Well, according to the Marquis Scotland will always have a Socialist government. I think that the backlash against hereditary titles is really a backlash against the British. It is sad because your right, the whole reason people of Scotish decent take pride in it is the clan system. It gives us a chance to be both unique, yet at the same time part of a group. Also, the subsistance farmers are supported in a large part by the titled land owners. When those owners are no more the farmers will have to look the government for assistance. That will put a burden on the whole country. |

Recently I got the chance to talk to the Marquis of Huntly at the Williamsburg Scottish Games. He was the honored guest for the Games. After the Games, there was a banquet for the Marquis and the honored clan, Gordon. The Marquis gave a very interesting speech on the state of Scottish politics today. According to the Marquis, the practice of hereditary titles is in jepardy. Though Scotland is free, most of her population resides in the lower basin. Currently Scotland has a Socialist government that wants to do away with hereditary titles and land ownership. Gone would be the Clan chiefs and really, the whole clan system. The Marquis was very happy to see the support his tittle and the Clan system recieves in America but he was not sure how much longer his way of life could last. The Clan chiefs, and other hereditary leaders are willing to work with the government but refuse to just give up their title, job, and land without reinbursment. I think it would be a sad thing to loose that which has served Scotland for centuries. I am looking for ideas on how to get the word out to others and maybe even help with the political battle. |

I did not meet anybody at the MD Renn Fair. However, my group, the Rouges and Wenches, will be giving demenstrations at the Williamsburg games, Sept 28-29. I will probably be the only "wench" there. You can find me either were the Rouges are preforming or at the Clan Gordon tent. |

Yes that was us at the Beckley Games. I, however was not there but Jerry, our converner, was. We will be at the MD Renn Fair for Scottish Weekend on Sept. 14-15. |

I travel with the Virgina Convener for the Gordon clan and at the last two Games we attended we won awards. At the Alexandria Scottish Games we won Best Clan Presentaion and at the West Virginia Games we won the People's Choice award. While representing the Gordon clan (I'm actually a Crawford) the convener also is the leader of a fight troupe, the Rouges and Wenches. (That's where I come in) We demonstrate the uses of traditional Scottish weapons, as well as their historical signifigance. We also actually kilt a volunteer using a great kilt. The next Games we will be attending are the Williamsburg Highland Games. |
