There are many movies coming out all the time and some we have never seen until recently. Thought we could share what we have seen recently and give a critique of what we thought and if we would recommend the film. smile.gif

The last movie I saw was...*thinking*...High Fiedlity. It is a great movie. The top 5 lists are something I do a lot, and the characters remind me of my friends. The ycan be real music snobs.

Oh, John Cusak is a real hottie, which makes it even beter, and you can see Catheroine Zeta-Jones before she was Catherine Zeta-Jones

Last movies I saw were <I>Hulk</I>, <I>The Core</I>, <I>2 Fast 2 furious</I>, and <I>Blasing Saddles</I>.

<I><B><U>Hulk</U></B></U>
Ok I guess. wasn't really all that impressed. Not enough action and suspense for a movie with such a character in it

<I><B><U>The Core</U></B></U>
Good movie, good story. LOADS of room for improvement. Rat wouldn't last two seconds, might have deleted three files when they found him and messed up a couple others. nothing that wouldn't be quickly recovered.
And how does the Golden Gate melt while there are still people screaming in the cars?
And then there are a bunch of other things. But as a movie, it's pretty good.

<I><B><U>2 Fast 2 Furious</U></B></U>
Not as much action as in the first movie, but also not as much room for technical inaccuracies. They don't dwell as much on technicalities, and focus more on the story, which is good. this and <I>The Fast and the Furious</I> Each have things over the other one. The second DVD's extras were pretty cool though. Major improvment over the first one, which quite frankly, you'd probably be better off getting VHS. The menus and extras sucked on that one. Definately worth checking out here though.

<I><B><U>Blasing Saddles</U></B></U>
Ok, I like Mel Brooks, but this could have been better. <I>Spaceballs</I> it certainly ain't! It has it's moments, and I'm not going to run from it. but I doubt I'll be in any hurry to see it again either

Hey! Last night I saw an old movie in which I really love. "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" with Bette Midler and Nick Nolte. I know it is an old one, but always so hilarious everytime I see it. laugh.gif

I have an all time favorite comedy movie that is very difficult to find and is only availble on VHS it stars Tom Behringer, Andy Griffeth, Patrick Wayne and a bunch of other people that you would recognize. It's a spoof on old western movies and if you even remotely enjoyed Blazing Saddles this is a must see.

Rustler's Rhapsody - I accidently taped it off of HBO a number of years ago when I mean't to get something else and it was one of the best mistakes that I ever made.

I recently saw "The Ring" and I thought it was worth the watch, decent plot good acting and some suprises ( I don't want to give to much away)

I will probably be watching the Gangs of New York in the Near so I will give my review of that.

What are some opinions on LOTR I'm sure 99% of the people posting here have seen it?

I personally thought that it was very well done in every regard and I have avoided re-reading the entire series until I have seen the last episode so that I don't ruin the movie for myself.

My sister(the big shot Hollywood producer) hated it but I think she just didn't like or relate to the story on any level.

My sales manager didn't like the cinematography as he was looking for something more fanciful kind of like "Legend"

It has been 30 years since I read the books and I think that made it much better for me. I am not much on re-reading anything as it sort of spoils the story for me but I think I will re-read this one after I have seen the final movie.

I'm also not much on watching a movie more than once but I have watched "Rustler's Rhapsody" probably 10 times and I now own 2 store bought copies as the original disappeared some time back.

I saw "The Core" and it was a disappointment to me on every level and I totally love that kind of story.

I actually had planned to see the Hulk but now I'm not so sure after reading your comments Aaediwen. Perhaps I'll go see the latest Matrix instead.

Did any one else see the Matrix reloaded and think that the whole Cavern/sex scene was way overdone and pointless???

The last three movies I've seen are "The Italian Job", "The Hulk" and "The Matrix Revolutions".

"The Italian Job":

The version I saw was the recent one with Mark ("Marky Mark") Wahlberg, Charlize Theron naughty.gif , Edward Norton, Donald Sutherland and Seth Green. The real star of the movie though was the Mini Cooper. These thieves steal a safeload of gold, but one of them double-crosses his partners.

"The Hulk":

I rented this on DVD. I had always meant to see it in the theaters. The movie was good, and I didn't mind looking at Jennifer Connelly naughty.gif . You can tell Marvel Comics is getting close to the bottom of the barrel, though. When I went to the movies last night (see below), I saw they're scraping the bottom now; next summer, they're coming out with "The Punisher", which has already been made into a bad movie about ten years ago with Dolph Lundgren (Drago from "Rocky IV") and Louis Gossett Jr.

"The Matrix Revolutions":

Awesome movie. The only mistake I made was paying $9.00 for a regular adult ticket to see it last night. Thank goodness I stopped at a convenience store along the way and bought a bag of peanut butter M&Ms and a Pepsi otherwise that would've set me back another $6-$7. I knew Keanu Reeves' character was going to die, I just didn't know how. That's the part that sucks about being a martyr-you have to die.

Let me add something related to Aaediwen's thoughts on "The Fast & The Furious" movies. I think that when Paul Walker was a kid, he tried an experiment by injecting some tree DNA into himself and it went straight to his acting ability.

Posted by: Richard Bercot 16-Nov-2003, 03:18 PM
The last two Movies is saw was;

Fellowship of the Ring" I had seen it before but sine I had just finished the book, I wanted to see it again. Even though it was a good Movie, I was very dissapointed in it. I guess the book spoiled me.

"Little Big Man" with Dustin Hoffman, Chief Dan George and Faye Dunaway. Very funny Movie. thumbs_up.gif

I really liked the dog!

I have been considering watching Legally Blonde 2, I know the first one ranged from cute to funny. The 'Reckless Abandonment' bit had me ROTFLMAO. We rented some more movies yesterday, planning to watch "Bulletproof Monk" here shortly

......oh, that is an oldy but a goody Maggie!! wink.gif

We went and saw 'Kill Bill' last week.....it was, well......different! I didn't know that the movie was split into two parts. By the time the last fight scene came and went on, and on and on....I was getting suspicious. The special effects were very good!

Can't wait for 'Return of the King'!! rolleyes.gif biggrin.gif

Posted by: CelticRose 17-Nov-2003, 02:22 PM
I saw "Ransom" with Mel Gibson last night! That was very good and of course, being a woman, I love Mel!

I own both LOTR movies and love them and watch them all the time. I have never read the books, have them, but waiting for ROTK to come out first and then will probably read them. Don't want anything to spoil it for me when I see the final and hopefully the best of the series! Long Live King Aragorn! thumbs_up.gif

~sighs happily with a smile on her face~
....ahhhhhh, yes,......Mel, he is wonderful. biggrin.gif

Though, I must admit Viggo Mortensen is right up there too!
In agreement, 'Long Live King Aragorn!!'
I'm hoping LOTR gets the Academy Awards it so deserves this time 'round.

I've gone to the pictures a couple of times recently.
SEABISCUIT was excellent. The story was very interesting- all the more so since it was true. The cinematography is beautiful too.Well worth watching.

LOVE ACTUALLY I saw last night. This is very much a Brit pack film with lots of well known actors (Liam Neeson and Colin Firth to mention but two hunks drool.gif ). It is a real chick flick with lots of ahhh moments and lots of laughs. It is a real feel-good movie and would be great to watch around Christmas.

