I was just looking for "The Coal Tattoo" by the Fenians, off their CD Band of Rogues in the playlist, and while the rest of the CD is there, this track (which has been there in the past) is not.

A song that disappeared several years ago (when a bunch of the playlist did) that still has not reappeared is "Electric Blue" by Blaq Lily or Arminta (I think it was listed as the first). It's been missing a while, but I loved it and thought I'd mention it while I was reporting another song's disappearance.

There are now only 9 listeners showing for the live broadcast.

Something very strange is happening, for there to suddenly be a jump in the listener count of over 100 in just a half-hour space.

I listen with RealPlayer, but it has my Live365 name in the URL, so it shouldn't do something strange like count my stopped connection attempts as additional listeners, should it?

This is the first time I've gone back to listening to Highlander Radio in a month, and I tried to request some of my favorite songs.

My connection basically stalled, so I looked at the number of listeners and thought I was fine to stop and then start it, given that only 30-something listeners were listed as listening to the live broadcast.

Instead, I got the message that the station was at its free listener capacity, so the songs I requested are playing without my being able to hear them. I reloaded the main page again, and now it showed 153 users. Did 120 people really start listening in the course of a couple minutes?

I find it especially annoying because I have been unable to locate a way to purchase the CDs featuring two of the songs, so Highlander Radio is my only source of being able to hear them.

I stopped listening to Highlander Radio a while back because I got sick of the connection constantly having problems causing the music to keep skipping or the connection to drop entirely. It seems that is still an issue, which is a pity, as I love the music played here.

I don't know whether it's something that affects paid listeners or not (as I doubt many would tolerate it), but it's been a constant issue that I've faced. Ironically, it's what keeps me from getting a paid Live365 account that would eliminate part of the problem (suddenly being blocked out as a free listener or just having to hear the ads so often from the connection failing) because I don't want to pay for such poor reliability.

I can understand having displays on public or government-owned land having to either include all holidays being celebrated or none. Private property, though, is private property. If someone wants to express their beliefs and their joy in the season, there shouldn't be anything holding them back from doing so.

The same I think should hold true for holiday greetings. People acting just as themselves, as private citizens ... it's their faith, their beliefs, and their right to wish others well however they wish. It starts to get tricky when you start considering people acting as representatives of companies and other entities. I'm not really sure where I stand.

I don't happen to be Christian, but it doesn't offend me when someone tells me "Merry Christmas" -- I take it in the spirit it's meant and will usually wish them one back, even though I'll generally use "Happy holidays" if I'm the first to give such a greeting. In my opinion, holiday greetings should be inclusive of the beliefs of the wisher or the receiver or both. The only time it wouldn't really make sense for a holiday greeting to be exchanged would be if neither person celebrated the holiday in question. I see such greetings as being equally able to be wishing someone else a good day because it's one's own holiday as because it's their holiday.

There's a difference between wanting tolerance and equality for one's own beliefs and becoming intolerant in the treatment of another's beliefs.

I do that so that I know songs until I know the artist and title well enough that I'll remember them, but with only 5 song spaces, I just can't leave them in the favorites list for long after I've learned the artist and title.

My problem with this song was that I had to take a rather long hiatus from listening to Highlander Radio because of Internet connectivity issues (the computer would lose its Ethernet connection every 15-30 minutes or so, kicking me off the broadcast), and not requesting it in the meantime, I managed to forget it.

Loreena McKennitt also has a song called "Samain Night" on Parallel Dreams and one called "Stolen Child" on Elemental that seem to fit the theme. Actually, "Standing Stones" on Parallel Dreams and "The Lady of Shalott" on The Visit also seem like they'd fit, with their themes of ghosts and curses, respectively.

You might also check out McKennitt's The Mask & The Mirror CD. Almost all the songs on it have a mood that sounds rather like what you're looking for. "Bonny Swans" is about a woman whose sister pushed her into a stream to drown whose body gets made into a harp. "The Two Trees" also would probably fit quite well with your theme. Several others on the CD ("The Mystic's Dream," "Marrakesh Night Market," "Full Circle") have just always sounded rather witchy/magical to me.

"Allison Cross" by Malinky might also fit your theme.

I finally found it! It was "Shadow" by Susan Craig on Celtic Twilight 6.

I was at Borders and had a bit of time and thought I'd just try listening to the samples on all the CDs with cover art kind of like I remembered it having. I found it on the second CD I tried.

I had pretty much resigned myself to just having it the bits I could remember haunting my memory and never finding the actual song.

Installing XP on the laptop might not work because of how little RAM the laptop has. I had a 700MHz machine with 128MB of RAM, and it was extremely slow with XP on it. I think 128MB is the minimum RAM suggested for XP.

If the laptop has USB ports, your best bet is to acquire whatever patch or update from Microsoft allows 98 to access the USB ports, then do as GunChleoc suggested and attempt to download the Microvault drivers for 98, if they didn't already come with the device. This is probably the most versatile solution, as 98 will work better on an older machine like that than XP will.

