"A Celtic Christmas"

We are getting closer to the start of the holiday season and we wanted to give you a little preview of whats coming up in December and what is going on now in the way of Christmas music.

Currently we are playing a mix of Winter Solstice and traditional Christmas music on our Northern Woods and Celtic Moon broadcasts. This music will play all of the way through to New Years.

Our yearly traditional "A Celtic Christmas" website theme and 24/7 Christmas music on Highlander Radio will begin on December 1st.

Starting December 13th we will be celebrating the 12 Days of Christmas. A CD will be given away every day until December 24th! The first 5 CDs will be Steve and Ruth's brand new holiday CD - "An Appalachian Winter".

A big thank you to Steve and Ruth for donating these CDs for the contest. They really are some good folk and we would highly encourage those that can't wait to purchase their CD from their website.

The contest will work in this way. We will post the CD to be given away and then at some point in the day we will ask for the first person to respond to win the CD. Watch this thread for when we being the contest on December 13th.

Happy Holidays!

Seems like everyone enjoyed it!

Maybe we should hold next month's in the chat room "The Lounge" - what does everyone think of that, would that be more interesting and fun?

Paul MacArthur
Founder of Celtic Radio

Hi Paul,

We'll we do the contest pow wow in "The Lounge" like you suggested in August and have a blast? There was 171 posts that night to enjoy the suspense...

Twelve Drummers Drummer!

For the next 5 days we have a very genereous donation of CDs to give away from Steve and Ruth Smith of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Their brand new Christmas CD - "An Appalachian Winter" (15 cuts) is a unique blend of traditional Holiday classics, Appalachian Christmas favorites, and new original, wintry pieces that make this CD definitely not your average Holiday CD.

How the contest works is we will announce the CD in the morning hours of each day. Sometime that day we will state that the "Contest is beginning" and we will take the 3rd poster or 1st poster or 2nd poster to win the CD. So, you have to wait until we are ready to give the CD away and if you are the numbered poster you win that CD.

In addition to An Appalachian Winter we also have 1 copy of Oceans Apart "The Carol-Singing Sea" and 3 copies of Blackmore's Night "Winter Songs" is on the way to us for this contest. We will mail the CDs immediately upon receiving your mailing address, so if you want the CD for Christmas make sure that all winners get their mailing address to us using our contact form:

http://www.celticradio.net/php/service_mod.php?type=contact

Ok, will be on later today to give this CD away.

Here is my favorite Christmas song:

When I was small I believed in Santa Claus
Though I knew it was my dad
And I would hang up my stocking at Christmas
Open my presents and I'd be glad

But the last time I played Father Christmas
I stood outside a department store
A gang of kids came over and mugged me
And knocked my reindeer to the floor

They said:
Father Christmas, give us some money
Don't mess around with those silly toys.
We'll beat you up if you don't hand it over
We want your bread so don't make us annoyed
Give all the toys to the little rich boys

Don't give my brother a Steve Austin outfit
Don't give my sister a cuddly toy
We don't want a jigsaw or monopoly money
We only want the real McCoy

Father Christmas, give us some money
We'll beat you up if you make us annoyed
Father Christmas, give us some money
Don't mess around with those silly toys

But give my daddy a job 'cause he needs one
He's got lots of mouths to feed
But if you've got one, I'll have a machine gun
So I can scare all the kids down the street

Father Christmas, give us some money
We got no time for your silly toys
We'll beat you up if you don't hand it over
We want your bread so don't make us annoyed
Give all the toys to the little rich boys

Have yourself a merry merry Christmas
Have yourself a good time
But remember the kids who got nothin'
While you're drinkin' down your wine

Father Christmas, give us some money
We got no time for your silly toys
Father Christmas, please hand it over
We'll beat you up, so don't make us annoyed

Father Christmas, give us some money
Don't mess around with those silly toys
We'll beat you up if you don't hand it over
We want your bread, so don't make us annoyed
Give all the toys to the little rich boys

Could somebody explain the symbols on the left about me! I think I'd like to be seen as dominie (teacher) which I am although retired now, instead of a peasant. What are the others all about?
I will not have a chance to win a CD if the times are the consideration as I am about 12 hours ahead of USA eastern time. unsure.gif

G'day kate!!