Paula,
Orlando Bloom is the boy for me too.I use his picture from LOTR as a screensaver.Oops! bib needed for the drool. rolleyes.gif

Dont think I have actually posted on here before, its been so long since I visited. I upgraged to Broadband and havent been able to get in until tonight!

Anyhooo, I went to see Mystic River at the weekend and I really enjoyed it. Not an overly complicated plot, as some have you following twists and turns until you feel sea sick, but it was well acted - Sean Penn was brilliant! Not a MAJOR fan of his, but he was GOOOD.

It was getting a bit predictable towards the end, but still held your interest to see what would happen to the various people involved.

My boyfriend "liked" it (I said that since C Eastwood was behind the camera and not in front it didnt stand much chance with him!) but wasnt overly enthusiastic about it, ah well!! biggrin.gif

Posted by: CelticAingeal 17-Nov-2003, 03:27 PM
Hi Maidsmum and Welcome!! bye1.gif

I have seen the comercial for Mystic River and wondered about it. Will definately have to go see it now. Thanks for sharing!

I have to agree, eventhough Aragorn rules...woo hoo!!.... Orlando is a sweety biggrin.gif I love the relationship Legolas and Gimli form throughout the Trilogy.

I just got done watching "Finding Nemo".

That was a good and funny movie.

Posted by: CelticRose 23-Nov-2003, 01:29 AM
Anybody remember the movie with Mike Myers, "I Married an Axe Murderer?" Well, I just watched it again. Love that movie!

Posted by: single speed 23-Nov-2003, 08:24 AM

I'm more of a renter than a go to the movies type. That said, rent A Mighty Wind. It's a mockumentary of folk music, in the vein of This is Spinal Tap. It was produced by Christopher Guest (a hero to geeks everywhere), and has the same Spinal Tap cast. Besides being a hilarious movie, the music is fantastic! Get both movies and make it a double feature.

The Italian Job was a wonderful suprize, It was much better that I expected. I would love to see the original (made in 1966 or 67) again.

I haven't seen "So I Married an Axe Murderer" or "This is Spinal Tap" in quite a while but both are hilarious. Going to have to get them soon.

Just watched "Ronin" on Friday and in the next couple of days I'm going to watch one of the my favourite mob movies (irish mob), "State of Grace".

Posted by: CelticRose 23-Nov-2003, 05:27 PM
I have the movie, Ronin! Very good movie! I love anything that Robert De Niro does anyway.

I also happen to like mob movies! cool.gif My favorite being The Godfather series. I am half Italian. I guess that is where it comes from! angel_not.gif laugh.gif

Last night I watched a movie called "Incognito" about an artist who makes his living forging Old Master's artwork. He wants to get out of it and do his own thing, but accepts one more job, a Rembrandt! Being an artist myself and Rembrandt being my very favorite old master, I was enthralled with this movie. It was real neat to see the artist at work and all the angst that can go with producing a piece. The soundtrack was spectacular. very moving and very inspiring. I had my bum back in the studio working today! The sad thing about this movie is that it never made it to the theatres. I just happened upon it at the video store as it was for sale and I knew it was my kind of movie so I bought it! Glad I did.

This weekend since I hit my right foot on a chair, and I've had it up in the air with an icepak on it, I've watched several movies...

Finding Nemo

Lara Kroft, Pandora's Box

Terminator 3

The Sound of Music on DVD

Yes, changing all VHS tapes over to DVD...there is a big difference in quality of the picture...

I have watched "So I Married An Axe Murder" so many times, in fact I want the music they play at his wedding played at my funeral "if you want my body and you think I'm sexy" yea, from the movie on the bagpipes along with"Ding Dong the Witch is Dead, Which ole Witch, the wicked witch"...I think it will crack up all of my friends...going to be a fun funeral, make sure my family makes the pigs in a blanket to serve at the viewing ok?

I just finished watching "Skinwalkers" thumbs_up.gif on one of our local PBS stations here.

Dealing with the Navajo Nation, Produced by Robert Redford

It was on the American Mystery Special which wa very captivating to me.

Posted by: Cailiosa 23-Nov-2003, 10:59 PM
I just saw Master and Commander: Far Side of the World last night and I thought it was pretty good. Some parts were a bit confusing, especially during any of the battle scenes and there were a few scenes I was cringing during -- two scenes in particular having to do with the ship's surgeon dealing with battle wounds-- but other than that I was extremely pleased.
I saw the preview for Return of the King and I can't wait until it comes out!

I rented Michael Collins not too long ago. It stars Liam Neeson as Michael Collins, one of the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland. The language was a little sketchy sometimes and it was a bit violent (though not unreasonably so considering the subject matter), but other than that it was a well done film and a nice addition to what I had been learning in my Irish History class.

Posted by: CelticRose 24-Nov-2003, 01:14 PM
Annabelle -- what a crack up you are! Your funeral sounds like it would be a fun event to attend! I like that idea!

Richard -- I think I have seen that movie, Skinwalkers. I have so many Native American movies and seen so many, I tend to get them confused. unsure.gif

Cailiosa -- Thanks for your review on Master and Commader. I am not much on going to the theatres so I think I will wait for that one to come out on DVD. However, you WILL find me in the theatre when LOTR, ROTK comes out. rolleyes.gif biggrin.gif

Movies??? I watch so many movies I really want a job rating them. I think I could do a pretty good job. Although my parents would disagree. Case in point- Death to smoochie.....I loved it. My dad gave me a funny look and asked me not to rent for them again. wink.gif

Let's see, Ronin...love it. Had to buy it. I have watched it a couple of times. I like the fact that Skip Sudduth is also on one of my fave tv shows-third watch. Lord of the rings...must I say more? wub.gif

The craft, also another one I had to buy. It's actually a pretty good movie, I was sceptical when I had seen the previews. I thought it would be cheesy, but it was well done. How about anger management? I actually thought it was pretty good...I think about a 3 out of 5. There was something missing. But it was good.
Now, I don't really like Adam Sandler much, but if you want to watch something that is just plain silly, I like 8 crazy nights. So did my boys. They quote it alot...especially the 'it's o.k. son you got nice boobs.' jester.gif

Here's a few of my faves:

Labrynth
Meet me in St Louis
Gone with the wind
Abbott and Costello (all especially the baseball show)
Ransom
Pirates of the Caribbean
Lost boys
Karate kid (all)
Sweet sixteen
st elmos fire
breakfast club
(oh my lord, can you tell I grew up in the 80's) partytime.gif
Annie
Horatio Hornblower
Pride and Predjudice (all the movies of hers)
those fabulous baker boys
young guns

Just to name a few. I have a medical problem that keeps me from moving alot of the time so I really have too much time on my hands. But hey, fill the time with some of these cuties and it's all o.k. angel_not.gif

Posted by: CelticRose 27-Nov-2003, 03:04 PM
Therasa! Nice to see you on the site here. Hope you enjoy it here. I, too, have a medical problem that keeps me from doing too much too. However, I am like you in that I watch a lot of movies.

Have you or anyone seen About Schmidt? To me that was one of the most hilarious films I have seen in a long time. Had to buy it! I highly recommend it. Jack Nicholson being one of my favorite actors does his best at comedy, I think. I also have Anger Management and As Good As It Gets.

