QUOTE (CelticRose @ 14-Feb-2007, 08:30 PM) | This weekend they will have piper, E.J. of The Rogues, performing with them. Man! It is killing me! I sooooooooooooooooo want to go and if I can I will as I so love The Rogues, too!
|
Yup, The Boy was there this past weekend. (The Rogues had a big gig playing with the U.S. Air Force Band the weekend before, so he couldn't be in Arizona.) You guys take good care of him, you hear? |

For those of you who have missed Clandestine, and for those who never got to see them, there's great news!
http://www.clandestineceltic.com/
There's a bit of a change in lineup; they exchanged the cute little blonde with the guitar for a swarthy NASA astrophysicist with various stringed instruments, but you know what? It works!
EJ and Emily and Gregory have teamed up with Al Cofrin of Istanpitta, and they're playing, once again, as Clandestine. They played their first gig under that name (although they've been playing together under various other monikers for a while now) last month at Clandestine's old home bar, the Mucky Duck in Houston. They were very, very well-received and everyone is stoked.
Just thought I'd pass along the news. Happy Holidays, everybody! |

*g* I thought that was you; the tipoff was when I saw in your profile that you were from Arizona.
(Psst. There might possibly be a Rogue in your neck of the woods for a bit next winter. Not all of 'em, but one. I, personally, am gearing up for a February visit. But you didn't hear it from me.)
I am very impressed with your boys. I had heard about the Tinkers forever, but this was my first time getting to see them live. They ROCKED. I had a great time! Now I want 'em to come back! Was discussing it on the Texas Scottish Festival list, and heard that they'd been trying to get the Tinkers to come back to TSF, but there'd been schedule conflicts. Argh. But the reaction on the list was enthusiastic and positive, so maybe someday. |

Hi everybody! I'm here in beautiful downtown Bedford, halfway through the Bedford Celtic Heritage Festival. It's a little festival with a lot of Texas Celtic music. Yesterday I saw Needfire, Paisley Close, BEHAN, Seamus Stout, Michael Harrison and Linda King, and the ever-present North Texas Caledonian Pipes and Drums. (Needfire was one of the last acts of the day, and I went almost all. day. without hearing any pipes, until the pipe band, um, piped up. Heh.)
Today I want to catch Tullamore (old friends from the Norman, OK Medieval Fair) and Spriggan and the Trinity River Whalers, assuming we don't get rained out. It was supposed to rain last night and all day today, and it hasn't started yet, so I'm holding my breath. Just a few more hours; is that too much to ask?
Also, yesterday I spoke with a fellow from SCMATX -- I stopped by their tent to ask if it was true that the Glengarry Bhoys are going to be at NTIF this year, and he was cagey, but he said, "Would that be a good thing?" And I said yes!!! -- and he said that they'd had almost fifty bands apply to appear at NTIF next year, but they've only got slots for 26 or so, so they're having the difficult and admirable task of deciding who's going to come. They're trying to balance it out between new acts (yay, new acts! I always like to see bands I've never seen before) and the old favorites, inasmuch as this will be NTIF's 25th year, and they want to celebrate with the bands that have been there for them all along, which I heartily agree with, too. So I'm glad the choices are *theirs* to make and not mine. Hell, I'm trying to be everywhere at once *this* weekend!
Been taking lots of pictures. More soon. Sláinte, y'all!! |

Oops! Okay, I read the subject line and didn't read the first post carefully enough. *Live* CDs, huh?
Hmm. Okay, I have the Rogues' live CD, "Made in Texas".
And I have the Wicked Tinkers' live CD, "Banger for Breakfast".
They both rock. |

Um. Quick, off the top of my head, from the office (shh... don't tell), without my collection to hand to look at...
The Rogues Clandestine Jiggernaut EJ Jones Alasdair Fraser Brian MacNeill Gordon Duncan Needfire Tinsmith Enter the Haggis Brother Wicked Tinkers Glengarry Bhoys The Firestarters
Heh, and one lone Loreena McKennitt CD, which, except for the Gordon Duncan (God rest his soul), is the only one of those that I didn't buy from a table at the back of the bar/tent/auditorium/whatever, after catching the act. |

Re: Photography -- You majored in it? That's so cool. I am completely self-taught, and I'm working hard these days to fill in the gaps in my knowledge.
There was a woman who came to a local art museum here last winter, to give a lecture about a book of her photographs that had just been published (many of the photos were being exhibited at the museum at the time). For 35 years, she specialized in pictures of writers -- novelists, playwrights, journalists -- and she did practically all of it with her trusty, 40 year-old Leica and available light. No studio, no pile of equipment, no assistants. Many, many of the pictures were familiar from book jackets and magazine articles. I was so blown away -- that's what I want to do! -- and so I hung around the reception until the crowd was gone, and we talked for a while. I told her that I was specializing in photographing Celtic musicians, and the first thing she said was, "Where do you find them?" Hee. If she only knew. But then we talked about *documenting* what's going on in the community, having it there, to be able to see who the people were and what they were doing. It was very inspiring, and she was very kind. I came away all motivated.
Re: Rogues -- my boys! I love 'em. I'm their webmaster, and I took the pictures for the Roguetrip CD. I'm gearing up to head out to NC with 'em next month.
But first? Bedford |

