The Gaels are the peoples who speak the Gaelic languages or did so in the past. Gaelic was in danger of being exterminated in many of the traditional Gaelic speaking areas, but now a Gaelic renaissance has slowed this trend if not yet reversed it. There are many different variations of Gaelic, such as Irish Gaelic, Manx Gaelic and Scottish Gaelic to name a few.

In support of the Gaelic langauge forums run by WizardofOwls, we have introduced a Gaelic Symbol help card that can easily insert the unqiue Gaelic letters into your post. Below the smilie box on the post screen are three links:

Length · BB Code · Gaelic

Click on Gaelic and a pop-up box will display the Gaelic Symbols. Just click on the symbol you need and it will be insert into your post.

We have also added a daily Gaelic Proverb at the top of our community forums. Each day a new Gaelic Proverb will be displayed.

Any other ideas or ways we can support Gaelic on Celtic Radio please let us know!

I love the Gaelic Proverbs. But please, please add a note about what language the proverb comes from. I am learning Irish but cant really diferentiate among the different Gaelic languages yet.

Thanks,

Lynch

I am glad these two new features are useful!

These are the types of things I love to work on that can be wrapped up in an afternoon.

The Gaelic Proverbs are from Scots Gaelic I believe. Actually, they go back to the days of the "Scottish Highlander" and we use to display them on that site back in 2000. I have 60 days worth of proverbs and will certainly add more - almost a whole years worth.

Right now I will need to rotate new proverbs in every 60 days and they are stored in some javascript routines, but I would like to get this in a database so that it is easier to display anywhere on the site. rolleyes.gif

I think the gaelic sayings are a fantastic part of visiting the site! Thanks for including them. Now, if only I could figure out the pronunciation I'd well on my road! biggrin.gif

Aye, a phonetic translation would be very helpful. I still look at some of the words and go "huh?" I've studied and can read both both ancient Greek and Hebrew but sometimes this language does give me a headache as far as the combinations of letters and their sounds being two totally different things.

I like the proverbs too, but the pronouncing them is the hardest. I am still looking for something to help w/ the scots gaelic like some sort of audio teaching thing.

biggrin.gif Thank you so much for the link Rindy!

I haven't found the section where they teach you to say thanks in Gaelic but I will try and learn Beag air Bheag rolleyes.gif and become more conversant.

I bought a CD on speaking Irish, but that confused the heck out of me. unsure.gif Not that I've given up trying, mind you!
