These are all wonderful! However, you might think about how much of Mac's begged, borrowed, and stolen bandwidth you are using. Any of you computer types know how much more bandwidth pics use? I would be glad to click a link if it keeps the forum from meltdown!
RWF, I love your drawings...but don't those poor girls ever get cold? wink.gif laugh.gif I really like how you made the centaur's face a meld between human and equine.
Rider, I already told you how much I like yours.
Oldraven, what kind of camera is that? I really want a digital, esp since I seem to have aquired some sorta digital processing when I got this comp! Any advice? Prob will be used mostly for fun...nature type pics and family pics. I would love to be able to do the type of closeups you do. I need an idiot-friendly cam tho.. wink.gif
Ask reek two questions for me about The Bridge Inn....who is living in the tree, and who is under the bridge? unsure.gif

Fantastic artwork! Wow! I really enjoyed the gallery here. Umm....I am an artist too. Can anybody post their artwork here? I don't want to intrude if it was just limited to Angel, Raven Whitefang and Old Raven. I work in colored pencil and some oils. I do Native American portraits or did. Would love to get into fantasy art next though.

Any and every one can post here. I figure after a few weeks I will remove the current pics so we can start again. A better thought is to have a contest and aquire votes on best Pics then leave those that win on here. That might help lesson the stress.

I have also taken the liberity to shrink some of these pictures. I hope no one minds. I am just trying to be helpful.

Mac has already cut the limit on attached pics once because of bandwidth issues. I'm seeing most of these pics ranging between 1-200 KB a piece, now browsers today tend to cache such things so that they don't have to be DL'd anew and I'm sure that helps. Let's figure on some guestimates here

At the time I write this, I see a count of 289 views of this thread
approximately 26 pics that are 25-75 KB
9 that are over that, some of these up to over 300 KB

if we say that the average on the small pics is 50 KB and the average on the large pics is 150 KB, then the 26 amsll pics comes out to 1300 KB or a little over 1 MB
add to that 9 pics at 150 KB each... for approximately the same number, 1350 KB, so a little over 2.5 MB of image data being pulled from Mac's server per viewing, that comes to 722 MB of his bandwidth used just by the images on this thread. Now there are errors in these numbers, and the thread probably has not used near that. This can be attributed to cacheing, and to the fact that many of the images were not there when a lot of the hits took place. In any case, it's approacing having used enough bandwidth to have transferred a complete CD-ROM just for this thread. I rather think it would be better to put an HTML image link in the post and host the image elsewhere. I will test this for feesability in a new thread in tech support here in just a minute and see how well the forum handles it.

Posted by: Angel Whitefang (Rider) 12-Nov-2003, 11:44 PM
OK everyone,
Mac says that the bandwidth can handle what we post so no worries smile.gif
apparentlt they go in every so often and compress the files so everything runs smoothly, Please returnyour pics to a fairly nice size so I don't have to squint to see them.

One of these days I am going to et my photos developed. Most of my artwork was stolen, and I have had a very long bout of artist's block so I haven't been able to do much to replenish my collection.

I am working on something for barddas, (if I ever get it done. Sorry Jason)

So, as soon as I get my photos developed, I will post my latest peice that is hanging in my boss' office, and I will post some pics of the flutes my father in law made for me and my husband. his carvings are awesome. He even made a flute out of sandstone. \

BTW - I love the dragon.

Posted by: oldraven 13-Nov-2003, 02:25 PM
RavenWing, this is the only carving I've done. I made it for my father for Christmas last year, and he hung it over the fireplace.

It's the Reeves Coat of Arms. A great excuse for buying a dremel. wink.gif

Posted by: RavenWing 13-Nov-2003, 02:29 PM
a dremel is one of the best tools I have seen in along time.

Wow! All this beautiful artwork I am seeing is really inspiring me to get back on the horse and start doing artwork again. I have taken a break from it for over a year with the economy being bad and lack of sales, I got discouraged. But then we do it for the enjoyment of it, don't we? Or should!

Thank you Angel, Raven, OldRaven, and Ravenwing. And Raven, your artwork is beautiful. You have a different style than me. I could not do what you do. Love your photography, Old Raven! Photography was always my first love. Your photos are awesome. thumbs_up.gif

Here is a couple more pieces of mine. This first one was done in just pencil.

I do carving as a hobby just so my eyes can focus on something larger than I usually work with. I tend to use hand tools for the most part but will end up using a power tool for final clean up. I am building a lap dulcimer right now but have hit a bit of a block. I'm trying to figure out what I will carve into it. When and if it is ever finished, I will post pictures. I have had a set of deer antlers hanging in my workshop for years now which I have been planning on doing a mixture of carving and metal (silver and/or gold) fittings but again, the mood has to hit.

Here is the second carving that I did. I decided to try something a bit difficult as a measurement of whether or not I should keep my day job or if there was some hope for me.

Posted by: CelticRose 13-Nov-2003, 10:52 PM
Keltic -- absolutely beautiful! I asked this before on another thread, but do you do jewelry too? I would like to see that posted too, if I may be so bold as to suggest that since I am new here. unsure.gif

Posted by: myriad 14-Nov-2003, 08:55 AM
Keltic if you haven't already I think you can scratch the day job. That is great work.
desertrose... Did you have subjects? Either way... your works are beautiful. I am Cherokee and Irish and am so pleased to see such beautiful works of Native Americans.

Posted by: Keltic 14-Nov-2003, 01:03 PM
Thanks for the comments on my carving. If I ever get around to finishing the others, I'll make sure to post them.

My work can be found at my site - http://www.kelticnations.com

Keltic! What truly awesome metalwork!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I loved everything I saw! You are a truly talented artist in more ways than one! I own a na mara ring but never knew what it was called until now. Thanks so much for sharing. I take it you are in Canda. Do you have your own shop or do you do the festivals and the internet only?