Posted by: Therasa 28-Nov-2003, 04:29 AM
I HAVE FOUND MY TWIN!!! It's Rose..... tongue.gif

I love Jack Nicholson he's a little hottie. w00t2.gif

Like my reading I do like to watch alot of period movies and shows. But give me a good laugh and I will watch that movie over and over. I loved Anger management, parents hated it. As good as it gets, loved it. What about the Green Mile. I know it's old now, but I have to say that was one heck of a movie. One of my boys was picking the movie for us to watch the other night, so I let him do it without my influence (this time). And you will not believe what he picked....The bridge over the river kwai. I thought he was gonna pluck his eyes out. But, he sat through it and could tell me about it when it was over, he'll never make the mistake of picking one of my movies again. LOL laugh.gif

What about westerns? What westerns have or do you watch? (if any) And what western actor/actresses do you like? New or old?

Scott Barstow- I liked him in the t.v. version of lonesome dove ( I have the video set but neither boy will watch it with me, although they did watch Titanic and gone with the wind)

I love anything with John wayne, and oh my goodness, the guy that played charles ingles on little house on the prarie. Him too. I also love Elvis.... cool2.gif

Posted by: CelticRose 28-Nov-2003, 03:14 PM
laugh.gif laugh.gif WE're twins, eh? I just love anything Jack Nicholson does. I think he is sexy and an excellent actor.

I love Period movies. Those are my favorites. I have watched The Green Mile and loved it! Thought it was outstanding! Have not seen the movie The Bridge of the River Kwai. Did you like it?

I love Westerns, mostly if they have Native Americans in it. I own a ton of Native American movies. I traveled with the Indians on the powwow circuit for three and a half years. Loved it! It is amazing now very similair their beliefs and the ancient Celts are. Western actors? Well I like new actors like Tom Selleck, Kevin Costner. Loved the movie, Tombstone! I loved Val Kilmer in it.

But there is one western film that is coming out in April next year called The Alamo! I am really anxious to see that move as it will have many good actors such as Billy Bob Thornton, Dennis Quaid and my favorite actor: Jason Patric. I am not a big John Wayne fan. Nor do I care that much for Elvis.....sorry. sad.gif

We all have our different tastes.

Last night I finished Thanksgiving Day by taking my family to Timeline, the new sword flick based on the Crichton novel. I thought it was far more entertaining than some of the reviews had indicated. According to my 13-year-old, it was "awesome." My 17-year-old daughter thought it was extemely cool that there were two strong females--Kate and Lady Claire--who found time for both heroics and romance. It was kind of interesting how some folks of Scots ancestry traveled back in time to help the good guy French beat the villainous English. Those who enjoy a blend of fantasy, science fiction, and good old-fashioned swordpay might want to check it out.

BTW, is it me, or does "Bad Santa" sound like a title that should be available at the nearest adult bookshop biggrin.gif ?

Well we watched two movies tonight. Gods and Generals with Robert Duval, Stephen Lang and Jeff Daniels. It is a civil war movie, mainly fought in Virginia and about the many Generals that fought in the war, most specifically General "Stonewall" Jackson and Robert E Lee. It was a very moving film and very sad. It is the first film to a trilogy. I would highly recommend this film to anyone who is interested in civil war history.

Also watched a movie called Georgia with Jennifer Jason Leigh (love her) and Mare Winningham. Both are sisters and both are singers. One can sing and is rich and famous. the other sister cannot sing her way out of a paperbag, but wants desperately to be like her sister. Very good film about wanting a dream so bad you can taste it, even if it means risking it all.

Annabelle, rented "The In-laws" but haven't seen it yet. Looking forward to seeing that one.

Gods and Generals-loved it, it was an excellent movie. I had to buy it. cool.gif

I really want to see Timeline. That one looks good. I did see Time machine, I like it. My sister didn't though. She thought it was cheesy. This coming from girl who loves Mike Myers. (no offence to him, you have to admit he is cheesy though.)

I just watched Charlott Gray, I think I spelled it right. I loved it. Great movie. Next, is me and the boys renting the rugrats go wild. I think those characters are so adorable. I like that they don't have any of the sexual jokes in it. Not all of them go over the kids heads, especially since they are ten now. Gotta be alot more careful now.

Rose-bridge of the river kwai. Ilove it. It's one of the best war movies. Another war one I like is 'the big red one'. (can't wait to see the responses after this one. rolleyes.gif )

My grandmum just gave me some of her movies and in them was 'remains of the day', 'the moonstone', and 'women of valor'.

they are good movies. I watched the moonstone again today.

Can anyone recomend any other period shows.

I understan about Elvis, not alot of my friends like him. Actually I am the only one. My sister loves him too though, we fight over who gets to borrow the movies from mum's place. LOL

And dad has to check us before we leave. We keep sneaking his westerns. I loved Tombstone. I can't even think of any names of the westerns I have.

Have you seen the sixth sense, ransom, gladiator, wrong turn? I have the first three (bought them), and I rented the last one. I am going to watch it tonight. I also watched jeeper creepers.......NEVER AGAIN!!!

Take care all

I have seen both Ransom and Gladiator. Both were very good movies, I thought. One movie I want to see and still haven't is "The Patriot." Isn't that in the time period of the Revolutionary war? I remember very little about that period from my history classes in high school and college. Even though it probably won't be historically accurate, I still would like to see it.

have you seen Last of the Mohicans? I think that was during the Revolutionary war too, wasn't it? unsure.gif

What about Elizabeth, The Virgin Queen? I LOVE that movie and bought it. Seen it a hundred times, I think!

I liked Mystic Pizza -- good chick flick! wink.gif

Paula! I bought the movie, Last of the Mohicans, a long time ago too! Watched it many times too! Awesome movie and I like you, am a sucker for Native American movies anyway. I spent $35.00 on a video of Crazy Horse that was supposed to be accurate historically. Plus the lead Indian guy who played Crazy Horse was pretty easy on the eyes as well! rolleyes.gif

hey Celeste

If you loved Blazing Saddles you will really love Rustlers Rhapsody.

Not near the Buzz of the Mel Brooks flick but it is incredibly funny star studded cast. Unfortunately it is availabel only in VHS. I do not generally watch movies more than once but I have almost memorized this one lol

Hello all-

Rose-
I have seen mystic pizza, that was a great little movie. Elizabeth, bought it. I loved that one. What about Shakespear in love, it was just adorable. The last of the mohicans, I believe my sister has that one. I haven't seen it yet though. Maybe I should take back all her other movies and borrow that one.

The patriot, I loved it!
Has anyone seen Biloxi blues? Matthew Broderick was the best in that movie. And I also loved him in Ferris Buellers day off. That was one of the funniest movies ever.
I just went and bought myself and the kids some of the christmas standards the other day-White christmas
Rudolph
(goodlord, lost the name of the movie, the one with Jimmy Stewart in it, the angel..... wink.gif )
Another one I LOVE to kill a mockingbird. I watched in school as an english assignment and loved it ever since.

Take care all

My husband brought home a movie this weekend that suprised me. Tears of The Sun with Bruce Willis. My first thought was " oh great, another war movie". I cried almost all the way thru. crybaby.gif It was a very good movie.

