| One problem new Gaelic learners have is trying to make Accented vowels with their current keyboards! I'm going to try to show you how to set up your keyboard for making them! I will show you two methods, the first will change your keyboard so that you can make accented vowels out right. The second will make one accented vowel at a time. Here are the methods: Method One: Change the keyboard setting out right. To do this, do the following things: Click on: Start Settings Control Panel Keyboard Languages Properties Then use the down arrow to find United States (International). Click on it and be sure to save the change! If this worked you should be able to type accented vowels by first typing the forward quote symbol (' located on the same key with the double quote) or backward quote symbol (` located in the upper left corner on the same key with the Spanish tilde ~) and then following it IMMEDIATELY with a vowel (a, e, i, o, or u and the capital versions of each). You should get àèìòù ÁÉÍÓÚ. If this did not work for you, then you'll have to make them one at a time as needed. To do this, here is Method Two: One accented letter at a time. Click on: Start Programs Accessories System Tools Character Map When you click on this, you'll get a chart showing many different foreign letters. If you click on one, a Keystroke combinataion will appear in the lower right corner of that window. It should look something like Alt + 0192. Type that combination in. To do this, hold down the Alt key. While holding it in, punch in the number combination. If you try it with the combination I gave above, you should get À. Let me know how it goes! |

| Basically what I've done is make a list and stuck it on my monitor... I use the character map option. For this make sure your num lock is on. You hold down the alt key and then type in the character's assigned number. like this: Á= alt + 0193 É= alt + 0201 Í= alt + 0205 Ó= alt + 0211 Ú= alt +0218 á= alt +0225 é= alt +0233 í= alt + 0237 ó= alt + 0243 ú= alt + 0250 |

| the num lock button will be somewhere around the number keys. There's going to be a caps lock (makes all letters capitol), the num lock will most likely be around there. The alt + the numbers works for me thank! |

| Oh, Dear! It doesn't shows like in the Word doc from where I did copy and paste... Well... The columns have been just shifted to the left for some reason, but if you put the numbers under "ANSI Code" and the symbol under "Character" you will get there. The number lock is a key with "Num Lock" on it and most often than not is over the number 7 on the right of the keyboard. Pressing that key the green lead "Num Lock" will be alight. |

| For Scottish Gàidhlig the grave vowels are done with Alt and the following numbers: À = alt 0192 È = alt 0200 Ì = alt 0204 Ò = alt 0210 Ù = alt 0217 à = alt 133 è = alt 138 ì = alt 141 ò = alt 149 ù = alt 151  |

There might not be any numlock on a laptop;  it's part of the keypad at the right on a standard keyboard. |

| I have yet to find a way to do it on a laptop keyboard. I use the abcTajpu extention for Firefox and Thunderbird. It puts all the characters in a context menu. I keep it configured for German, Spanish, and Gaelic, but there are about 50 more to choose from as well. |

| For all who cannot find the language settings because it's not there, and all whose lap top won't do ALT... (like mine) go to http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/~oduibhin/mearchlar/windows.htm and follow the instructions as shown for US Ireland extended (or UK extended) to download the necessary driver for the keybpard. http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/~oduibhin/mearchlar/gaelicus.htm chances are high that it works. |

There should be a chart online somewhere. I think it works similar to the Compose key under Solaris, where you hold the command key and type say A` |

| guess i'm lucky because on my keyboard i can switch from english to french and alot of the french keys work as gaelic, could that help you??in word, it's alt shift |
