John Barleycorn was a name given to barley which was the main grain in Europe/GB..... Hence the life of the fields.....

The person who introduced me to this song wasn't much for the Celtic traditions, but hears about them from myself and his SO. He liked it because he thought they really tortured the poor fellow. LOL
I think it bummed him out a bit when told him what was really going on.