OldRaven -- I forgot to mention that the pic of Jasper Park Lodge is awesome! So very beautiful photography, such a beautiful place. Is that in Canada? Whereever it is, I am moving there! biggrin.gif

"Na Mara" is what we call it. This pattern is actually from the Book of Kells and instead of calling it "the ring with the pattern from the Book of Kells", we decided to simplify things. We have seen this design done by others and they would more than likely have a different name to identify the pattern.

We are in Canada and we do a few festivals and work over the internet.

Keltic, I love your sense of humor! I laughed what you said here and what you had said in the romance book forum when you said you would have had to take a taxi to get to the end of the Diana Gabaldon line! laugh.gif Did you happen to see the supposed "Claire ring" that I posted for you in that thread?

Anyway, I love the title of the ring, Na Mara. And more so I love your work. I was also impressed with the fact that you made Luckenbooth earrings. I wear a pair of Luckenbooth (with a thistle inside) all the time in my ears. Most people do not even know what a Luckenbooth is, so I was thrilled to see yours! smile.gif

Posted by: Keltic 15-Nov-2003, 11:04 PM
Desertrose,

I saw the ring but it is hard to make out the detail. I now know that it does exist!!

I didn't make the earrings but I'm in the process of designing some. We bring those in from Scotland but are phasing them out. We were surprised when we brought the luckenbooth earrings in as to how many people had no idea what it was.

Posted by: Annabelle 16-Nov-2003, 05:46 PM
DesertRose, Keltic's work is extremely nice...I have one of his rings on right now and I love it...it's got a great weight to it. The knotwork is clean and smooth, not raggedy like some are...you can tell he takes alot of pride in his work...I've got to get him busy to make another for Christmas if I'm not too late already...

Posted by: CelticRose 16-Nov-2003, 07:16 PM
Keltic -- so those Luckenbooth earrings are from Scotland? Wow! I too was amazed as to how many people do not even know what they are. When I attend Scottish festivals, I never see any so I was very pleasantly surprised to see you carried them. Even more glad to hear that you are making some. I can't wait to see them.

Yeah, you're right. It is very difficult to see the detail of the "Claire ring" but like you said. We both know there is one that exists. Actually, I know of some other people who are going to sell theirs as well.

Annabelle -- you have one of Keltic's rings? I would love some of his jewelry too, but have to wait till after Christmas. I have already shopped for me for my hubby! unsure.gif That might be kind of pushing it. Anyway, I could really see by the quality of his work that it is outstanding and work that I want to have in my hands as well. I am always looking out for good Celtic jewelry. I have a ton of it already, but there is never enough, in my opinion! rolleyes.gif smile.gif

All I can say is WOW and now I'm gonna say it backwards WOW! I'm flippin over this amazing art work.

I started on page one a little bit ago and I saw covers for sci fi novels ala Michael Moorcock, Ursela K Leguin, fantasy novels like the Dragon Lance series and I can't remember which Weis book it was but I saw a picture of the sundered worlds. Very hip. Thanks for incouraging me to stop here Angel.

Angel, Raven Whitefang, Keltic, Desert Rose, Old Raven, Myriad ( I hope I didn't miss anyone) all great stuff in it's own right (or is it rite?) regardless very impressive, very awe inspiring I really enjoyed this journey.

Peace to all

I am really impressed with everyone's work here.

I have missed a couple days looking here and was amazed to see how much I had missed. I guess this wil have to be one of my daily stops.

Yes Angel, I haven't seen your work posted here in a while either. But being artistic, you would want it to be the best you could.

Desertrose, I loved the curious puppy. It looks at you as saying "WHAT?"

All the work if Fantastic. Keep them coming thumbs_up.gif

Nice, Angel. That stuff is wild. laugh.gif

Desertrose, not even close. I only take pictures for myself. It's a hobby. Got tinkering with the Nikon digital from work, and it snowballed from there. Now I can't take a picture unless it takes a good five minutes to setup. tongue.gif I've never tried entering contests or exibits, because I'm just nowhere near that level yet. I know the basics, and have an eye for framing, but there's so much to learn before you can become a pro.

Thanks for the boost in confidence though. hug.gif

Angel! Love the red sunset. You are so creative. You must have quiet an imagination!

OldRaven -- What????????????? You have never entered a contest or sold your work? Now, this is a hint! Get your work out there. I have done many art shows for many years and I have seen a lot of good photography, but yours surpasses a lot of what I have seen!.....really! This isn't BS I am giving here. Get your work out and let others enjoy it as well. I am sure you will reap many benefits once you do. thumbs_up.gif

WEll you know OldRaven? To be honest with you, I have done the business part of my art and it really took the enjoyment out of it. It was very hard work, a lot of time spent in marketing and selling yourself. Very draining. Probably why I am so burned out in my artwork today and have been for a year! So what I am saying is that you are better off doing what you love most and enjoying the hobby part of it. Cause once you try to make it into a business, the enjoyment really goes out of it. So just keep sharing it with us here so we can all drool with pleasure!

Posted by: CelticRose 24-Nov-2003, 05:31 PM
Absolutely awesome, OldRaven! It is so very beautiful work. Thanks for sharing. Photography was always my first love and I appreciate the work involved in it. I still do it and still use my old Canon AE1. Can you believe that? But it works just as good today as it did the first day I bought it -- what 30 years ago now? laugh.gif

Also, my username got changed to CelticRose, but I am still the same person! wink.gif

Nice looking camera, OldRaven! The thing I like about the old cameras is that they are practically indestructable. I mean, my Canon SLR has been dropped I don't know how many times and it just keeps on going and going.... thumbs_up.gif

haven't invested in a digital.....yet. But hope to one day. The one I want is very expensive.

