Colonel Anne MacKintosh

I started this new topic for Patch about Colonel Anne MacKintosh.
This is his knowledge of her involvement at Culloden.

I did a bit a research on Colonel Anne and actually she was married to a Scots who fought for the English his name was Angus MacKintosh and he was chief of Clan MacKintosh. And she did not really hold a military rank because when her husband was arrested by Prince Charlie he was put into her custody and she greeted him by his rank "your servant captain and he answer likewise "your servant colonel".

Thank you. I will pick it up. All I had found on the net was a two paragraph account at 8 or so deferent sites. I know because of her husbands position with the English at the time, she retained her life. Many of the other Clansmen didn't. My ancestors were in that battle. Some died in battle or were executed later. I came about because some made a hasty migration to France.

My grandfather had an old portrait of an aged Scot with a Tartan "wrapped kilt", seated on a stool(?) with an upright Claymore. I am told all of the "posing" means something.

First though, I doubt any of my ancestors was wealthy enough to have a portrait painted. Thus it must have been someone important to my ancestors.

By the time It came to me there was no one left to ask about its origins.

If I may,a minor correction. The "Black Watch" was on the Continent at the time of Culloden fighting in the War of the Austrian Susession. In 1745 they took part in the Battle of Fontenoy in Holland which was a British defeat. The next time the Watch was in battle was at Ticonderoga. Here again a British defeat.

It was my understanding that Col. Anne's husband was serving on English soil when she (in his absence) relayed the Clans However he was not involved in the battle. Probably the best information I got was from the Clan MacKintosh and it was limited.

PS. By the way at this point in its' history The Black Watch was a Campbell regiment.

I believe the Campbells and The MacKintoshes had ties at that time and at some point later Clan Mackintosh became the stronger of the two and thus provided the Clan Chief. (This from Clan MacKintosh again.)

Most of my really old geneology came from Clan MacKintosh.

Camac is correct about more info on Colonel Anne on the web site Electric Scotland. And this where I found the bits of info about her for you.This web site provides a lot of history information about the Clans of Scotland and also about their septs.

I've been receiving their newletters now for some years and find it always interesting. Check it out it might worth it.

My friend again if you log on to Electric Scotland you will find some good info on the MacKintosh also if you can get a hold The Highlanders by Skene a very informative work. From what little I can recollect with out reading more about the only ties the Campbells had with the MacKintosh would be they were both loyal to the English crown at the time of Culloden. If you like I will delve into your family more if you wish.

I am fortunate to have a book store that has been able to get unusual and out of publication books for me. I will check out the web site and would appreciate any further information you can provide.

My family went from Scotland to France to America in a short time frame. My aunt took the geneology to France but not Scotland. I did that and the Clan helped. A family I correspond with in Northern Scotland helps verify things from time to time. I am far from being certain of all the relationships yet.

Ritchie is definately connected to MacKintosh which in turn comes from MacDuff, Earl of Fife. I will try and get more info for you over the next few days. As you spring from MacDuff I will see what connection there is to the MacDuff in (That Scottish Play) MacBeth.

Electric Scotland "print" is quite small. I have been taking a small portion , placing it in E-mail and sending it ti myself. I can get it large enough to read that way. There is a wealth of Information there. I think Monday I will go to the book store.

As I recall, I saw it somewhere offered for sale. I think it may still be easily obtainable. The book store I usually buy from has been able to find things that I didn't think they would. (small print runs, out of print and limited interest).