Posted by: CelticRose 02-Dec-2003, 01:17 PM
Last night I watched The In-laws. It was a very funny movie. One is a CIA agent and the other a foot doctor who are put together because of their children getting married. Love Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks! Candice Bergen was a great addition too! She is one funny lady. I would highly recommend this if you like comedy.

I just saw X-2 this weekend and really liked it but the one that suprised me was Bringing down the House with Steve Martin and Queen LaTifa.

I would recomend both

Listen, honey, you watch that movie and you are seeing small town Georgia back when my parents were kids! It is one of the best portrayals of small town life EVER, the way neighbors are in their caring for one another & kids get into mischief during play, and also in the townsfolks suspicions and prejudices... its not that way now, there are too many new people moving here from all over, so everything has changed.
My dad is a lawyer (retired now) but he says that he always wanted to be a small-town lawyer and help those who really needed it, instead of being some big corporate lawyer out to get all the money he can from his clients. Remember how one farmer gives Atticus food to pay for legal services? Dad has over the years received a shotgun, a big painting, golf clubs, and no telling what else from people who just didn't have the money at the time but had a real need for legal help. I've always respected dad for being that kind of attorney.

I watched the movie all the way thru with my hubby & children just a week or so ago, and we all enjoyed it... its silly, but what prompted me to get everyone to watch it was when my daughter and I were watching some show and a character said 'Having a Boo Radley moment, are we??' I doubled over laughing but Lauren didn't "get it"... so now, after watching the movie, she gets it.

WEll, I finally got around to watching The Patriot with Mel Gibson. I am a history buff and have been wanting to watch this movie for a long time, but hubby would rather watch murder and suspense movies. So I rented this on my own and watched it by myself yesterday and loved it! Plus, I love anything that Mel Gibson does. What I liked about this movie is that while there were battle scenes, it didn't totally consume the whole movie. There was a story about a man and his children and what they had to go through during a very difficult time in history.

I watched "Sinbad" with my sisters. I thought it was going to be stupid - -but it was actually very entertaining! I was very surprised.
My students and I watched "Les Miserables" the 1978 version. They enjoyed it. The ending is different from the book totally.
"Stand and Deliver" is a great feel good movie - the teacher takes a math class and makes them do Calculas and pass the AP exam. This is no ordinary class - it's in East Los Angeles with many poor Hispanics.
X-2 was really good. I loved the Mozart "Requiem" in the beginning.

I love French cinema. During the Edinburgh Festival, a film festival is held at the same time.... I go to so many international films that might not make it to general release.

One of my absolute favourites is Jean de Florette - starring Yves Montand, Danie Arteuil (sp!) and Gerard Depardieu... Just a really superb film. I have it on video and watch it time after time.

The movies I have seen recently are Mystic River directed by Clint Eastwood (This particular film was sort of dark and depressing, but I enjoyed the plot and Sean Penn's performance); Master and Commander, Far Side of the World (I really enjoyed this film, but was worried about my friend who couldn't follow to well because of the British expressions and accents. I love British films and television, so it was easy to follow along); Bruce Almighty (wasn't that great).

My all time favorite movies that I recommend are:

Schindler's List

Saving Private Ryan (I guess I like this one because it gave me a glimpse of what my grandfather went through during WWII. He served for three years---fighting in four theatres)

Braveheart (I know everyone has probably seen this one. Even though it is not totally historically accurate, I really enjoyed it)

Life's Wonderful---(It is an unlikely comedy set in WWII era in Italy. Pre-war: A Jewish man (played by Bernini (spelling??) who marries an Italian woman. Later they have a son. The Nazis eventually take him and his son Joshua to a consentration camp. The father plays a game of pretend to keep his son from realizing what is actually going on. The father is able to continue this until the end. It was surprisingly funny, heart warming and sad. It is in Italian, so you will have subtitles, but after a while you forget about it and enjoy the movie)

Lord of the Rings (First two films of the trilogy were awesome, and I can't wait for ROTK)

The Color Purple (old but a good film)

My Big, Fat, Greek Wedding---(This was a delightful comedy about a grown woman still living at home and unmarried with no children---and in a Greek family this is unheard of. I laughed so hard)

A Bronx Tale---(Robert De Niro plays a supporting role in this one. The actor who plays his son is the main character. This movie really surprised me. I really enjoyed it.)

It's A Wonderful Life---(by Frank Capra starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed. It has become an American Classic and ritual---It is watched every Christmas Season by millions.)

Dead Poets Society---(Starring Robin Williams)

I can't think of any more at this time. Maybe when I have time to think I'll post them later.

I mostly watch documentries, especially the ones made by Ken Burns (I'm a history buff). I also watch a lot of the Discovery Channel, Masterpiece Theatre, Mystery, BBC television, and the A & E or Bravo Channel.

I watched the New Van Diesel Film " A Man Apart" . I really like his films.
Good movie too. Good action movie.

Then I watched for my birthday "Bruce Almighty". Oh my Gosh, I laughed so much...everyone should watch it...one of his better movies.

Loved the movie, Tombstone! I loved Val Kilmer in it.

Val Kilmer's performance in Tombstone was beyond any Ocsar performance before seen. He left me speechless. (and that ain't easy) biggrin.gif
He played such a depraved character and yet his devotion to his friend was beyond what most would ever consider. What's the scripture? I know I'm paraphrasing - Greater love hath no man that he be willing to lay down his life for his friends. After the river scene, when Doc Holliday leaves cover in the middle of the gun battle to stand next to Wyatt, and the others are asking Doc why he did it. Doc's answer was Wyatt is his friend. The other guy says - hell I've got a lot of friends and Doc answers - I don't. I found that scene so moving.

OK, stopping now, but there are parts of that movie that are way beyond excellent.

Elspeth! I have the movie Tombstone and you just reminded me of one of my favorite scenes in there. It's been awhile since I watched it, but now you got me wanting to get it out and watch it again! I thought he deserved an Oscar for his performance too, but oh well. There are a lot of actors out there that are overlooked for their performances. It seems like the more popular you are, the award goes to you. Like Julia Roberts. I just don't get it. I mean she is a good actress and has a great smile. And her best movie was Erin Brockovich, but she is the same in all her movies. There are other actors out there that are more deserving, me thinks! Just my tupence! smile.gif

My whole family LOVES 'Pirates'! We saw it twice on the big screen, and bought the dvd last week when it came out. I've been a Johnny Depp fan since 'Edward Scissorhands', 'Chocolat' and my all-time favorite 'Benny & Joon'.
But "Pirates" has a good cast all 'round, doesn't it - Orlando is delightful, and so was the chick love interest (don't know her name)... and to see Geofrey Rush cutting up like he does after seeing him in 'Shine' several years ago, well what a change in role! I don't know about you, but here's how I'd rank the best Vietnam movies:

Another who knows Top Secret!!! I was in college when that movie came out and I can still see my friend and I in the theater seeing the preview for Top Secret. We laughed so hard in that 3 minutes we both had tears running down our faces. We actually got it out and watched it again a few months ago and surprisingly, it was still funny.

