I'm a big fan of U2. I discover this song a year ago and it really touched me.  I thought I could share the lyrics with you. The wild irish rose is not only a girl, it's an image of Ireland itself too.But when you listen to the song, you can hear Bono explain the song is coming from. I recommend it!

There you go:

In a field by a river
my lover and I did lie.
On my naked shoulder
she's too proud to cry
She said that I must leave her
An icy tear she froze.
How could I melt the heart
of a wild Irish rose

Well, a gypsy she has made of me
a servant of the streets
From bed to bed I've travelled to taste a love as sweet.
Well the heart it knows no reasons
no reason and no laws
As I lie awake and think of
a wild Irish Rose.

[3rd verse - unintelligible due to narrator voice over]

Well I saw the city of angels
it brought the devil out of me.
In ####'s hotel on Sunset
showed a whore no mercy.
As the orange sky was screaming
from the roof I let her go.
In the dizzy heights that brought me
my wild Irish rose.

Now, wild is the rose
that she laid on my grave.
A life was all she wanted
and a life I surely gave
Like a hundred men before me
they lay lying here in rows.
Young men, bloody
as a wild Irish rose.

Mel,  That was a beautiful song and yes,  I can understand why it would be about Ireland too.  The second verse says to me, that once a person has been and seen Ireland, they just wouldn't be able to stay away! No matter where you would go, that desire for the land and it's people would always be there.
Anyone else have an opinion?
Thanks Mel and I liked the green you used, since Ireland is called the Emerald Isle!

So true what you say about Ireland Maggie.  I love the song also.
