Snows is coming down hard and fast here in Massachusetts. We might get over a foot possibly. Anyone else getting snow on the East Coast?

I might be home bound tommorow. Which will kinda be nice!

We got 8 inches today and are supposed to get 8 more tomorrow. This is my first snow storm. The only other time I saw snow was when I was 8 and we went skiing. I took a whole roll of pics to send to my family down south. I'm soooo excited.

By the way. Here in Western Ohio, we only got a skiff of snow. But the roads are a little slick. But not to bad.

Posted by: scottish2 06-Dec-2003, 05:40 AM
Yeah we got 100 inches of nothing down here in SC laugh.gif

Did have a little last winter in February and with it being as chilly as it is this winter already I am thinking that we might get a little more in Jan or Feb but it never amounts to anything or lasts long. sad.gif

Nothing yet from this storm here in Rochester. We do have some snow cover left over from an earlier storm. Fortunately, roads are clear and dry, as I am planning to go to an SCA Masked Ball in Buffalo today.

I'm jelouse! No snow of any significance here in Chicago. I am ready for it. I am all set up to work at home and my landlord gave us a garden tractor with a snow plow! YIPPPIEEEE Tell the neighbors to hide!

We have about 10 inches on the ground here in South Central PA. and the roads are cleared in the PA method ( plowed to a layer of slippery packed snow and ice ) so be carefull if traveling through here.

We have about 2 inches here in southern WV. A beautiful snow, the kind that clings to the trees and looks like a picture! biggrin.gif My hubby and I are going out on the ATV and take some pictures.

it snowed all day here yesterday (Indianapolis, IN) but nothing stuck.

I'm ready to break out the snow blower and was tempted to drive to Pittsburgh just to get it broke in for the winter. Besides that, it sounded like fun to bury Paula's neighbors cars wink.gif

Snow? No snow down here. Here it's sunny, clear, 52. Slight wind chill. I stll have the top down.

I would like to live somewhere that has four seasons. Here in San Antonio we like to say we have three seasons. January, February, and Summer.

Enjoy the white stuff.

We have about 10 inches here in NW New Jersey. Expecting about another 3-5 tonight.
As usual, I have to go replace the mailbox. sad.gif Snowplow didn't waste any time this year nailing the box. Last year he waited til the 3rd storm. Just one of the hazards of living in a rural area!!!

Gosh! I have been reading these posts about snow and now I'm all excited about it. tongue.gif Been running outside every so often to check and see if we might be getting any. So far nothing though, it's about 95F and sunny, but I'll be sure and let y'all know if we do get any. laugh.gif

I'll tell ya one thing though, it don't have to get very cold down here to freeze your coconuts. rolleyes.gif

Leo! Pretty funny! I can relate to you and Single speed. WE have January, February and summer here in Arizona. When it gets below 80, people have their jackets and sweat pants on! laugh.gif laugh.gif No snow for us and I am glad. Hate driving in the stuff!

We are now experiencing the height of the storm - according to the meterologist. I can tell you that it is brutal outside and visability is about across the street. We might be getting blizzard conditions and atleast 1 foot of snow tonight.

How I miss the dog days of summer..........

Well, we have almost 2 feet of snow and I had to walk this morning to get coffee because we ran out.

Here is the scene being played out: Neighbor thinks he can get his vehicle to the main road. Neighbor gets stuck in the road. Neighbor abandons car and goes home. BTW, Neighbor leave his hazard lights on just so that he has to get a jump too when his battery goes dead.

Posted by: snowblind 07-Dec-2003, 09:52 AM
No sign of snow in the highlands yet, just a bit of frost in the mornings. Last winter there wasn't any snowfall until January which was a shame, I'm hoping for it earlier this winter.
And happy 18th Annabelle.

Since I have Xmas week off, I may have to look into a plane ticket to Florida and rent a Harley for the week down there. No more snow!!!!!!!!

Hey, when I BUILD this house 3R, you can come stay with me. It's only about 20 minutes over to GrandFather mountain...So you know the area. That's great. Since John told me he won't move to Scotland, that area looks the most like it so he'll go there as long as I put in a fireplace.

We will be about 5 hours to Annapolis where most of our old friends live...really miss it there.

We've ended up with about 23-24" here I think. It's kinda hard to tell, 'cause the drifts are up around 3 1/2 - 4 feet!! Our girls were back out early today, and had a great time digging tunnels through those drifts, throwing snow at each other and the pup, going toboganning again, and general cavorting all around! I took some pics, and enjoyed watching all the proceedings from the warmth of the kitchen as I toodled around doing chores. Best news came this evening--No School tomorrow!!

what do you say that we both deserve it! Have you been to Scotland yet? I have never been, but my dream is to go in the next year or two. wink.gif

Posted by: Annabelle 08-Dec-2003, 08:17 AM
CelticRose I go over every other year to see my father's family. We are booked to leave in March of 2004 for about 12 days. We have specifically scheduled time to go up to the Northern part of the very top of Scotland. I wanted to go to Iona but we will have to see if the weather is friendly or not.