Well, I started off with the exact same camera. Angela got one at a flea market and we used it for two years before it started leaking light. Then I used kodak disposable cameras, because I had no choice. Then I started borrowing the comany (ex-company) digital camera every once in a while. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikoncp995/ A really nice camera, and quite user friendly. Got me interested enough to actually learn some things and try harder to get quality photos. Then I learned of the downsides of digital photography, and so got the one pictured above. I use fixed 28:1 and 50:1 lenses though I would really love to get myself a nice 200x+ zoom.
I took it home with me and, with the aide of my Dad's tripod, I got some great shots of back east. But I have no access to a scanner, and so I'm stuck with no way to sahre them. If you liked any of these, you'd melt if you saw the shots I took around Cape Breton. I took five rools in those two weeks.
No, I do nothing professional. Mainly because I'm not a professional. wink.gif

Rosemary,

That drawing of Geronimo is amazing. I see my grandfather's face in his, under the cheeks and around the mouth sucked in with age. I love the way the eyes aren?t the symmetrical, few people?s are.
There is a feeling of wearied dignity about this piece.

Angel,

I love tree hunt. I see the dark marks in the snow and think it?s probably melt marks, but I see them as footie prints from all the searchers.

oldraven,

I really love your close-up photos. You posted one somewhere else that was a branch, pendulant with red berries, lit from behind by autumn leaves. Did you repost that here?

I did not know you worked at Merle.. fun fun !

I work a few days in a Salon, and a few in an Enhanced Images ..
Keeps things interesting ! thats for sure ..

I am glad you think its art.. I don't like to say that,
but I sure am glad to hear you think so !

Oh Paula! I know that it is art. I paint portaits on canvas and paper, but whenever I was doing makeup at Merle Norman, I always felt like the person's face was just another canvas. So you are definitely an artist! And I want to see more faces you have done! I subscribe to all these beauty magazines just so I can look at all the makeup done on them. It is a real artform and you have to be very creative and know color very well. I was deeply upset with Kevin Aucoin died. I thought he was a genius! I have several of his books. Show me more!

Funny, here we spell esthetician with an a in front. Wonder why that is? It costs about $10,000 to go to school for that here, which is why I have put it off. sad.gif

Posted by: Arianrhod 07-Dec-2003, 01:16 AM
But Rose,
I can't draw or paint on canvas or paper to save my life!
you can do all of that , and more !

I had to get my Beauty Lisc too, here in PA , when I went to school,
you could not touch anyone in a shop with out one,, period..
Now they break them down.

As for the spelling...I really don't know,, My CIDESCO cert is spelled
with an A ... the line I use at the Salon spells it with out it...
The peel at the Enhanced Images place , it has an A... LOL
its anyones guess...

I will beat my scanner in to submission ,, and find some stuff to post for you..
If not Ill take them to Kinkos and try them on a disk, I need to do that anyway ..

Thanks again Rose !
you are such a dear...

I thought the make up looked great Paula (I'm color blind so I don't know what awful pink stuff you are talking about tongue.gif )

Rose - Arminta and I are playing a show as a duet next week and once again I found myself without any duet photos rolleyes.gif

So I took about 2 hours yesterday afternoon to make one. I did a couple of things to make the edit look believable. I cut and pasted sections of the wall in different places and then made them semi tranparent so that I could see myself and Arminta behind them.

I made all of the cut at mortar lines and then blurred them where they connected until I could not tell myself where the line had been. I used the clone feature (Photo Shop 7) in a couple of smaller places. When the perspective changed I used the skew feature to change the angles on the brick lines and resized the bricks appropriately.

finally I flattened the whole mess and used the blur tool to blend in our body outlines with the new wall.

Thanks for the flowers Keltic biggrin.gif

Peace to all

Mikel

BTW I'm almost to 200 and trying to think of a really cool title tongue.gif

Posted by: CelticRose 07-Dec-2003, 06:56 PM
Paula! It doesn't matter if you can paint or draw on paper or linen canvas. You can paint on another canvas ......skin! And from what little I saw, I can see you do it well. Do you have a porfolio? I was working on one. Merle Norman changed their policy here that no one could touch another person without a beauty liscense; hence, there went my job. I was stuck cleaning the store, selling cosmetics, which I loved, but the cleaning of the store every day killed my back, so I had to quit. Anyway, it is getting that way here too that you cannot do makeup on anyone without a license. But I don't have $10,000 right now and with a bad back, I kind of gave up the dream. sad.gif

Mike! Thanks for taking the time to explain to me the process you went through to do your photo project. It is just too cool. I really love it.

I see you're almost at 200 posts and I am sure you will come up with a great title. I finally changed my title -- Paula will know about this one wink.gif --- it is a place in Scotland (probably fictitious) that is in the series of Scottish romance books we are both reading. I am also a member of the a such called group that is taken from the books. Oh! Fun and fantasy ! I do indeed love it! smile.gif

Rose ,
You are, as ever kind .Thank you..

I do have a portfolio..you almost have to .. about ten years ago,
I started to put most of it on video.. beats sleping around a book
full of tear sheets and comps...
See here , in PA you could work at a Dept Store, or a place like Sephora.
As long as it isnt a Salon, the Board rules do not apply...
Makes it dicey here for Spa workers..most are not trained .
Don't give up dreams Rose .. we have to talk about other avenues you
could try, such as your local film board !

I did a little research, and found out why the different spellings,
First of , its a study from Europe.. then there is the study of,
and the application of the study .. so there! another mystery solved.

Rave.. ty ty ! I would love to be able to do that with some pics I have !
Is it very hard to do ? AH ha I just read 2 hours ...
I figured it had to be fairly intense... great job !!!!!!

I love your new Title Rose!
You West facing Tower YOU ! lol

Have a great day, all you very artist Celtic Hearts !

Paula!

You are a make-up artist. You might be able to make even me beautiful, or beautiful enough to elicit from my husband a response beyond - good, fine or nice. I'm coming right over. biggrin.gif Brew the tea, I'll be there in 2 hours. laugh.gif

Seriously, it most certianly is art and you are an artist.

Hey, Rose,
I recognised the place of your title as well. biggrin.gif
And if you have the desire to do creative make-up, most community theaters are dying for volunteers to do make-up, sets, anything. You would be an amazing addition to any theater.

Elspeth

Posted by: Arianrhod 08-Dec-2003, 12:00 PM
Elspeth ..
Mother Nature made you beautful...... inside and out !