Know the part where he plays the guitar and talks about being separated from his mother at the semi-annual Washington's Birthday sale at the department store?
The creators of the movie wanted him to practice on the guitar, to make it look convincing. So, being the consummate actor he is, he practiced and practiced to learn to play the song - and they let him. Then when he got it down, he went to them to let them know he could do it. They looked at him and said never mind, they weren't going to do it that way. They had set him up, never intending for him to play, they were just messing with him. (it was much funnier when he told the story unsure.gif )

I love AIRPLANE too. One of my favorites is the lights on the runway. biggrin.gif

I picked up "Zulu" in the bargain bin at WalMart on DVD for $4.99. wink.gif I don't believe that "Zulu Dawn" has ever been released on DVD, so we watch it on VHS. If ever I find it on DVD, I will snatch it up forthwith. biggrin.gif

Once I can get near the Walmart again I will pick up Zulu. I have seen a few copies of Zulu Dawn on DVD but I think it was the English version, which will not play in our players on this side of the pond (unless it is a universal player, which mine is not)

You could even watch Shaka Zulu first, and make a day out of it!

I just bought the extended version of LOTR TTT and I have watched that. I have even watched all of the extras. (Had plenty of time sitting on the couch with the flu)

I saw a wonderful oldie last night - You Can't Take it With You. Huge cast of the biggies of the time. Great message like It's a Wonderful Life. I think it's another Capra film. I didn't listen too close, was sick on the couch like RavenWing.
Funny watching Lionel Barrymore as the good guy with Jimmy Stewart when later he becomes the baddie of IAWL.

I just saw "The Return of the King" over the weekend---It was wonderful!!! If this movie doesn't win about 6 to 10 Oscars, then the whole system is rigged. Viggo (Aragorn) should win the Oscar for Best Actor, and Elijah Wood should at least be nominated for Best Actor, while Ian M. should win Best Supporting Actor, and Sean Astin at least nominated for Best Supporting Actor and so on. The whole cast was surperb! Peter Jackson should win Best Director and the Movie itself should win Best Picture!!

CelticWish

Celtic Wish,

I thought I had it figured out almost right away, but since there are probably others that hasn't seen it and it appears you have, I will kind of talk in a code.

I thought I had it figured out until the car blew up. Then after the Judges Chamber, which blew my mind way, then I knew I was on track again and then I thought that way until the very end. But looking back at it, I should have figured it out right away.

I hope you understood all of that. wink.gif

But it had to be one of the top ten "Who Done It" movies I have ever seen. I am usually pretty good at figuring them out ahead of time but this one blew me away.

I have to agree that Identity was one of the best who done it's that I have seen!!
Yes, I understood what you were saying. biggrin.gif Just when I thought I had figured it out something would happen and I was baffled again. unsure.gif It was a great movie!!

Have you ever watched the movie Shattered? It's an older movie, but, I never guessed the ending to that one either!!

Roisin-Teagan,

I have yet to see Seabiscuit. I usually wait until movies come on pay-per-view or if I miss there I wait until in comes on the movie channels. I do buy some movies on dvd but, not alot. If I see them and I like them I buy them. biggrin.gif

I went last night and saw ROTK again! clap.gif I would only go to the theatre is because I am a LOTR fanatic. HOwever, I had many loud mouths in the theatre who couldn't shut up, restless kids. People walking in front of me having to go to the bathroom, etc. ! I at want time want to scream out "shut up!!!!!!!!!!" But I managed to refrain. Even my husband was getting annoyed! The dialogue in that movie is hard enough to understand without people being disruptive. Which is why I don't venture out to the theatres that often either. I prefer my couch, the pause button and my subtitles! laugh.gif

Posted by: Roisin-Teagan 03-Jan-2004, 02:01 PM
Rosemary,

We too had the same problem when we first saw ROTK. A few people behind us must have been drunk, because they would constantly make comments or say, "Ahhh, poor Frodo," and laugh at the most inappropriate times. sad.gif I only heard these people when the movie got really quiet and you had to strain to hear the dialogue. At one point I'd said "Shhhhhhhhhish" really loud but it did little good.

Celticwish,

I only go to the movies if I know it's going to be really, really good---then it's worth the money and the trouble. As for buying Dvd's, I only buy the one's I loved on the big screen. rolleyes.gif

Roisin,
angel_not.gif

Posted by: CelticRose 03-Jan-2004, 02:10 PM
Yeah, Roisin! Aren't those people annoying? I mean they make it bad for the rest of us. It's bad enough you have to spend so much to go to the theatre! I only buy DVDs after I have rented them and liked them well enough.

I am embarrassed to say I have not seen Seabisquit or even Pirates of the Carribean yet! I keep meaning to rent those, one day soon I will. smile.gif

Posted by: Roisin-Teagan 03-Jan-2004, 10:54 PM
Rosemary, you got the right idea...renting the movies first and then buying the ones you really love. Hummm...sounds like a plan. We have surround sound in our living room, and if we turn off the lights and eat popcorn it will feel just like we're at the movies---minus the annoying loudmouth people. wink.gif cool.gif

Posted by: CelticRose 03-Jan-2004, 11:23 PM
Roisin! We have the very same thing in our living room too! Surround sound, pause breaks, popcorn, drinks, subtitles! (hee hee), bathroom breaks, and no rude people! Love it! clap.gif

I have to agree with a couple of changes.

1. My Wife and dog are in bed.

Well, I watched the Taylor of Panama the other day, I had seen it before, but for some reason had seemed to miss most of it. I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone other then the fact that it was filmed in Panama and so the scenery is exactly what you would see here. A nice scene with Samy and Sandra Sandoval singing 'Gallina Fina' shot at the Gamboa Rainforest Resort resteraunt. But unfortunately the movie was full of all those old cliches about Panama. Oh well.

I saw Underworld last weekend. It was alright. The script and cinematography was excellent, but they really did a poor job of casting. There were only three characters that were remotely decent. The two leads, (vamp chick and wolf dude), and the fellow who played the old werewolf who was after the lead guy. There were a few scenes that didn't really fit. It seemed like she was in love with this guy after seeing him for a few seconds in the subway.

The two head hancho vamps were terrible. Like they were cast from Sesame Street.

I loved What Women Want. That was hilarious!!!

I haven't seen the pirate movie yet.

Posted by: Annabelle 15-Jan-2004, 08:59 PM
Do you mean "Pirates of the Caribean
Curse of the Black Pearl"

It was a great movie. I went to see it 4 times in the theaters. I want a new 46" widescreen TV but we are fixing to leave on a trip to Scotland and I can't do both so the TV will have to wait.

You'll really enjoy it. I'm crazy about Johnny Depp!

I need to spend some time painting myself. I haven't done that for a while. I do oil paintings. Mostly scenery or animals. Someday when the kids leave me alone long enough to get in a couple of brush strokes. biggrin.gif

Talk to ya soon.

I've gotten back into the 'wildlife art' during the last two years, after having spent about 10 years doing landscapes and portraits... horses have caught my fancy, and its been such fun getting back to trying to capture on paper their delightful personalities and high spirits. Its fun, but working in colored pencils (like I prefer for animal sketchs) is so much tighter & detailed, it feels a bit restrictive after working with pastels for so long.