Also go over around May, June, July or Aug when it's warmer. If you want to go when things are a little cheaper go in March and April or Sept and Oct.

Make sure you give yourself a goal to go. Set a date like by the year 2008 or something like that to go...then set up a seperate savings account and start putting an extra $50 in there each month...before you know it you'll have it set aside. I will give you a little heads up. The UK is pretty expensive so save, save, save.

Start today girl! Think positive! by 2008 you go or whenever you set it !

Annabelle

Posted by: CelticRose 08-Dec-2003, 04:14 PM
Thanks Annabelle! I will do all those things. I had set a goal of going 2004, but then things changed and now my goal is 2005. Don't think I can wait till 2008! But whatever it takes! That's pretty neat that you not only get to go as often as you do but that you have family there to visit as well. I have heard our American dollar doesn't go very far over there. sad.gif

How are all you snow bunnies out there? It's a little chilly and windy here in the desert. I think we are in the lower 70's today! angel_not.gif

Posted by: Annabelle 08-Dec-2003, 04:18 PM
Celtic Rose, you live in the desert. Awesome! I love Death Valley. I love New Mexico and the desert out that way...most people don't realize how beautiful the desert is.
We spent Christmas of 1991 out in Death Valley. On Christmas Day we skated around the park in 40 degree weather. Had a blast! One of our most fun holidays out in the desert...I'm jealous you live out that way!

Annabelle
(green with envy)

Posted by: CelticRose 08-Dec-2003, 05:58 PM
Annabelle, well if you lived here right now you would be brown with envy. laugh.gif The desert isn't too pretty right now,but I still love it. People either really love the desert or hate it. There is no in-between. Here in Arizona, I think we have very beautiful desert. I am originally from California. I lived in Georgia for 14 years, North Carolina for 2, but here in Arizona for 8 and I love it here the best. However, each place has it's own beauty. wink.gif

Posted by: Annabelle 09-Dec-2003, 09:09 AM
You are soooooooooooooo right CelticRose! Most people either love of hate the desert... It's amazing the flowers that bloom out there. You have to take the time to do some hiking to see things. Can't get it in a car going down the Interstate.
Snow is my favorite thing! Every place I've lived in the world with the military has had it's own special beauty...
Be good and have a terrific day!

Yeah OR once you go from toboggon to tires....
Snow loses a bit of it's charm..

I don't get the driving in snow thing,
With few exceptions, Washington DC for example..
Most places that DO get snow, get it every year.......
Summer is NOT that long..
How can folks forget??
Or , run out for snowtires at the very last second?

I was in New Orleans when it snowed, if you call that snow, it was a dusting at best, the entire City, and its Goverment closed down..
My boyfriend at the time, worked on the otherside of the river, the Mississippi River bridge at just opened..
We had driven back down , from here to NO in a 66 Caddy with snowtires on it, studs in the rear..
I wanted to drive over and get him, as they had even closed the FERRY from crossing, I tried to explain to the Troopers, I was from PA and driving the LEAD SLED.. no go, they thought I was crazy to ever " be out in it " LOL..

It did look like hyperspace the other night smile.gif
Snowflakes were so big, and falling so fast..
I waited at work , till the traffic died down a bit..
makes it nice to have the road to yourself.

Snow, I'm not gonna complain, cause it just keeps comin anyway !

Paula

I don't understand the difficulty with driving in the snow either.... I do however have 2.5 million miles in a tractor/trailor in all kinds of weather including western mountains.

The first time I went down Cabbage (a pass in Oregon with 6% grades considered formidable for a TT in those days even on dry pavement) there was 6 inches of ice and I had to chain all of my tires. It went without a hitch I just kept my head screwed on tight wink.gif

In all of those miles I only felt like I really wanted to pull off the road twice because I did not feel safe and it just worked out that I had to go on because it seemed safer than trying to find the off ramps at any of the exits.

You want to see something that makes no sense check out drivers in LA when it rains tongue.gif

Arminta and I were in Spartenburg,SC probaly 12 years ago and they got 10 inches of snow and were shut down for a week.

I like to drive in snow and to be out in it for short periods of time, but it wreaks havoc on my joints when it is getting ready to snow.

Posted by: oldraven 09-Dec-2003, 11:28 AM
It's hard even getting snow tires. For a place that has so much snow for so long, you'd think everyone used winter tires. Nope, only us Newfies use Winter tires. (btw anything east of Quebec is Newfoundland to these flatlanders). And studs? Hah.