NARS and MAC can only take care of the outside..
and that part is easy ..
I've seen your pic..and I won't blather on about how pretty you are..
There will be no dealing with you then ! tongue.gif

I think most everyone looks better with a lil touch here and there..
I'd be happy to glam you up a bit.. and I won't make you look like a tart,,
I promise ! gah I hate that...

Kettle is on too !

Rose , that was a great idea from Elspeth..
they would keep her buzy night and day!

So Paula and Elspeth, you recognized where I got my title, eh? wink.gif thought you both would! I actually belong to the Arizona Ladies of Lallybroch, so I thought appropriate. biggrin.gif

That is a great idea about the theatre. I live in a small town so not sure how active our theatre is, but it is something to check into. I was going to go work at the department stores and do the over-the-counter thing, but my back just will not tolerate me standing on my feet for very long anymore. Besides, I live an hour from the nearest mall! The only thing they have here in my town is the Merle Norman salon I worked at and Super Wal-Mart laugh.gif

Paula are you familiar with Paula Begoun? I have several of her books. Thanks for doing the research on the a or esthetician title! Interesting, eh?

Ooh, show off time. rolleyes.gif Here is one of my painting of buffalo Indian dancers. I photographed these guys in New Mexico and did the painting from that.

Posted by: Elspeth 08-Dec-2003, 04:55 PM
That picture is so cool Rose.
Especially since I just finished reading a book - The Children of First Man where some of the characters wore the buffalo headdresses. Gave me a visual of what I just read. smile.gif

Rosemary ..
Yes I keep" Green eyeshadow should be Outlawed", and" Don't go to the Cosmetics counter with out me" in my desk at work..
I find her well informed and halarious !

Plus I need the back up when I tell someone that Lancome and Lorelle are the same thing... women love to spend more money than they have to, on some make up....

As for Theater.. there may be some dinner theater your not even aware of..
I was stunned when I saw as many as I did in my own home town !

You got me thinking about the spelling Rosemary, I called a friend of mine , from CEDISCO , she cleared it up for me smile.gif

Here are a couple of other examples of my photo editing. This first is the very first Album cover that I ever designed

Posted by: CelticRose 08-Dec-2003, 09:03 PM
Elspeth! Thank you. I am glad to have been of service! wink.gif

Paula! I have several of her P. Begoun's books and find her so amazingly knowledgeable and hilarious too. She was on television a few weeks ago and I was like so excited! I know what you mean about products being made from the same company. And one time I did something really bad. I had this customer who was complaining about the price of Merle Norman's moisturizer with retinol in it. So I told her to go get the Neutrogena Healthy Skin with retinal and that it did the same thing for 1/3 of the price! Aren't I bad? Probably why I got reduced to cleaning the salon! laugh.gif I just can't see spending that much money on make-up when the cheaper versions do the same thing! I don't know, may La Mer is worth it! rolleyes.gif biggrin.gif

Posted by: CelticRose 08-Dec-2003, 09:05 PM
Raven! That is phenomenal! I love it! I always thought I would have liked to do album covers way back when. Are you still doing them?

Posted by: Raven 08-Dec-2003, 09:46 PM
Hi Rose

Thank you for the nice words. I didn't coment on your last peice but I have loved everything that you have posted the artistry is great and the style is simply a comfort to me. I love it. I have always loved the Southwest and may end up living their again if the proper events transpire.

I am and I'm not.

This is the second one that I did for our Still Waters CD. I took this picture from interstate 80 in California in the Sierra Nevadas. I believe it is was Donner Lake before I manipulated it. biggrin.gif I'm going to post the inside just because I was real proud of being able to show a reflection of the "Orb of Lily" in the lake water.

I have a good friend who also does graphic design and was Arminta and my room mate for about a year that never seems to like my work (that is just his way and I love him in spite of that tongue.gif ) But he designed our Dream Walk CD and I have to admit that it is much different and better than I would have done myself.

Our next CD we are trying to make look more representative of the Celtic in what we do so I am debating whether to let him do another (he doesn't like time tables that's how I ended up doing the Still Waters Cover rolleyes.gif ) but he wants to do the next one and he really does like to help us. I've always been suspicious that this is why he is so critical of my artwork smile.gif plus it helps to keep me humble.

I enjoy creating visual art even if I am only manipulating photos for the most part. When I get a good Digital camera I will probably do a lot more on the photography end. I have taken 1000's of shots with my 35 mil in the past and really enjoy creative photography. (my wife helps out with color balance as I am terribly color blind) The print is a little funky on these and not as it actually appeared on our CD. I just realized this and am going to have to make sure I fix that in the near future as we sold that entire run are going to have to print them ourselves but you can get the idea smile.gif

I thought I was just weird for a long time and then I discovered that I am artistic in addition biggrin.gif

Mikel

Posted by: Raven 08-Dec-2003, 09:52 PM
Here is the back cover. I forgot to mention that my freind Nancy did the band member photos and my friend Ray who I mentioned before designed the Orb of Lily of which I am now the keeper

Also I wanted to mention that if you still want to do an album cover Rose it is not to late. In fact there is more opportunity for this than ever and you certainly have the skills. Much more so than myself. I see your work as much more inviting than my own which seems to come out cold and dark in most cases.

Peace

Mikel

Posted by: CelticRose 08-Dec-2003, 10:13 PM
Mike! Thanks for sharing! Very very beautiful work. You say you are "just manipulating photos" but that requires artistic creativity too. Very nice work. I can relate to the criticism of artwork. My hubby is very critical of mine. If he doesn't like something he will outright say it! Hurts sometiimes but he keeps me humble too. He is not an artist but an avid art lover and collects art himself, so he has a strong opinion of what he likes! tongue.gif biggrin.gif

Well I did some album covers in art school, but they were just for assignments. However, I got to thinking. I did do an album cover for a Native American flute player about 10 years ago. It was a portrait of him playing the flute. He kept the original painting for himself, after paying me of course! wink.gif But that is the only one I have done. Was neat to see my name on there though. Thanks again, Mike!