With pastels you can make big broad strokes of color, its exhilerating to the max! Its more like painting... what do you use, oils or acrylics?

Hi SB!!

I work with oils. I never got into acrylics for some reason. My aunt only uses acrylics I think.
I worked with pastels a little bit years ago when I was in school but, I never got into those too much either. I am very messy, so me and pastels has a love hate relationship. biggrin.gif
I like working with pencil, too.

I finally got around to watching The Order last night. I found it very boring, even though Heath Ledger was nice to look at. wub.gif

Rosemary, I had to same reaction. I thought or expected to be sooooo funny that it was a big-let-down when I finally saw it. I guess different strokes for different folks? wink.gif

Tomorrow I'm going to see ROTK with a close friend who hasn't seen it yet. I knew we had to go see it soon before it leaves the theatres.

Really enjoyed the movie, ha! Not! Going to pitch that kid out next time.

We had a "Banderas Night" as a girls night out and watched "Desperado" and "Once upon a time in Mexico". To my mind, the series isn't bad, Johnny Depp acted brilliantly but I still think, "Desperado" is unbeatable...

I saw the Last Samuri starring Tom Cruise at the theatre this past Saturday. I was really surprised...It was a wonderful film. I also think Cruise should have won the Golden Globe for best male actor instead of Penn. Yes, Sean Penn's performance was top notch in Mystic River, but I think Cruise did a better job conveying his character's demons and the evolution his character went through toward the end of the story.

Oh well,

Ooooh, that is one of the funniest movies EVER!!! The first time I saw it, I laughed to the point of tears 3 times - my sides ached for hours. What set me off most was that scene where Bruce is watching the other anchorman doing a broadcast, and he makes the poor guy squeak & squawk... what a hoot!

And I howled when Bruce tells everyone off on camera, when he's at the falls on that boat & finds out the other guy got the anchorman's job.

Wonderful movie! We got it on DVD as soon as it came out..

I watched a rather interesting movie last night and today. And Yes, I did say twice. But that was to hopefully see if I could get the concept of the film.

It was "Punch-Drunk Love" with Adam Sandler and Emily Watson.

A Warning to anyone who wants to see it. Do not expect your typical Adam Sandler Movie because it is not there.

In my opinion, the jury is still out on whether it is a good movie or not. Just really different. unsure.gif

In my Wife's opinion, it is boring! She said that "it is one of those movies that you have to watch to the end hoping it would get better."

We've been talking about taking the girls to see RoTK, but still haven't made it. I don't even know if it's still showing here, but I hope so. They've seen "Fellowship" and "Two Towers", and would like to see the "Return". It's just been so busy! Also, RoTK veers away from the Book in so many places (read "the writers inserted some major fantasies of their own that went wayyyy off into the woods!!") that we're not sure if we want to see the movie again just yet. I can handle a bit of judicious editing and re-writing, but that was a lot of changes! I'm most upset about the way it denegrates Arwen! Never, ever, ever(!!) did she even consider leaving Aragorn to stay with her people, never, ever did her love for him waver even the slightest, and never, ever was her lifeforce bound into the outcome of the Quest to destroy the Ring!! Where in Heaven's name did they get any of those ideas?? Also, Sam never, ever, ever left Frodo's side because of any argument-let alone begin to head back towards home without Frodo! The only time they were seperated was when Sam thought Frodo had been killed by Shelob, and then Sam was only out of sight for a few yards before turning back to protect Frodo's "body" from the orcs. There were some other bones of contention, but those are the major points.

Sooo, we may not make it to RoTK with the girls. They may have to wait until it's released onto DVD.

(Stepping off my very high soapbox again now. Thanks for letting me spout. I feel better! angel_not.gif )

Actually Dreamer get back up on your soapbox girl. I haven't had time to read the 3rd book so your telling me all of the things they did got me more interested in catching up on my reading.

Today I stayed home this afternoon and caught up on the laundry after my trip to NC and watched my "happy thoughts movie" The Sound of Music! It always makes me smile and I am crocheting a baby blanket for my first grandchild when ever they get pregnant which I'm hoping soon. I'm slow so I started ahead of time. My son called this afternoon and we were chatting about his brother's wedding in June and he said there may be a chance that we have "Launch" in the grandchild department. Too early to say for sure but I told him to give it another 2 weeks before doing a pregnancy test. Gosh if it's correct this is going to give me an attitude adjustment.
Oh my, I'm too young to be a grandmother right? Please oh please oh please say I'm too young.

I just saw "The Passion Of The Christ" on Wed, opening night. Human language is insufficient to express what the movie conveyed. I was profoundly moved beyond my five senses!

The moive was magnificent!!!! While the brutal torture of Christ was hard to bare, the artistry was moving and beautiful. Jim Caviezel's portrayal of Jesus is magnetic and enthralling. His performance is brilliant!!! (A few film critics said he should get an Oscar for his performance, I agree!). The relationship between Mary and Jesus is riveting. In addition, the cinema photography is alluring and magical, which frames the last 12 hours of Christ's life beautifully.

Mel Gibson is a master as a film maker and director. I will repeat what one film critic said...Roeper, from "Ebert and Roeper at the Movies" said, "This is a 25 million dollar movie that looks like a 200 million dollar movie." Both Ebert and Roeper gave "The Passion Of The Christ" "Two thumbs up!! "

Eventhough there has been a lot of controversy about this film being anti-Semitic, it is not. I've read many reviews from Rabbi's and one in particular from the "Toward Tradition" organization (which is on the Internet), which all say this film is not anti-Semitic. The only one's making all the noise is Andy Rooney from CBS, and Charlie Rich from "The New York Times". Both of which never even went and saw the movie. When Mel Gibson was making the movie in Italy, the New York Times' Charlie Rich wrote an article attacking Mel Gibson and his father---trying to insinuate that because Gibson's father believed the Holocaust never took place that Mel Gibson held to those same beliefs. Looked like a smear campaign. A few Jews from the Anti-Defamation League also said the movie was anti-Semitic. Robert Downey, Jr. who is Jewish said that the film was not anti-Semitic, and he also said certain media elites are trying to destroy one of our good guys.

Glad to help you out Rose. After you see the movie for yourself be sure to post your review, because I'd like to know what you think of "The Passion Of The Christ".

I'm going to see it again tomorrow with my brother and his girlfriend. I know there so much more I'll catch the second time around. This is the most powerful movie I've ever seen in my life!!! I was blown away!!!

Really? It wasn't too violent or brutal for you? That' s what I am afraid of and hesitates me from seeing it. somehow me thinks I could deal with it better when it comes out in DVD. I don't know.

Don't hesitate...Rose. No it is not too violent interms of understanding exactly what He went through for the whole world!

CR,

Like Roisin-Teagan said, "Don't hesitate!" Saw The Passion of the Christ last night. Take KLleenex, but go. My husband said he thought it is still the greatest story but the movie was too Hollywood for him. I am still reeling from the emotion and the message.

Posted by: CelticRose 01-Mar-2004, 12:12 PM
Thanks Roisin and JaneyMae! I am going to work on my schedule this week and go see it. Had already thought I would need to take my box of Kleenex! thumbs_up.gif

An apt assessment of The Passion"

The Passion as viewed by Jody Dean CBS Anchor in Dallas There've been a ton of emails and forwards floating around recently from those who've had the privilege of seeing Mel Gibson's "The Passion Of The
Christ" prior to its actual release. I thought I'd give you my reaction
after seeing it last night.

