hello my friends,
a long time ago i heard a song that i fell in love with but never caught the
name or heard it again. i remember a lyric in it, "my name is jan the
gypsy," and how the song told a story of a couple other wanderers living
tough lives. do you have any idea what that song could be? for years now i
have looked using clues like vagabond, nomad, gypsy, but haven't had any
success.

thanks in advance for any help,
alvie hitesman

If you are interested, here are the lyrics

It Suits Me Well

(By Sandy Denny. U.F.O. Music, Inc. © 1972)

My name is Jan the gypsy
I travel the land.
There are no chains about me
I am me own man.
I can tell a fair old story which I'm sure ain't no surprise
Of the places I have been, oh,
And they ain't no lies.

I've never had a proper home,
Not one like yours is.
I've nearly always had a caravan
With 'orses.
And I know you won't believe me
Though it is the truth to tell
That the living it is hard, oh,
But it suits me well.

I am I traveller of the seas,
I am a sailor.
The ocean has been good to me,
She ain't no jailor.
I can tell a fair old story which I'm sure ain't no surprise
Of the places I have sailed, oh,
And they ain't no lies.

I've never had a garden,
Or a place with windows.
I stand upon the salty deck,
And feel the wind blow.
And I know you won't believe me
Though it is the truth to tell
That the living it is hard, oh,
But it suits me well.

My mother was a fireeater,
'Fore she desert us.
So when I was only severn years old
I joined the circus.
And I can tell a fair old story which I'm sure ain't no surprise
Of the places we have played, oh,
And it ain't no lies.

I've never had no money,
And no hope to get none.
I can always get a penny,
When there is good reason.
And I know you won't believe me
Though it is the truth to tell
That the living it is hard, oh,
But it suits me well.

The web site lists ten more of Denny's songs. It appears they are all avilable to download as ring tones. http://www.lyrics007.com/Denny%20Sandy%20L...l%20Lyrics.html

Hello, hopefully this is the right place for this. I also have a song I'm looking for. In the lyrics it says something like "I can't sing a killing song before I go to bed" I heard it on Celtic radio a couple of days ago. Any ideas? Thanks

It is called "Killing Song" by Russell Crowe and Alan Doyle. You can look it up under the request system here on the site.

Thank you very much. I'd never heard that quote by Lee either, it's great.