Very beautiful oldraven. I liked it alot. Reminded me of the old unique ornaments we had when I was young.

Posted by: oldraven 09-Dec-2003, 10:02 PM
Thank you, good ladies. smile.gif

I know what you mean Elspeth. My mother always had these ancheint bulbs that she's had since she was a kid, and no one made them for ages. Last year was Angela and my first Christmas in our house, so we got to get a tree finally. Spent a lot of cash on Christmas decorations, but it's all good. Anyway, while checking out the offerings at WalMart, we found a whole wall of these things. All different colours and designs, but those classic bulbs just the same. They even had the long icicle ones made of glass.

I was quite excited.

Posted by: CelticRose 09-Dec-2003, 10:18 PM
I bet that was exciting oldraven. Haven't seen those long icycle ones in years! My gosh you even have a Wal-Mart up there in Nova Scotia? That store has made its rounds! One of my neices works for the BIG Wal-mart office in Arkansas.

My tree is mostly decorated with ornaments that friends and family have made for me over the years. That has been very special too. smile.gif

Posted by: oldraven 10-Dec-2003, 09:05 AM
Damn. We've got Wal-Marts all over this country. One or two in every town, and about six in Edmonton. They're like a disease. Spreading as fast as MacDonalds.

Ikea, that is the way of the future. tongue.gif

nice work Rider. The trees on the second one are wacked out. I could spend all day under a tree like that. Reminds me of Xanth though, so bad things have probably set up camp under there already.

OK, here is the last one that I'll put up today. Its another "mixed medium" piece of mine. I've used these two people in other artwork of mine, but this is a good display of them alone.

Hope ya'll enjoy!

Angel -- what can I say? Your work is so phenomenally good! I get excited everytime you post a new piece of your work! So are those the two you are wanting titles for? I love your use of color!

Danann -- OMG! I love your work! Is your work computer generated too? Sorry, I am so ignorant when it comes to these new mediums nowadays. I just still work in the old way, pencil drawing and oils, so I am not up to date on the new mediums now. And you are very good with the camera! Don't know yourself down! Thank you so much for sharing. It is great to see all these wonderful pieces of artwork on here and in so many different aspects and genres.

oldraven, yeah Wal-mart is like a maddening disease all over the place. I hate to hear that one day they are in the UK too! Or are t hey already t here? unsure.gif However, I happen to love them! I live in a small town and that is the biggest thing going around here! biggrin.gif

Sgean dubh would be pronunced like this I believe Ski-an Du. Your are right dubh does mean black and sgean actually means blade, so you have a "black handled knife" but today they have been transformed into a lot of different handle styles frome the "Traditional" black handle to the fancy Dress handles like this one with stag horn, this would be worn for Highland Dress occasions, like formal balls and Robert Burns Suppers. smile.gif

I guess it's pretty safe to say she wont be seeing this, so here goes.

I'm rebuilding an old Fender Acoustic for her. She's a lefty and refuses to learn right handed. The only option is for her to get her own, because restringin mine would be pointless. She'd have a guitar and I wouldn't. But I know she'd never buy one for herself, so that's where this comes in.

I have to strip it and put a new clear coat on it anyway, so I was going to paint some designs on it first, to make it more personalized.

This is for the flat-top, and depending on how much time I have, perhaps the back as well.

Yes, I drew that up in autocad this morning.

Oh wow! Cool oldraven! Is this for Christmas? She is going to love it! What kind of paint are you going to use? Take a pic of the final project and show us. Pretty cool you are doing all that yourself. thumbs_up.gif

Well, it's looking closer to 10" wide, and we'll see if I can pull this off in less than a week. If not, there'll be Christmas Eve shopping.

Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain were both lefties, and I think Jimi always just played a regular guitar upside down didn't he? He refused to learn right-handed too... heard a story once from Eric Clapton where he said he'd bought a left-handed Strat for Jimi and was going to give it to him, but he died before they got together.

How wonderful of you to rebuild a guitar as a gift! I don't play, but I have received more blessings from listening than I ever expected. I like it that you are encouraging this person in what they do...

Posted by: oldraven 19-Dec-2003, 02:31 PM
Thanks Blues. And yes, I knew that about Jimi. Upside down pearl white strat. smile.gif

Posted by: Siusaidh Blues 26-Dec-2003, 02:05 PM
I sure wish Jimi had lived longer... I wonder what he would be playing like right now, if he was still around. Eric has evolved and changed his style, but he's still ole Slowhand when you get down to it. I saw him in concert in 2001 and was astonished again at his sheer skill. Stevie Ray Vaughan changed too, once he got clean and sober, and was playing some of the most powerful stuff of his entire life right before he died.

I bet Jimi would still be playing cutting-edge stuff, pushing the boundaries and setting standards few could follow... note.gif

Posted by: oldraven 29-Dec-2003, 11:31 AM
Yeah, that's a cool thought. But if he didn't die that day, he would have ODed the day after anyway. There wasn't much hope for the man.

Posted by: Siusaidh Blues 29-Dec-2003, 02:31 PM
You're right - Jimi was doomed, almost self-destructive I think whether he intended to be or not.

Haldur gave me clearance to post this once I got it scanned, which finally happened. I've had this image in my head for nearly 2 years now, and he was finally able to help me see it on paper. Thank you, to my friend =)

There are two differances between my vision and this work

1) the pond is black as the night sky all the way in... a starfield.
2) the animals drinking are greyish in color

Don't ask me what manner of creatures they are. as portrayed in Haldur's image is about as clear as I have ever seen them in my head. Thanks again, my friend.

There are some incredible works here. Very, very talented people. I know I am not up to the caliber of what I see, but I thought I would add a couple of items anyway. Besides it adds to my post count wink.gif .

The first picture I took this past summer. A friend and I spent a week in this canyon living in a caboose.

Great photos gettin-away! Thanks for sharing! Where is that canyon, btw?