The screening was on the first night of "Elevate!", a weekend-long seminar for young people at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano.

There were about 2,000 people there, and the movie was shown after several speakers had taken the podium. It started around 9 and finished around 11...so I reckon the film is about two hours in length. Frankly, I lost complete track of time - so I can't be sure.

I want you to know that I started in broadcasting when I was 13-years-old. I've been in the business of writing, performing, production, and
broadcasting for a long time. I've been a part of movies, radio,
television, stage and other productions - so I know how things are done. I know about soundtracks and special effects and make-up and screenplays. I think I've seen just about every kind of movie or TV show ever made - from extremely inspirational to extremely gory. I read a lot, too - and have covered stories and scenes that still make me wince. I also have a vivid imagination, and have the ability to picture things as they must have happened - or to anticipate things as they will be portrayed. I've also seen an enormous amount of footage from Gibson's film, so I thought I knew what was coming.

But there is nothing in my existence - nothing I could have read, seen,
heard, thought, or known - that could have prepared me for what I saw on screen last night.

This is not a movie that anyone will "like". I don't think it's a movie
anyone will "love". It certainly doesn't "entertain". There isn't even the
sense that one has just watched a movie. What it is, is an experience - on a level of primary emotion that is scarcely comprehensible. Every shred of human preconception or predisposition is utterly stripped away. No one will eat popcorn during this film. Some may not eat for days after they've seen it. Quite honestly, I wanted to vomit. It hits that hard.

I can see why some people are worried about how the film portrays the Jews. They should be worried. No, it's not anti-Semitic. What it is, is entirely shattering. There are no "winners". No one comes off looking "good" - except Jesus. Even His own mother hesitates. As depicted, the Jewish leaders of Jesus' day merely do what any of us would have done - and still do. They protected their perceived "place" - their sense of safety and security, and the satisfaction of their own "rightness". But everyone falters. Caiphus judges. Peter denies. Judas betrays. Simon the Cyrene balks. Mark runs away.

Pilate equivocates. The crowd mocks. The soldiers laugh. Longinus still
stabs with his pilus. The centurion still carries out his orders. And as
Jesus fixes them all with a glance, they still turn away. The Jews, the
Romans, Jesus' friends - they all fall. Everyone, except the Principal
Figure. Heaven sheds a single, mighty tear - and as blood and water spew from His side, the complacency of all creation is eternally shattered.

The film grabs you in the first five seconds, and never lets go. The
brutality, humiliation, and gore is almost inconceivable - and still
probably doesn't go far enough. The scourging alone seems to never end, and you cringe at the sound and splatter of every blow - no matter how steely your nerves. Even those who have known combat or prison will have trouble, no matter their experience - because this Man was not conscripted. He went willingly, laying down His entirety for all. It is one thing for a soldier to die for his countrymen. It's something else entirely to think of even a common man dying for those who hate and wish to kill him. But this is no common man. This is the King of the Universe. The idea that anyone could or would have gone through such punishment is unthinkable - but this Man was completely innocent, completely holy - and paying the price for others. He screams as He is laid upon the cross, "Father, they don't know. They don't know..."

What Gibson has done is to use all of his considerable skill to portray the most dramatic moment of the most dramatic events since the dawn of time. There is no escape. It's a punch to the gut that puts you on the canvas, and you don't get up. You are simply confronted by the horror of what was done - what had to be done - and why. Throughout the entire film, I found myself apologizing.

What you've heard about how audiences have reacted is true. There was no sound after the film's conclusion. No noise at all. No one got up. No one moved. The only sound one could hear was sobbing. In all my years of public life, I have never heard anything like that.

I told many of you that Gibson had reportedly re-shot the ending to include more "hope" through the Resurrection? That's not true. The Resurrection scene is perhaps the shortest in the entire movie - and yet it packs a punch that can't be quantified. It is perfect. There is no way to negotiate the meaning out of it. It simply asks, "Now, what will you do?"

I'll leave the details to you, in the hope that you will see the film - but
one thing above all stands out, and I have to tell you about it. It comes
from the end of Jesus' temptations in the wilderness - where the Bible says Satan left him "until a more opportune time". I imagine Satan never quit tempting Christ, but this film captures beyond words the most opportune time. At every step of the way, Satan is there at Jesus' side - imploring Him to quit, reasoning with Him to give up, and seducing Him to surrender. For the first time, one gets a heart-stopping idea of the sense of madness that must have enveloped Jesus - a sense of the evil that was at His very elbow. The physical punishment is relentless -but it's the sense of psychological torture that is most overwhelming.

He should have quit. He should have opened His mouth. He should have called 10,000 angels. No one would have blamed Him. What we deserve is obvious.

But He couldn't do that. He wouldn't do that. He didn't do that. He doesn't do that. It was not and is not His character. He was obedient, all the way to the cross - and you feel the real meaning of that phrase in a place the human heart usually doesn't dare to go. You understand that we are called to that same level of obedience. With Jesus' humanity so irresistibly on display, you understand that we have no excuse.

There is no place to hide.

The truth is this: Is it just a "movie"? In a way, yes. But it goes far
beyond that, in a fashion I've never felt - in any forum. We may think we "know". We know nothing. We've gone 2,000 years - used to the idea of a pleasant story, and a sanitized Christ. We expect the ending, because we've heard it so many times. God forgive us. This film tears that all away. It's as close as any of us will ever get to knowing, until we fully know.

Paul understood. "Be urgent, in and out of season."

Luke wrote that Jesus reveals Himself in the breaking of the bread.
Exactly. "The Passion Of The Christ" shows that Bread being broken.

WOW! That was long.......................................

Wow! That was wonderful! JaneyMae! What I want to know is does the film touch on the resurrection at all? If I read the above right, it does a little, huh?

I am ashamed I have yet to go see it,but I will.

Posted by: JaneyMae 07-Mar-2004, 01:03 AM
The last scene deals with the resurection and gives you hope. Other than that................... I'm ready to see it again and look at the not-so-obvious things.

You'll get there but be prepared to be sad sadwalk.gif

QUOTE (Roisin-Teagan @ Feb 27 2004, 11:42 AM)

Here is another review:

"Gibson's film represents by far the most moving, substantive, andartistically successful adaptation of Biblical material ever attempted by Hollywood." ---Michael Medved (Jewish), Film Critic and Radio Show Host.

I'll second that. I just seen it myself. and its a wonderful movie. One thing we might start a discussion on is, Rome was supposed to be civilized, It was supposed to be the heart of civilization and the things they did to christ were barbaric. So the question is: If Romans were civilized, how bad were the real barbarians like the Huns, the Goths the Germans, and even the Pic's compare to the Romans.

Posted by: Mayte2 24-Mar-2004, 04:30 AM
The movie I can watch time and time again is The Wizard of Oz. Its fantastic. Judy Garland is superb as the little innocent lost in a strange world of Munchkins and Wicked Witches. The colour change where she enters her new world is amazing for its time. The effects of the tornado are brilliant (all done with a sheet).