The symbols on the left give tidbits of info. The large Celtic Cross is an Avatar or picture that you chose to represent you. You can choose one of the ones offered, you can get the heraldry design for your name, or you can upload a picture to use (thats what I did, though I have a different pendant on now...hmmm...need to upload that one later) Anyway....
The "peasant" I believe is a representation of your place in the "posting ratio", ok, that isn't exactly right but the more posts you put up, the higher your 'position' as it were. After about 400 posts you get to choose some specialty titles or guilds or whatever (I am sure one of the Super-mods is gonna smack me soundly for hashing this up). Your flag is self explanatory as is the picture of the Lass. Does that about cover it??
Hope your doing well......
Peace

Jay

How old are you kids? I'm having the same problem with mine, especially the 11 year old. Next week will be worse. They are out of school for vacation. Hopefully we will have some warm days of 32 or so and I can throw them outside for a bit. A good snow would be good with less ice, than I could have them build a snow family. Maybe I can get them to work together and help clean house and put the tree up. My youngest is 9. Maybe we can get our children together. What is Christmas like where you live? I know it's summer there.

Hi RebeccaAnn smile.gif,
I,m very glad to meet you cheers.gif
So, I've 3 kids: 16, 14 and 8. I already had some troubles with the oldest one and now also with the second one ...This evening I really though that I don't know what to do , no more.
It's a very strange generation and a very terrible age.
Maybe, if you like we can better talk about our kids , in another topic or in another way. I need and I like to listen other experiences and opinions wink.gif
I think that your idea is GREAT(about what to do with your kids, in the holidays).
I love the snow. Where I live (now) is winter as well, cold but not too much; there are some mountains around me and there is a lot of snow in these days. They're 20 km.about my home.
But where we live is too wet and foggy.
I think that where you live, it must be wonderful..and I can imagine the Christmas!!!!
Here is nice, it much depends from the town and the kind of people.
I love the idea that maybe we can get our children together, but how is possible? Perhaps did I not understand very well? Could you explain to me, please? (My English isn't very good)
I'll be waiting your news smile.gif
Merry Christmas to you and your kids newyear.gif I wish very GREAT holidays for you and a lot of Peace and Love.

Blackmore's Night

Today's CD is by Candice and Ritchie Blackmore. Their group, Blackmore's Night, currently has many albums playing on Highlander Radio. We all know Ritchie Blackmore from his days with Deep Purple and the lovely and beautiful vocalist, Candice Blackmore, makes "Winter Songs" a truly exceptional Christmas album:

<object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000" id="obj1" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0" border="0" width="356" height="357" >

Our Review:

"Few Christmas albums can really break new creative ground in the Celtic, Medieval or Folk genre - but leave it to Blackmore's Night to create a true inspiration for this holiday season. A beautiful composition of 12 traditional Christmas songs performed in true Blackmore fashion with electric guitars, angelic vocals and sweeping melodies. Winter Carols is a holiday CD that is to be treasured year in and out. One of our favorite tracks, Christmas Eve, is certain to put anyone in the Christmas Spirit - even ol' Ebenezer himself would certainly pour another glass of this fine musical wine and toast to humanity and life! Winter Carols is a symphony of resounding holiday sounds that will brighten your Christmas all through New Years."

What is "Nollaig Shona agus Athbhliain faoi Mhaise Duit"? I know it's Gaelic but which one Scots, Irish or Welsh. I think it is Merry Christmas. How do you say it?
I always remember our troops. They are family.

Just as in English, the two expressions are often combined to say “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year” as follows:

“Nollaig Shona agus Athbhliain faoi Mhaise Duit.”
(NO-lihg HO-nuh AH-guhs AH-vlee-ihn fwee WAH-shuh wich).

My family's soldier will be home for Christmas. I have a daughter shipping out to Navy basic in February. My grandfather was in the Navy and my great uncle served in the Army during the D day campaign. The Armed Forces are always in my thoughts and prayers.

I've heard of this snow stuff. I think it is that white stuff you go to visit in the mountains and then come home. It is also that fake white stuff they make and charge people to play in.

Being in San Diego, we very rarely get it here, but it has happened before. Back in the mid 60s it snowed all the way to the ocean!!

What do you want for Christmas, Jim?

Posted by: mainopsman 20-Dec-2008, 08:57 AM
“Nollaig Shona agus Athbhliain faoi Mhaise Duit.”

I would like, a new CD or two for my Celtic Music Collection, or a Shillelagh to replace the one that belonged to my grandfather (he was of German/English decent, still trying to figure the connection) that was lost in moving.

Most most of all, I would love to see our economy recovering and everyone back to work. That is something we can all pray and wish for.

JIM

Posted by: WallaceGal 20-Dec-2008, 09:56 AM
Agreed on the economy!! I live in Michigan... *sigh*

Posted by: mainopsman 20-Dec-2008, 10:31 AM
WallaceGal:

Michigan has been hit very hard in so many areas, other manufacturing states have been hit hard as well. The Canadian auto industry which is tied with the US auto industry is getting hit also. Charities are coming up short this year, due to the poor economic picture. Many food banks are empty. More people are needing help and there is less available for them. We can only hope and pray things will change soon.