Posted by: gettin-away 19-Jan-2004, 09:11 PM
Thank you CelticRose.

This is Agawa Canyon. It's 114 miles by train (not as straight as the crow flies) north of Saute Ste Marie, Ontario in Canada. The canyon is about 15 miles east of Lake Superior. The caboose we stayed in was pulled up by the train and is left on a side track in the canyon. It's hidden by the trees in the picture. As we hiked up and down the tracks we found many signs of the local critters. Bear, moose and wolf. We were fortunate enough to see a bear about fifty feet from us. He wasn't to sure about us and turned tail and ran.

This picture is about four miles north of the canyon. Just around the bend it opened up into a wide open space. As we walked into this area Golden Eagles flew above our heads.

Ooh! That's a beauty too! No wonder I have never heard of the canyon. I have never been to Canada! I live in Arizona. You know what canyon we have there! wink.gif Been there?

It's on my to go to list...and won't it be GRAND biggrin.gif.

I've made as far west as the Badlands and I almost got a job on Kodiak Island in Alaska though I have yet to see it. My trips of late have been north into Canada. Found a small French-Canadian town that I fell in love with. Beautiful country, beautiful people......kayaking, camping, hiking......and the scenery photo.gif .

Anyway that's way off topic. Thank's for the kind words. I have a few other things to share, but not tonight. Gotta work in the morning.

CR, there are like 28 pages now on this thread! I confess I haven't look at every single post yet - wub.gif and have only viewed some of the artwork. That's why I haven't posted more of my own.

But since you mentioned it, here's a new one of trumpet player Clifford Brown; a local theater (Theater on the Square, Marietta) asked me to create a design for the playbill for "Sideman" which just opened there. They changed the image around a lot to suit the playbill, which didn't thrill me but is okay I suppose. This is the original:

Hi Angel! That is terrific news about Jay! Oh, you must feel so much better just knowing that! Keep us posted! Working on a complicated piece, eh? I know how those can be. I am sure it will be spectacular as usual! I can't wait to see it. I am slowly working on a colored pencil portrait right now. Colored pencil, as much as I love the medium, can take so much time because of all the layering.

A computer friend of mine is going to give me his Photo Print Shop software! Wow! I was shocked. So I will have fun playing around with that, if I can learn in it! unsure.gif

You take care Angel and don't work too hard! wink.gif smile.gif

Angel, I didn't mean to overreact but ya'll scared me for a minute - but I see that you two are just kidding around now.

Celticrose, you wouldn't believe how different the playbill looks from the original... the theater company was actually worried that an ad featuring an African-American would not appeal to their white middle-class theater goers, so they first asked me to do another drawing!! I was stunned, to put it mildly, that they even SAW color as an issue!! I got very angry with them and told them that jazz transcends color & that what I drew captured the feeling of both the play and Clifford Browns music and that I wasn't about to do another drawing. The next day they called back all sweet and apologetic-sounding, and said that they would use what I'd given them. But look at what they did to it:

Posted by: CelticRose 29-Jan-2004, 01:19 PM
Oh my, Siusaidh! I am sorry to say but that is awful what they did to your piece! sad.gif I would be horrified! But at least your work is on there for many people to see and you hopefully got credit for having done the work.

Shah! They fussed over having a black man on the cover of a playbill? What ignorants they are for that and I am glad you gave them a piece of your mind. Can't believe people still feel that way.

I still have to scan more of my work and get it on here, but I noticed that nobody else has. Where you artists all at anyway? angel_not.gif I don't want to hog the thread here with my stuff, you know! tongue.gif

Relax dear

In THIS forum we are all relaxed and calm. If there is ever a problem then people come to me and tell me about it. I don't rule with an Iron fist but I make it known what is and isn't tolerable. You will find that all of the artists here are not in to arguing or people bashing of any kind.

as for what they did to your art work, I am totally appalled!!!!!! If that was how they wanted it they never should have contacted you at all. I hope you made them pay handsomely for the original!

Your work is fantastic and they had no right to try and hide it!

Posted by: Siusaidh Blues 30-Jan-2004, 11:16 AM
Well, this is one of those situations where I know now I should have not gotten involved with that theater... they first approached me about donating a piece, saying that the art would be used for the playbill then auctioned at a fund-raising party at the end of the year. I guess they caught me in a weak moment, because I heard myself agree over the phone! Shoulda known better...

Now I have donated artwork to worthy causes over the years and I didn't mind doing this original to donate to the theater, because it is nice publicity and gets my work in front of a lot of people when its used on the playbill - but then they have the nerve to call me back after I delivered it and say they'd like to see something else a little less 'black'! They not only rejected the piece that the director of the play had told me was a good idea, but they thought I was going to spend even more time doing a drawing I wasn't going to make a cent off of! Nah, babe, I don't think so...

laugh.gif
That got my 'righteous indignation' all stirred up!! It'll be a long time before I donate again!

Posted by: Angel Whitefang (Rider) 30-Jan-2004, 12:13 PM
SB,
If I may give you a suggestion, and I hope I don't over step my bounds here but, I would not stop donating, just do a thurough background check on these people.
Ask for their creidentials and Refereances. Don't be afraid to ask for these things, You have the right to know who you are dealing with. Don't answer right away, always tell them you will think about it first. I have recently been asked to make an album cover for a friend of mine, I have agreed to do it but only because I KNOW this person. They will pay me for the art work that I do , wether or not they choose to use it. It is taking time and work to do this and they understand this. My time is worth Money as is yours. This is just my 2 cents worth. Hope I did not Offend.

Very good advice, and no I'm not offended! You are absolutely right. In this case, the theater is a well-established one, and I was contacted by them from a referral from an art gallery in Marietta that used to sell my originals. I think they are reputable, I just didn't expect them to be so stupid as to expect me to spend so much more time trying to please them with a design when it was going to be a freebie - and when the play's director is the one who suggested I the design I did. wink.gif

Ah, I won't quit donating... I'm just a bit miffed right now.

