I recently purchased the album "The Celtic Circle" and was very surprised to find the song "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan on it. Now don't get me wrong - I like Sarah as a pop singer - but Celtic? I don't think so. unsure.gif How about you?

I agree! As I said before, I do like Sarah's music, but Celtic she is not! But there she is on the album alongside Clannad, Máire Brennan, Nightnoise, Jeff Johnson, Brian Dunning, Karen Matheson, Anuna, Capercaillie, Mary McLaughlin, Alan Stivell, and all the others you'd expect to see on such an album! Makes no sense to me!

Is she doing a Celtic tune? Perhaps people just assume she's Celtic because she's from Halifax. unsure.gif

"Is she doing a Celtic tune?"

No. "Angel" IS a very lovely song. Its a slow, poignagnt, moving ballad, but Celtic? Not in my humble opinion.

"Perhaps people just assume she's Celtic because she's from Halifax."
I guess that's possible. Some of these record producers who don't know much about music sometimes just throw these collaborations together just to make a profit. Or as 3Ravens pointed out, "Well, she has a Celtic surname.....maybe that's all it takes?"

I don't know what the deal is here. but the album is put out by Windham Hill. You'd think THEY'D know better....

Now don't get me wrong. Sarah is not the only pop artist to appear on the album. Bono (of U2), Sinéad O'Connor, and the Corrs also appear on it. But Bono is singing as a guest artist with Clannad, Sinéad sings 2 songs with the Chieftains, and the Corrs - despite being pop artists - have a definite Celtic feel (especially in their early albums) with lots of fiddle, tin whistle, and bodhran. If they wanted to put a Sarah song on the album, they could at least have chosen "I Will Remember You" which was co-written with Seamus Eagan.

But then again Windham Hill put a Ricky Scaggs song (Christmas Time's a Comin')on their Celtic Christmas IV album. (I LOATHE bluegrass music, even if it is a distant Celtic cousin).

may I say about U2...
on their early time
Tomorrow (October)
Bad (The Unforgettable Fire)
both have Celtic feel, due to employing bagpipe
and...
Simple Minds: Street Fighting Years
it's definitely Celtic!
and more...
Gerry Rafferty: North and South
it's Celtic album too!

by my opinion
Sarah is not Celtic signer at all
Angel is good, but is not qualified as Celtic
if somebody thinks Sarah sings Celtic, then Dan Fogelberg is a Celtic signer too