But, when you reflect on what is happening, maybe, it's time for all of us to get back to the true meaning of Hanukkah and Christmas. Peace and Goodwill toward our fellow man. Remember to drop what you can into the collection plate or the Red Kettles as you pass. A dime, a quarter, a dollar bill, adds up to help for someone who needs it, be it Hanukkah, Christmas or during the rest of the year.

Just the musings of an old man.

Right now, I would love to be able to give my son more of what he wants and needs for Christmas. I have one gift for him and that is it. People that were going to help us due to layoffs at my husband's work backed out on us. So now I have to try to help my son understand that this is all we could do.

I agree about the economy. IT SUCKS! My husband is now on a two and a half week layoff. When he goes back in January, we are not guaranteed that the layoff won't be continued either.

Happy Holidays! Yes, I am trying to keep a happy face and do the best I can in the present situation.

Don't worry about Christmas. All things will work out. I grew up without a father and times were hard for us. We had many struggles but we always managed. We may have had second hand clothes and not much but we were rich. We had love which is the greatest thing to have. We learned very early that the best gifts are handmade for they are filled with love. Just being together was enough. Every once in awhile we received a special gift. Miracles often happen at Christmas. Enjoy being with your family and make special gifts for each other. You will have a wonderful Christmas.
RebeccaAnn

Posted by: Faerydreamer 20-Dec-2008, 10:27 PM
That is very true, RebeccaAnn. Family is the best part of the holidays. We do treasure our time. My husband is seriously thinking about one gift for my son, adoption. My son's father passed away almost four years ago. I always stress to my son that we have the best, each other.

Thanks.

Posted by: RebeccaAnn 20-Dec-2008, 10:35 PM
What does your son think of your husband? How does he feel? I think being adopted would be the greatest gift ever. It would mean someone special cares about me and wants me enough to be with me for always. A father for Christmas would be the greatest gift. I could think of nothing better.
RebeccaAnn

Posted by: Faerydreamer 20-Dec-2008, 10:48 PM
Funny situation!

My current husband was my ex-husband's friend and caregiver. We have known each other for 12 years. Rich waited patiently for me. When my ex died, Rich started spending more time with us. I was thick headed about it. I did not realize what was going on until Christmas Eve 2005 when he gave me an engagement ring.

My son and my husband get along great. They have moments but my son is either and Indigo child (still researching) or ADD/ODD. Either way some moments are very difficult.

We have made a wonderful family together. Many people do not realize that Rich and my son are not biologically related. And the story behind the relationship is good for a laugh.

Happy Holidays to everyone!

Posted by: RebeccaAnn 20-Dec-2008, 10:55 PM
Sounds like your husband is a great man. The greatest gift for your son would be adoption. He already is a real dad. So make it official.

Tomorrow we will post the CD in the early morning and then take the winner in the afternoon. Sorry for late posts, but have been dealing with alot of snow in the Northeast.

Also had a scary trip home from New Hampshire on Saturday over Mt. Kancamagus - completely snow covered and thousand foot drop over the side of the road....don't want to do that again! biggrin.gif

Glad to be home and will be on top of these contests for the rest of the week! thumbs_up.gif

Posted by: CelticRadio 21-Dec-2008, 10:23 PM
Here are a few pictures of our trip over the Kancamagus highway in N.H. this past Saturday. This is a picture my son took looking out the passenger window. That is the side of the road and then about a thousand foot drop. I will post a few more pictures! fear.gif

Posted by: CelticRadio 21-Dec-2008, 10:25 PM
This picture shows a very dangerous grade that ends as a hairpin turn. One minute you are going west, the next you are going east.

Posted by: CelticRadio 21-Dec-2008, 10:29 PM
This is a picture as we started out on our adventure. The pictures do no justice. It is absolutely heaven driving through deep snow covered ravines, mountain meadows, forests, glacier ponds with the temperture hovering around 7 degrees and snow squals coming and going with each turn of the road.

Would not recommend this for the faint at heart. I nearly had a panic attack at the summit which was 2,800 feet. I've driven this route many times in the summer, but winter driving is another story...

Ok, enough with the pictures, we will get back to the contest. I am just glad to be back on the level ground of the Celtic Radio studios! thumbs_up.gif

<object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000" id="obj1" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0" border="0" width="356" height="357" >

Is it me?

Yes, you have won the CD! Please send us your mailing address using the contact form above.

My apologies Lady, we posted that information on the first post about 1 CD per member. We did have a mix up with LeeLee as she had won a CD and tried to win another CD, but she forfeited that CD after we caught the error.
