Wondering if anyone would know where I can find recordings of music written in Europe between about 1000 and 1500 AD? I'd love to hear some ancient Celtic music, but I'll settle for anything from Europe, really. Or what the oldest known music is from that area? I'm guessing it would be some chanted hymns from some monestary, but I don't really know.

Thanks,

Heather

The older music I could find was some Greek music called Epitaphe de Sikelos (between -300 and -100 BC) so it's much older than gregorian chant ! This is funeral music and it was carved on a stela. You can hear it (and others very interesting) here : http://www.angelicvoice.net/~musique/extraits.htm
Sorry it's in French but just find Europe and click on Epitaphe de Sikelos to hear the music wink.gif

Well, sorry I didn't read all before writing my previous post...there is an older music on this site... laugh.gif laugh.gif . It's the older greek music ever found (5 centuries BC), it's from the first choir of the Oreste tragedy from Euripide. It's beautiful, I didn't know it, so I have to thank you for the discovery HeatherMarie wink.gif

Oh, that is beautiful! I especially like the one called "Chanson de Mai." Thanks for the link! My mono-linguistic self can't seem to find the song you mentioned in the second post, though, can you tell me which link to click on to get to that one?

Thanks again,

Heather

Let me do some digging around...it's been awhile since I went medieval music shopping. Off the top of my head, try Mediaeval Baebes. Much of their music is from the medieval/Renaissance period. I had to sing some of that to my girls as lullabyes once upon a time. Middle English is a pain! laugh.gif

It's the third song on the Europe part. Just click on "Le 1er choeur de la tragédie "Oreste" d'Euripide". smile.gif

My favourite is the "Llibre Vermell", spanish songs from the 12th century. I have the CD, it's beautiful wink.gif