Good luck!

And again ...

This time, a Clann an Drumma song labelled "Clann an Drumma - Haunti" (not sure if some of the title was cut off by the main page or what).

I tried to get the same problem to repeat in Firefox, but it didn't, though it wasn't exactly the same because I had to log on before being taken to the queue page.

I know this time was in IE but maybe not in Firefox. Last time was probably (but not definitely) Firefox, as that's my primary browser on my work computer.

I just tried again, and it did it in IE but not in Firefox (now with Battle by Pipin' Hot playing).

I'm beginning to think the queue page doesn't like me very much. wink.gif

It was working normally some this afternoon, but when I just went straight to the Now Playing page a few minutes ago, it did it again. I tried going straight to the Queue page and also had the same problem. The song playing at the time was "Susan's Ballet" by Tim Gorman, off of Celtic Loop.

If I try to go directly to the Now Playing or Queue pages without going through the main page, I get an endless set of dialog boxes with this message (with the appropriate file name):

Java Script Error

Description: 'lt' is undefined
Source: http://www.celticradio.net/php/now_playing.php
Line: 2

I'm not completely positive whether the undefined item's first letter is properly a capital i or a lowercase L because of the font in the message.

QUOTE (Macfive @ 22-Mar-2006, 09:02 PM)
I thought so, but for some reason it seems the requests are being put in the request queue and perhaps are being held until the rules say it is ok to play them.

I'll eventually revisit the request procedure and scripts. Again, it would be considerate to the rest of the listeners to only request maybe 3 songs from the same artist at any one time.

Unless the way the queue works has also changed along with much of the site (it looks wonderful, by the way) since I've listened a few months ago, it does in fact cause subsequent requests for the same artist to be delayed until the rules allow them to be played. Requests for a given song do disappear when the song is played, however, or at least they did the few times I saw them.

The only exception there used to be to this was when an artist or song had recently played; the artist or song could not be requested for another 1 or 3 hours, respectively, meaning that minimum spacing for songs by the same artist was every 2 hours unless multiple were requested at the same time. It could get extremely frustrating, especially when there were limited amounts of time between scheduled programming.

QUOTE (Irish Stepper @ 20-Apr-2005, 02:15 PM)
I have a question about the programing today.  At 4:08pm EST the website said that requests were enabled, and that the current program was "celtic gold".  What I noticed however, is that there was over 90 minutes of songs already in the Queue to be played...and these were not requests.  So it seems that any requests that get put in, will not get played for over 2 hours.  By then, requests get disabled at 5:30pm.  Tell me please....what's the point of having them enabled if there's not a snowball's chance of getting played until 8:00pm when the requests are enabled again?  unsure.gif

What about disabling requests an hour before scheduled programming is scheduled to begin and enabling requests an hour before scheduled programming is scheduled to end?

As an example --
4:00 Disable requests
5:00 Programming starts

7:00 Enable requests
8:00 Programming ends

That would eliminate at least some of the cases where someone requests something too close to when scheduled programming begins for it to be able to play beforehand. It would also allow listeners to request things to play soon after the scheduled programming ends instead of not being able to request anything that plays within an hour of programming ending unless it's requested prior to the programming beginning and requests being disabled.

Of course, if making requests and allowing songs from the request queue to go into the main queue are enabled/disabled together, it wouldn't work, but if they're not, it wouldn't seem to be excessively complicated.

I was quite impressed with the movie. The casting was excellent. The children's interactions made more believable the younger brother's treachery and his way of teasing Lucy. The movie managed to put into images things which I had difficulty with when I read the books, especially the animals and the fighting. It was a beautiful movie.

The musical score was absolutely amazing. It fit the scenes perfectly. My friends and I were discussing it afterwards and noted that while it's not music that you really walk out of the theater humming like some movies have (Star Wars comes to mind), it set the atmosphere of the various scenes beautifully.

--SPOILER WARNING--

One of the things I found most impressive was how, at the beginning of the battle, all the sound dissolved into a single drum, a single heartbeat. Then the lines met, and the music reflected the sudden chaos. Of all the musical effects, I think that was my favorite, followed closely by Tumnus's flute.

Altan's "Donal Agus Morag" was playing, but the Now Playing page says it was:

Artist: Altan
Song: Celtic Odyssey
Album: Runaway Sunday

From what I could find, that album doesn't actually have a song called "Celtic Odyssey" on it, though I was relying on Internet sources and may have incorrect information on the contents of the album.

Nevertheless, the song was definitely "Donal Agus Morag," which I believe is from Altan's Harvest Storm.

I performed in public for the first time this past Saturday with some other girls from my college's gaelic society. Of the three of us dancing, I was the only one who hadn't been doing so for at least a year.