All Season my arse.

Raven,
I think you answered your own question thumbs_up.gif beer_mug.gif . . . my experience here in the snow belt (80-130 inches of snow/year) is that there are more a few people who don't keep their heads screwed on straight. A good example is the folks who who buy 4-wheel drive vehicles that get going real good but don't have enough sense to slow down in the curves, so turn over at the first slick corner on the freeway. I like to leave my car home, and walk or take the bus to work on the 1st good storm, while the Darwinian effect takes some of the more forgetful or less well mannered drivers out of circulation.

I agree Mail (and I know this may seem cold hearted) but I have thought that doing away with highway law enforcement would speed up the natural selection process and make the highways a safer place. (read my article a case for highway anarchy tongue.gif )

The down side is that a few of those who would normally survive might be sacrificed as a result (come to think of it I have seen that happen anyway)

Posted by: Eamon506 10-Dec-2003, 09:59 AM
I only got into Stan after his death. Then in October, I was tasked with writing a report on the accident. It was a strange coincidence, but I learned alot about the fire. It really brought home the senseless loss of a talented man. The accident was completely avoidable (in my view as an aviation analyst, at least). It was reported by several survivors that Stan was helping people to the exits to the end.

A brave man who is sorely missed. Good on Garrett for keeping the music alive!

Eamon

Posted by: oldraven 10-Dec-2003, 10:25 AM
I don't know much about the accident, because I was only a few years old at the time, and it's not talked about at all now.

Have you ever heard Garnett's song about two brothers, Frank & Johnny? I can never get through that song in one piece. As far as I knew, Garnett doesn't play any of Stan's stuff. He actually made it to this years Stanfest, in Canso. The first time since it's been up and running. I missed it this year though. sad.gif

Oh yeah, and ............uhm..............snow.

Posted by: Cailiosa 10-Dec-2003, 12:11 PM
Normally it hardly snows at all in Western Kentucky, but last winter it actually did snow. Now, I'm from Chicago, so to me it was a normal amount of snow, but to the natives it was probably the most snow they have ever seen in their lives. They canceled the local schools for almost 15 days I think (but they didn't close the University, of course) and everyone bought Walmart out of bread, milk, meat and tp, thinking they would get snowed in. And of course they didn't know how to drive . . . rolleyes.gif
Southern people definitely amuse me when it comes to snow (if they're not about to run me off the road tongue.gif )

I may have not got the snow like they did in the east a few days ago, but today we have received 6 inches of it and it is still snowing. They was telling us, on the weather, that we were suppose to get from 1-3 inches max. I do think they missed their mark a little.

IMHO, global warming has already changed the climate to a sufficient extent that the computer models used for weather forecasting no longer work very well.
Sending from a snowy Rochester, where we expect upwards of a foot or so of the fluffy white stuff (about 6 inches so far)

Now getting back to snow! Be careful with all of that Black Ice. We use to get alot of that over in Annapolis, Md. Made getting around difficult. My volvo wagon use to go thru it when other cars slipped on the ice. One time it took me 3 and a half hours to get home which was usually a 20 minute drive from Annapolis to Severna Park. Be careful out there fella!

Gosh you guys, looks like any chance for snow here is gone for good this year tongue.gif .

Its now been five days since we've had any rain and the wind has shifted to the north east. That means summertime. Blue skies, nice breeze off the Pacific, palm fronds rustling in the night, coconuts falling on people, you know, summertime stuff. So, I guess I will quit holding my breath for any snow in the tropics this year, that will definitely make it easier to stay concious at least. Nice 90F weather for the next five or six months. Soon of course, we will be gagging on the clouds of dust blowing off the parched earth, but for the present the prospect seems pretty pleasant.

Gozmoron, send it to me! It's been pretty cold here for an unusual winter but I'll take snow any day any time. I love it. Love to play in it. My favorite thing to do is get a trash bag, cut a hole for your arms and head. Cover your body with it. Then you get on the top of a high hill and slide down on your stomach holding your arms and legs bent upward. You look like a duck sliding down the hill, but everyone loves to do it. I laugh all the way down. The only negative is your stomache will be sore the next day cause you use muscles that you don't normally use. But great fun. Just look out for the trees.

Its been a week since we've had any rain, and there has been a nice northerly breeze every day now. Both good signs that summer has arrived. Temps have been in the upper 80sF (29C), the sky clear and blue with some fluffy clouds. What a disappointment huh? laugh.gif It does make the palm fronds wave nicely though. We got a hell of a lot of snow today. We live on a corner lot and have a recessed garage, so I had to do both sidewalks and the driveway. I am exhausted. I did dress for the occasion (big coat, layered clothing, gloves and a wool baseball hat), so I didn't lose anything to frostbite. I also took a break after shoveling the driveway. I went inside to sit down and have a cup of coffee. Also, I took my Walkman™ and listened to the Green Bay-Seattle game ( censored.gif Packers! I'm a Chicago Bears fan, so it is against my religion to be happy when the censored.gif Packers win) to help the time go by faster.

