like online ordering is becoming my best way of shopping for anything.

Posted by: Rindy 21-Dec-2006, 04:10 PM
Hi Roberto, I didn't know you lived by the twin cities. I used to a long time ago. Still have family in Minneapolis. I like to shop with Amazon because its easy and fast. Well I think I will wait on mine then.. I do love this band..

Slainte

Posted by: Roberto Phoenix 28-Dec-2006, 05:28 PM
We lived in the twin cities for about three years before making the mistake of moving back to Ironwod cuz tuition was cheaper. We are hoping to move back when I finish school. I did however pick up the CD this weekend. It is a good CD but not as good as their last Great Big CD/DVD combo. One reviewer on Amazon says that Alan sounded abit tired (exhausted at some points) and I would have to agree with them. There is energy here but at a lower level. If you don't have Great Big DVD & CD you'll probably like this but if you already own the first than the second will be a little bit of a let down.
I have'nt seen the DVD portion of it yet but the disc also contains video of the concert as well as video for "When I am King", "Captain Kidd", "Shines Right through Me", and "Lukey" with the Chieftans which was already on youtube. I got it from Best Buy for 15 instead of the 20 from Barnes and Noble.

Ok I want ta cry... I just typed a entire page up and lost the darn thing. Anyhow Roberto,
I got a surprise in the mail today.

A very dear friend gave me some Campbells Gold Collection Shortbread cookies from Scotland and som tea called twinings Assam can only by it in Wales, a wonderful postcard of the National Wallace Monument, Abbey Craig, Stirling- bet your wondering where is she going with this one.

..well they also gave me GBS's Courage Patience & Grit In Concert and the DVD woo hoo... so far I love it.. Haven't had the time to watch the DVD but I will find it. I just really love these guys tunes..

One of my favorite songs is Mari Mac and I have never heard them do it once that I didn't like. These guys are my heros....reallly.....

Slainte If I could I'd slip ya one of these wonderful cookies..... smile.gif

Posted by: Roberto Phoenix 30-Dec-2006, 10:10 PM
It is a good CD and I stilll love their version of Meri Mac. Doesn't Gaelic Storm do a version of it? I know some high profile irish band does but I can't think of who right know. I'm able to get the Walker shortbread cookies up here once in blue moon from Copps. Otherwise its a trip to Hayward, WI or the Twin Cities. Have you checked Old World Market. They carry lots of goodies. Except for jelley babies. I get those at irish fest

Roberto-there's many bands that do Mairi Mac-but I have to say Great Big Sea is my all time favorite. I love Gaelic Storm too! I will check out Old World Market for the cookies thanks so much.

BEANEE- Welcome to Celtic Radio! I hope you enjoy the music as well as the wonderful people that are here on the forum. I will agree with you on the vocals of GBS they are fantastic!!!!! A wonderful band all around...

Slainte

Posted by: lawrence50 12-Mar-2008, 08:45 AM
Just on the website and they are quiet. A concert here and there in Canada and the States but with the summer festivals and touring season coming up fast I would hope they are on the road. I have seen them 4 times and hope to see them again.

Posted by: MacAibhistin 13-Mar-2008, 09:44 AM
They are a fun band to watch and their songs are very catchy. I've seen them 4 or 5 times now, but I think at the end of the day they are basically a pub style band. I don't mean that disrespectfully, but when you've seen a band of highly talented Celtic musicians, such as Altan, Dervish, or the Barra MacNeils, GBS ends up looking somewhat second rate. They are a very enjoyable group and I do appreciate their live shows.

Posted by: Rindy 15-Aug-2008, 10:54 AM
I was wondering if anyone has seen them live at all this summer? And if so how was it? As I've said before I think this band is one of the best. thumbs_up.gif

Sean McCann just announced he is leaving the band at the end of their 20th Anniversary Tour in January.

Sean:
"This will be my last tour with GBS...
and I fully intend to enjoy every &$#*! second and leave the stage with nothing but LOVE in my heart.
So come on out to say goodbye....and save the Last Dance for Me."

Not sure if the Band will continues but I am going to the Fall River, MA show next week and it should be one to remember.