It was a great deal of fun, despite my being a bit nervous because an ankle injury had kept me from dancing for almost three weeks beforehand.

I'm glad to be back to dancing after having not been able to hop or jump in one class and not being able to attend the next. Celtic music has always stirred my soul, and having steps to put to the music is even better.

I did pointe for a number of years, so I'm at least familiar with some of the more general methods of stretching and such. (I could have kicked myself for having forgotten to stretch out my calves after the first lesson. I did pointe for at least half a dozen years; I should know better.)

I suspect that there's just some muscles I'm not used to using right there, especially since there's a lot less soreness now than there was a day after the first lesson. I just know that sometimes the people in a field know some more specialized stretches, so I thought I'd ask.

I've finally started Irish dancing. w00t2.gif One of the student groups at my school has an arrangement with a local teacher, and we do lessons with her once a week. It's wonderful. I've wanted to do Irish dancing for ages, but I've never had the opportunity to do so.

The only downside is that I seem to have done something odd to my left foot. The joint where the big toe hooks on was sore after the first lesson last week up through my second lesson last night. During the lesson, once I started dancing, I noticed it stopped hurting, but it's back to being sore now. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can remedy that?

Bat
Genera: Pteropus
Collective Term: A cauldron of bats

Description
This is a decidedly unconformist creature, for as an airborne personality, the bat tends to look down at the conventions of the ground animals. And yet, since it is not a true bird and having not mastered the art of smooth controlled flight, it often appears awkward in social situations. (Hence the term -- acting batty). But as compensation for this social ungainliness, many bat personalities sport a built-in radar, which enables them to intuitively read the motivations of others.

Identifying bat personalities is not difficult. Being nocturnal creatures, they come alive at night and can be spotted in underground clubs or dimly lit bars. They prefer the sanctuary of dark clothing and dark corners, and you'll never see a bat sporting a heavy tan. These are intelligent, spiritual, creative individuals who use their full range of senses (other than their poor eyesight) to carefully navigate their way through life.

Bats have a habit of flitting in and out of social situations, swooping down to interact briefly with others before quickly flying off to resume their bat lives. Unassertive and aloof, they'll take flight at the first hint of a confrontation to seek comfort in their personal spaces that are decorated in unusual but expressive ways. The bat's sixth sense gives it a number of advantages in its work, and its insightful nature enables it to understand others better than it understands itself.

In the romance department, bats are enamored with the idea of love more than they are with its colder realities. Decidedly untraditional, they are prone to flights of extraordinary fantasy -- and it's not the traditional Ken and Barbie type of romance that tickles its fancy either. It's the Bram Stoker kind: dark, moody and gothic.

Bat personalities have an enormous sense of loyalty and if you ever do a favor for a bat, it will never relax until it has paid you back. In fact, in nature, the bat is the only animal (other than man) to demonstrate true altruism when unrelated individuals will unselfishly offer food to a cave-mate without expectation anything in return. This powerful sense of quid pro quo is one of the defining characteristics of the bat personality and anyone should consider themselves lucky to be in a bat's good graces.

Bats have no strong yearning for parenthood, for the kind of ego gratification that comes with having one's own children doesn't appeal to its karmic temperament. They are instead quite content to satisfy their maternal or paternal instincts by adopting or merely baby-sitting. If they do have children, they prove to be perfunctory parents: methodical yet unconventional . Still, bats place great emphasis on ethics and morality and insist that their children be indoctrinated in the values of good citizenship.

No luck, unfortunately. Do you know of any other sites which either list a (large) number of poems or which allow one to search for words in poems? I've tried most of the ones I get searching with google. Similarly, do you know of any lyrics databases which would include lyrics from Celtic music and not just mainstream stuff that allow searching for words?

I am fairly certain that the artist is not Loreena McKennitt, Heather Dale, Altan, or Capercaillie. (Actually, I'm completely certain on the first two.)

I thought I had already mentioned what I remember of the lyrics, but the lines were generally of the form ____ was ____ because/for ____/it was ____. I know there was a line about the ocean, one about something broad, one about something (either island or "I", I think) being lost and found. The two second blanks in the pair of each line were generally either opposites or something that was most definitely not the same.

The main part of the song itself is a poem, Irish or Scottish or English, I can't remember which. There were a few stand-alone verses that were in, if I am remembering correctly, Irish or Gaelic that were added. (I remember having looked up the lyrics at some point and finding them, which is where I have this information from.)

Keep listening, you'll hear it again.  Do you remember a time when you heard it on here? Even rough.  Heck, perhaps even which day smile.gif

I know that this is where I heard it, even requested it a number of times, and that I've heard it after some of the songs disappeared from the database, but I haven't heard it at all recently. That's why I'm having such problems recalling the lyrics of the chorus. In the meantime, the melody and snippets of the lyrics are stuck in my head.

It used to get played often enough that I'm hoping someone else will recognize it from what little I provided.