Thanks for your note!

Angel, I know your secret for your beautiful pieces of artwork, except for those exceptional hand-drawn pieces. wink.gif I used to use that program (Bryce). Try playing around with the lighting a little more, it will add dimension and feeling to your pictures. Also, looking over the internet you will find tutorials on blending and smoothing images. This way you could create a lamp post or anything that requires more than one shape blended seamlessly with another. For instance, a ball with a mountain texture blended with it and a cone bellow it with a criss cross pattern applied will look like a basic ice cream cone! Just play around with the program. Bryce is fun and easy! Good luck to you! Your off to a wonderful start! I would send you some of my creations, but I lost them a long time ago due to a zip disk crash. sad.gif Oh well. Have a wonderful day! smile.gif

Just a passer by,
I never claimed that it is a secret. I have stated before what programs I use. Thank you for the advice. It has certainly helped. I have spent time using it and playing with things. The pictures I have posted the ones in the beginning were my first few workings with the program. as I have progressed I have developed and refined my usage. I am not however ready to share those with anyone as of yet. when I become more confident with what I am doing then MAYBE I will share them.

Bright Blessings and please feel free to add your stuff here also or add a link to a site that shows your stuff so that we can see your workings as well.

Angel: are we ever confidant about how others will see what we create? I know that I'm not. I just finally got to the point that, if it gets to the point that I don't think it needs something, then heck with how I think others will percieve it. Just put it out. If they like it, great, if not, maybe I'll get lucky and they'll tell me where I went wrong.

After an eternity, I decided to do something today with photoshop. Not a really great piece, just playing around, and testing a new idea.

What you can't see. You think you've got your eyes open, but there's something there you just can't make out. They exist only in the peripheral.

I got the stock pic from www.vkstock.deviantart.com

Thanks, ya'll! You're too kind.

Celticrose, its colored pencil... not quite like those birds I used to do, though. I wanted this horse to be energetic, full of life and fire and passion, and to look as though he was going to snort flames in your face! The whole time I was working on it, I was thinking "don't overwork, don't overwork"

And by golly I didn't overwork it.

SB,

That is fantastic work!!! I think that you hit a perfect balance with this piece. I am kind of mesmerized by it. I have it open in another window and keep going back to it.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work.

It's been a while since I've posted anything here so I guess it's time. I have a work in progress. I am doing a thistle pendant and I have been scanning my wax carving at various stages throughout the process. I will be casting the finished carving in sterling silver this week and if it works out, I will post the silver piece when it's done. If it doesn't work out, well it's back to the drawing board (after my tears dry up).

Here's a page from my pocket sketch book, an illustration of one of my story characters, The Otter.... (original is 3.5" x 4.5", watercolor)

Posted by: oldraven 17-Mar-2004, 10:14 AM
A new piece. laugh.gif

They don't happen very often these days, but now that I've got a scanner & digital camera I'll be able to do a lot more. smile.gif

This is our Faith, a puppy slayer. She actualy did some damage to Buffy last night. Poor dog. Just doesn't seem fair that dogs fight to play, and cats fight to kill.

As for the Otter, you've got skills. I could never get watercolours to work quite right. I always used acrylics with water for the same feel, but I could only manage to get my abstracts to look like something decent. tongue.gif Great proportions as well.

Maybe I should change my title to Stealth Artist... laugh.gif

Silverdragon! Love your portrait! I envy anybody who can do watercolors! I am just too tight. To be loose and be comfortable with it is a gift! It is really beautiful! I think that is the first time I have seen your work! Terrific!

oldraven! Great photo of puppy slayer! I love those deep dark eyes that the photo accentuates. Makes her more mysterious. Beautiful job!

Posted by: oldraven 17-Mar-2004, 02:52 PM
Thank you so much, crose. smile.gif I am quite pleased with how this turned out.

Posted by: silverdragon 17-Mar-2004, 02:53 PM
Celtic Rose, I'm glad you like it! It's a bit different technique for watercolor -- the fact is that the technique I used for the Otter is almost identical with my oil painting technique... I started with a toned ground, did a faint underpainting in sepia, built up the image with glazes, and recovered highlights with titanium white. Classic Old Master stuff. My art teacher would be horrified.

Oldraven, every puppy needs to learn to respect cats. My Boston Terrier was particularly stubborn but learned after an eye scratch. I love the shallow depth of field in your image, the way it puts emphasis on the face.

Well, not really sisters. Just one. Ivy, who is my real sister, is the one in the middle, Angela, my fiance, is on the end, and Buffy, my beloved pup, is .... well, that's pretty obvious.

We were waiting for about 45 minutes for the sun to go down behind the hills that encompas the Bras D'or lake in Cape Breton, a peninsula off the tip of New Scotland, my home. The point was to wait until that time where the red sun lights up the bottom of the clouds, and reflect over the lake and give a dark silouette of the hills. I look to my right, and this is what I see. Before they had a chance to even notice what I was doing, I prepped the shot and took it. I think it came out better than the one we were waiting for.

On a side note, it's amazing how many people will stop to talk, or point out something interesting you should take a picture of, when you have a tripod.

Posted by: oldraven 22-Mar-2004, 03:36 PM
Absolutely. This wouldn't have been the same picture at all if they had been posing, or even looking at the camera. It's the difference between making a moment, and capturing one. Those you capture are always real. smile.gif

Thanks. I'm glad you like it.

Awesome =)

So many people tend to run from even being caught on film, and then they run from the resulting picture. Here's one those ladies can really be happy with =) and not run from. Nice how the sun lights their faces.

Thought that I broke it grappling at Jiu-Jitsu but it seems to be tendon or ligament related. A break is apparently more desirable for healing time. Anyways, I'm still working. The important fingers still work (thumb, pointing finger and driving finger).

Truth be told, Deb, she was. smile.gif We all were. Cape Breton really is a world all to its own out there. So detatched, and incredibly untouched. Have you ever been in a pure hardwood forest in early summer? Find the shepheard's hut in the highlands, and you will. Right out of a fairy tale. I know you hear that cliche a lot, but in this case, it's true.