My friend Nathan, who came home for Christmas, was supposed to fly back to Virginia Beach today, but the plane that was supposed to take him to Baltimore was diverted to St. Louis, so he rescheduled his flight to tomorrow.

Derfel, Beautiful dog! I love dogs :-)

We got down the mountain only seeing 3 wrecks on the way. They closed the highway behind us as we came trough because of blowing and drifing snow. I'm ready for a beach. Our townhouse in the valley has snow stacked everywhere with nowhere else to put it. Sad. More snow due Tues. & Wed. I don't need a snow day from work right now. Oh Janey I'm glad you got down safely from the Mountain. Now I'd love the snow. You could leave me up there provided I had enough supplies, gas and diet coke. I'll sock in a couple dozen books and the world can go away for a month.
We have property up in NC outside of Boone that we are planning on building up there. I've been all weekend looking at blueprints trying to decide on what to build. I'll be stocked up so if I ever get that type of snow fall everyone can just leave me there.
I'll have back up generators, gas and Celtic Radio, what more do I need?

...Freak'in snow. I was caught totally unprepared for it this year. You see I moved away from the snow in the eastern Oregon high mountains down to the eastern Oregon desert at just over 200 feet elevation...
Any way , I had my motorcycle partly disassembled and was prepping it for new paint... Had tow go to work by the time I got home that night the temp dropped 30 degrees and my poor bike lay under 7 in. of powdery white...
On the other hand the town I moved away from La Grande , has gotten 30 in. as of 1 jan and it has snowed every day since, But since my son only had a yard sick to measure with I don't really know how much is in his yard , more that 36 in... So I guess I cant complain...

Hi Derfel, Just viewed the pic of the dog, looks like he is enjoying the weather, He looks a lot like my wee dug actually except Sandy (short for Alexander) is just that a sandy colour, and isn`t too happy at the moment with the heat here. sad.gif

I actually got him from an animal refuge, and was told he was probably a cross between a cocker spaniel and a retriever but don`t really know for sure, but he sure looks a lot like the dog in the picture. thumbsup.gif

anyway all the best to everyone, Elly thumbsup.gif

Bessi is a Muensterlaender, and she is already happy to be outside with me! biggrin.gif

Many greetings to Australia!

It is currently 4 degrees F with a light skiff of snow.

I did go on a Fox Hunt one time when it was -24 degrees F and a wind chill of -35 degrees F. We were out for one hour, jumped one fox and quit. No we did not get the fox either.

It snowed twice this week. brrrrrrr

And the temp dropped to -37*C (-34.6*F) and -48*C (-54.4*F) with the windchill.

brrrrrrrrrrrr

I think Annabelle would turn into a popsicle with temperatures like those. That is even cold in my standard. sad.gif

That would be an Annabellesicle. Picture a pretty blue color. laugh.gif

Come ahead, Annabelle! We have a generator there just in case, heated with propane gas stove so you won't freeze and the cooler is full of Diet Coke (is there any other kind of refreshment?). You could even have your own bedroom. thumbs_up.gif sleep1.gif

JaneyMae that sounds wonderful. Maisky put a sock in it! The girl has a plan of action that I would jump at the chance to enjoy. All I need is Maker's Mark Bourbon and Diet Coke. Can't live without my Diet Coke. I really don't need much food but I'll have a freezer full anyway like Cheesecake, shrimp, meatballs for sweet and sour, ice cream (my brother's favoirte (vanilla) and anything else we feel like. I've already got the books ready. I've finally got the bllueprints narrowed down to only about 40 so I'm getting there.

Annabellesickle is whole heartedly me. As long as there is snow I'm out in it.
We took our family up to Gatlinburg for Christmas about 6 years ago. It snowed and I was always outside in it. My hubby and his sister got annoyed that I wouldn't come in and cook. Told them "every person for themselves". Now I didn't desert them totally. They had a house full of food. Salads already made and lots of fresh veg's and desserts. God forbide they would have to turn on the stove. So I stayed out all day. My sister in law kept telling me I was to old to body ski and started nagging me. Well after sitting there enjoying a shot of MM I got back up and just walked outside and started sliding down the hill again head first with my slider. Oh yea! Great Fun!
Even if the temp is super low I bundle up cover my face and go for it. Growing up in Fla we never had snow (go figure) so I'm crazy (Literally) about the stuff. So are my kids. They can't get over how I can go down after them and beat them back to the top. Told them they should never grow up! It sucks being an adult. Stay a kid! More fun!