Thanks! Yes, I have a digital SLR, a Nikon D200. For me, the number one trick to getting the shots without getting burned by a camera delay is I turn off the autofocus and do it by hand; after 20 years of film photography with an SLR that predated autofocus, I've found that I'm a lot faster and a lot more accurate than the autofocus, especially under the iffy lighting conditions you find with a lot of stage shows.
I started learning concert photography skills whilst I was following the Rogues around, and from there I've branched out a bit. I honestly think it's one of the most challenging kinds of photography there is -- subjects constantly moving around out of your control, odd and uneven lighting conditions, stages cluttered with equipment that always seems to be right in the middle of the Perfect Shot (how many times has someone moved behind a mike stand on me at the exact wrong moment?).
::snickers at silly self:: What's not to love? |

Alas, I am obviously too late for the July performance, but if you didn't go, and you ever get another chance... GO. I saw them this past weekend at the Oklahoma Scottish Games, and they ROCKED! I had a great, great time. |

Actually, you know, I used a 50mm lens for the entire weekend. No telephoto at all. I needed the speed (my 50mm is an f1.4).
I was usually up front for everything, and I also tend to move around a lot -- this side of the stage, that side of the stage... sometimes from *behind* the stage.
Thanks for the kind words. I had a great time that weekend, and I really enjoyed taking the pictures. |

QUOTE | i was wondering if they were in anyway related to the the clandestine you spoke of... |
I don't think so, but couldn't say for sure. Clandestine was a Celtic band out of Houston; they were a four piece -- EJ Jones on pipes and flute, Gregory McQueen on fiddle, Emily Dugas on percussion and vocals, and Jen Hamill on guitar and vocals. They never really played the renfaires; they were more in the way of Celtic festivals and Highland Games and bars. They also played Lillith Fair, and the Kennedy Center, and the Festival Interceltique de Lorient in Brittany. They toured for about 8 years before they split up. QUOTE | mucky ducky is in the chicago area? |
Nope, it's in Houston, the Mucky Duck Pub. The Rogues played the U. of Chicago's Folk Festival last month, though, and OMG, we had such a good, good time! (I'm not in the band; I'm just their nudz friend. *g*) It was the most fun we've had in ages; I can't wait to go back. |

Ah, and verily, I do. I've got pictures from the North Texas Irish Festival (first weekend in March), the University of Chicago Folk Festival (mid-February, yes, I went to Chicago in February on purpose!), a MacHenry's-Mucky Duck Endurance Run weekend (mid-January) and the Dickens on the Strand festival (early December) all in the queue. Celtic music is a way of life. ::nods sagely:: |

So another St. Pat's has come and gone, and we had a great time at the Mucky Duck down in Houston. Headline bands were The Rogues, The Remnants (including EJ Jones, Emily Dugas and Gregory McQueen, all late of Clandestine), and Poor Man's Fortune. The evening was warm (St. Pat's should *always* be on a Friday!) and the crowd was large and enthusiastic. And I managed to *not* spill mead on my camera, so go me!
I posted a bunch of pictures at http://www.vickita.org/else/gallery/stpat2006/.
Enjoy! |

QUOTE (ArizonaAmy9 @ 29-Jul-2005, 07:54 PM) | vickita...your pics are great! Love these guys and would love to see them live...guess I'll have to make a trip to Texas some day as I don't think they'll be heading to Arizona any time soon! Thanks for sharing your pics!
amy |
Ah, thank you! Alas, no, the boys probably won't be going to Arizona in the immediate future. It's more a problem of logistics than anything else; Nelson teaches school up by Toronto during the week, and it's all he can do to travel to Houston and back for a weekend. Any further away than that, and it would become *really* difficult. (Speaking as one who has picked him up at DFW and ferried him to Fort Worth for a Friday night gig at MacHenry's, I can tell you that it's quite a challenge to get the boy there in time!) And when school's out, well, it's summer, and... *g*
If they ever do play in Arizona, you can be sure that you'll see me there. I love Arizona.

QUOTE (Celtic cat @ 19-Jul-2005, 12:29 PM) | Hi Vickita, where in Texas was this festival and will they be there again? |
It's held every year in June at Maverick Stadium in Arlington. I'm sure that the Rogues and Jiggernaut will be there again, as will most of the other performers I took pictures of. TSF is a rocking good festival from a musical standpoint, although it can be a little on the *cough* warm side. *g* TSF website: http://www.texasscottishfestival.com/There's also an Irish festival in Dallas in March. The word just came down that Brother will be the headliners there next year, and most likely the Rogues and Jiggernaut will be *there* too. North Texas Irish Festival: http://www.ntif.org/I highly recommend both of these events. We have a great time! -- Visit The Rogues Online"It gives them chills. It's the kind of music that raises the hackles on the back of their necks." -- EJ Jones |

Hey, thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures! We did have a really great time.
I *wish* the Rogues would play in Arizona; I *love* Arizona! It's beautiful. I'd happily get on a plane (or make a road trip of it) to go to see them there. |