Thank you.

Thief in the night

Angela and I were out for a drive in the country on Saturday, looking at a farmers Jeep. The Jeep (Cherokee) was nice, but the body had some pretty bad cancer in places. Plus, it was a two door. Not what we're looking for.

ANYWAY! The trip wasn't a total loss. We got a nice little tour of his farm, which was more of a hobby. He raised and bred horses, and who doesn't love looking at horses? One was about three days from birthing. Gypsy was her name. Poor girl was having one heck of a hard time getting comfortable.

After we left, we stopped at an old abandoned pig farm, jumped the fence, (and introduced Ange to the delicate art of getting through barbed wire fences), and took some pictures of the old house, corral, and these two very old tractors. One was a John Deere, and the other appeared to be an Oldsmobile. unsure.gif I didn't even know they made tractors, but like I said, it was an old fello. Long before my time, and probably before my fathers.

Well, as we walked back the the car, I spotted this in the grass. It must have been a weasel come to rob a local hen-house. Well, he got his feast, and the poor hen was left to mourn, (as much as a hen mourns).

Oh, oldraven! I loved the story and I always love your photos! This was a really great pic. Tells a story all on it's own as well! Great job! thumbs_up.gif

Tell me again what kind of camera you are using? I forgot! rolleyes.gif

Thank you ever so much, Rose. smile.gif

That one was taken with my Minolta Dimage E323 digital. Not my favorite instrument, but when the circumstances are right, it does the job just fine. smile.gif My usual weapon of choice is an old 70's Minolta XG-1 SLR 35mm.

Again, thanks for the comments. The picture is only the climax to the story. It's the events leading up to the capture that stick in your mind. It's a shame the photographer is usually the only one who knows the story.

king.gif

Posted by: CelticRose 18-May-2004, 03:49 PM
Yeah, but with that great pic one can use their own imagination. That is what makes the photo that much more wonderful!

Even though I now have a digital camera, I still prefer my Canon 35 mm SLR. I will probably be taking both on my vacation! Thanks for sharing with me what kind of camera.

But it was missing something. To cut and dry in b&w. So I added a bit of yellow to the midtones and shadows, and a touch of red highlights. Viola! Sephia. laugh.gif

I think it makes all the difference in the world.

Posted by: Roisin-Teagan 27-May-2004, 11:16 PM
Beautifully done!!! Your work is very unique and I love the subject matter. Remembering your other photographes posted earlier you seem to have an instinct or second sense on capturing the right perspective for your different subjects.

I'm a little envious---because I always wanted to take a photography class and take up photography as a full-time hobby. I was the photographer at a school I worked at and while at the university I had to fill in for our photographer a few times, so I know my way around a camera. But two things I lack are technique and finesse. Who knows I may buy that old camera I've always wanted and persue that dream anyway.

Cheers,
Roisin angel_not.gif

OMG! What a difference the two photos make! I thought the first one was terriic! the second one made all the difference in the world!

Oh, I am like Roisin! I am envious! I studied photography in college..............that was my major and you have something that I do not have either.......an eye for color, contrast, and depth of field..................and an artistic eye! I love this second photo much better! Great work!

Posted by: oldraven 28-May-2004, 07:46 AM
Wow. I really don't know what to say guys. Thanks so much.

Roisin, go get that camera. That's where I got started. I've never had a class, or even anyone show me how to work all the doo-dads on my SLR. I just played with it, and figured it out. tongue.gif The biggest help was watching ACTUAL photographers over at DevaintART. Looking back at my pieces from a year ago, they're lacking quite a lot.

Both you galls, give it another shot. It only cost a roll of film. smile.gif And the rewards are great.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. (no, I didn't forget you Macfive. wink.gif Thanks)

I am totally artistically challenged although I have dabbled in oils (just a hobby that started when I'd spend time with my grandmother who loves to paint). The few I've managed to do are now long gone to friends that liked them enough to want to display them (hopefully in a dark corner).
Looking at the gallery of all you've posted has inspired me to decide to try again. Maybe something will come of it.

Would love to be able to get someone of talent to do a custom design on my case much like RWF's.....Better yet, something of a Celtic\Scottish flavour on the wall in my living room. biggrin.gif

Thanks for sharing the photo.

How did you get the picture to go straight to you message instead of attaching it? I want to know how to do that so that people don't have to download pictues and what not...

find a site to host it, then when you have get the url which should end in .jpg or whatever the file name of your picture is and then copy and paste that url between hitting the image button. so it should look like (img) url.jpg (img)

For those of you who saw the picture of the thistle that I had carved out of wax previously in this thread, I finished the piece in sterling silver and it came out great. Once I get around to getting a picture of it, I will post it.

I just finished carving my newest piece which is the lion rampant. It started off as a relief carving (flat) but as usual, as I progressed, more and more wax came off. This one took me about a week to finish. It is about 3/4" high.

Wow. Nice piece. You use the lost wax technique for your pieces? That's nice..it seems to be a better way to get nicer wokes..IMO
BTW..I'll take a few of the lions tongue.gif

Hey I finally got some pictures of my trip to Ireland onto the computer. I scanned them so some of the details are lost, I hope you enjoy them!

Ceciliastar, those are incredible. Too bad these places always seem to be overcast. What kind of camera did you use, and what ISO film? I bet with a 400 those would have been a lot clearer. There are still a few things that can be done to spruce them up. smile.gif

Otherwise, your angles and points of perspective are great. I really enjoyed looking up at that castle ruin from beneath the tree, even though I wasn't there. laugh.gif

Nice pics, milady! I especially liked "Killarney Park."

Thanks everyone. Believe it or not, it was a dinky cheap disposable camera, 400 speed film, if that makes any sense. It's kind of annoying cause the pictures themselves are so clear and beautiful, but my scanner really stinks so much of the details and whanot were lost. I wish I could show you how some of them really look. Thanks for the feedback.