I rememebr the first time I saw it. It was Christmas (as it always is when WoO is on!!). I was watching the scene where Dorothy is in the witches castle and she`s looking into the crystal ball. The ball goes all cloudy and Dorothy`s Auntie Em comes into view calling for Dorothy. Dorothy is crying "I`m here Aunti Em, I`m here", then, the mists swirl in the ball and all of a sudden the Wicked Witch appears screeching in a mock Dorothy voice "Aunti Em Aunti Em" and then she cackles. It frightened the living daylights out of me then and it still does now!!

That film has crossed the bridge of time. Even with all the special effects of today, I don`t think anything will beat the Wizard for ingenuity and style.

Volcano- yeah, it's kind of like a train wreck, you know? You don't really want to watch, but it is so horrible that you feel compelled to see how just how horrible it can get. Being in emergency services, if we handled a similar situation that badly, we would all be strung up from whatever lampposts would be left. Grrrrrrr.

Druids- Silly me, I thought that it might actually be related to Morgan Llewellen's book by the same name. It had about as much to do with that book, as Starship Troopers had to do with Heinlein's book. The only movie that I have ever seen that worked with the book was Contact, but then, Carl Sagan was their technical advisor, so they didn't really have a choice. wink.gif

I just watched Alexander Nevsky. It was excellent. Made in 1939, by Sergei Eisenstein (Battleship Potemkin), it was all in Russian, but with English subtitles. Really interesting treatment of the Teutonic Knight inavsion of Russia in the 13th century. And of course, the score by Prokofiev was a delight to listen to.

Just my tuppence.

I was rather excited about Starship Troopers, and was bitterly disapointed by the movie.

Chistopher Lamberts "Druids" was, in my humble opinion, unwatchable. And, no, Paula, you are not to be sacrificed...at least yet.

Every time I think of Sergei Eisenstein and Battleship Potemkin and Alexander Nevsky I think of the first few chapters of Clancy's Red Storm Rising...

That last several movies I've seen have been quite good, actually for I am educating myself on "movies that I either a) haven't seen in a long time or cool.gif haven't seen at all"...we get a lotta spare time at work so we watch DVD's! Here we go, my reviews are included:

****=Classic ***=Great **=OK *=Never see again

Saving Private Ryan ****

This is a great film, I must say...can't think of why I had never seen it as a matter of fact! I was very moved throughout the entire film because you realize what all the soldiers in WW2 went through. Plus, the cast is spectacular...Hanks, Damon, Burns, excellent!

The Passion of the Christ ****
Very moving and explicit at the same time. I felt like I was back in the times of Christ viewing the most ultimate sacrifice for mankind. Truly an emotional journey of a film that Mel Gibson deserves an Oscar for!

Kill Bill Vol. 1 ****
Action-packed and full of all kinds of surprises! Classic Tarantino; Uma rocks the house in this great piece of cinema! Haven't seen the second part yet but plan on it very soon!

Lost in Translation **
I didn't really see what the hub-bub was all about this year surrounding this film. Granted, Bill Murray is superb, as usual; Scarlet Johannsen was very beautiful, as usual...I guess I just don't get into too many "indy" films that are so drab as "Lost in Translation" was. Everybody has their good and bad, right?

Lone Star State of Mind *
I don't care if I ever see this movie again because it gets dumber by the second! I watched it on a whim 'cause it was a video someone recommended for my mom to see. Mom didn't like it either. It revolves around the redneck life of a Texas teen (played by Joshua Jackson) who is going out with his sister (half-sister actually) and fathered by a horrible portrayal by John Cougar Mellencamp. The recipe for disaster is that the film tries to be all "Tarantino-like", brash with a taste of Texas pride, but it falls flat on its face immediately. I just didn't like the story at all, check it out for the first and last time!

Gangs of New York ****
I was impressed by this film's gusto in portraying the anguished confrontations between 19th century New York Irish immigrants and their enemies, the "native" Irishmen. Daniel Day-Lewis gives a stunning performance, as does DiCaprio. I was blown away by the violent scenes of fighting and the ruggedness of Scorcese's style. See this movie over and over again!

Catch Me If You Can ****
Let's face it, Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio work well together! This movie is a trip, really. I was impressed by Speilberg's attention to the story and moving it along so well with such great cinematography. Chris Walken also makes a memorable performance! What a great film!

There you have it folks, more to come soon as I continue viewing some great cinema!

Went with my daughter to see "13 going on 30" Easter weekend. My daughter is a hugh Jennifer Garner fan and she wanted to see this one. It had some very funny scenes (the cell phone ringing and the Thriller dance scene) and all in all was a cute movie. A big change from Garner's Sydney character in "Alias."

Also my daughter gave me the DVD "Dreamkeeper." This was a mini series last year about an Native American storyteller going to the All Nations Powwow with his troubled grandson. Fascinating movie and the behind the scenes interviews with the cast is even better.

Been to see two films recently,
"Shaun of the dead" and "Win a date with Tad Hamilton"

Got to see both for free!!!!

"shaun" is a great wee film - tongue-in-cheek zombie film . I was very pleasantly surprised. Well worth a view.

"Tad Hamilton" was a typical Hollywood chick-flick and it definitely delivered. There was a real ahhhh factor at the end. Again worth a look.

Hey Paula! I have a picture of Jason Patric on a horse with a gun. Does that count? laugh.gif

I am anxious that Master and Commander is out. I hope to rent it this weekend. Scotsman, Billy Boyd, is in it. The lad from LOTR who played Pippin! Yippee!

I watched Master and Commander with Russell Crowe last night. It was good. A lot of sad scenes, but that is part of war. I thought the movie was good, but not that good. I was kind of dsappointed. The one time hubby didn't want subtitles and I couldn't understand half what they were saying could have been part of it! cool.gif

I rented The Italian Job again the other night. By the time I got there, Blockbuster was out of Kill Bill Volume I. The Italian Job may have had Mark Wahlberg, Edward Norton and Donald Sutherland in it, but the real stars of the movie were the Mini Coopers they used biggrin.gif .

Hey Rose, I saw it with a friend last year at the theatre. I had to stop and explain to her what they were saying every five minutes. I'm a BBC buff---Exxon-Mobil Masterpiece Theatre and Mystery shows help and shows like the such. I love British humor and drama. But I guess if you can't follow the story you really can't enjoy it either. Sorry. sad.gif

I saw KILL BILL vol. 1 last night. Not bad. The action sequences reminded me of old Anime'.

All and all good film. I will have to go see Vol. 2 sometime soon.

Cheers!

In the past few weeks I have watched X. I didn't understand what all was going on, so I was really confused the whole time.

This isn't really a movie, but I watched Eddie Izzard's Dress to Kill. He is so funny.

Thanks Mike!!

We all enjoyed seeing that, and the girls watched it many times until they had the whole thing memorized- especially Malfoy's comuppance (sp?) from Hermione! What a treat! Can't wait for the movie now. June's too far away.

Roisin! I was soooooooooooo mad at hubby for not allowing me to watch Master and Commander with subtitles! I feel like I missed most of the movie because I just could not understand half what was going on. However, from what I gathered from the movie it was just Gladiator on water, so maybe I didn't miss that much to begin with. rolleyes.gif unsure.gif
