It is hard to believe that summer vacations will be starting so soon. With everyone being very cost conscious, do you have a great idea for vacation? Do you have a great destination, local festival, museum, point of interest in your area that would be great to visit? If so, would you share your thoughts?

I live in Schuylkill County, PA. While the town is small with not many things to do, around us are lots of interesting things.

Knoebels Grove Amusement Park is less than a half hour away. It is one of the few amusement parks around that does not charge admission. You buy tickets to ride the rides. This saves money because you are not paying to go into the park with your family if you cannot ride many of the rides due to dislike or disability.

Centralia, PA is literally just around the corner from here. It is the town that has disappeared due to a coal mine fire. You can see the smoke coming out of the earth. You can see surface level devastation that this place has endured.

Here in Ashland, there is the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine. Here you get to go down into a former coal mine and learn what life was like. There is also a 1/4 mile steam train ride to see the strip mine portion.

If you look on a map, there are other attractions around the area.

I live in New York City. They tell me there's a lot of fabulous things here; people come from all over to see them. I confess I never bother much with that stuff any more -- I hardly "use" the city at all. The most amazing thing I can tell you about here is my fantastic, run-down, underfunded, overcrowded, multi-culti City College of New York, where I have the scruffiest, most opinionated, most politically bodacious, most challenged and most challenging students in the known universe, and I wish I could take every one of you to lunch in our dubious, overpriced, under-inspected anti-gourmet cafeteria and let you talk with them. Summer session is no vacation for us -- but for you it might be the trip of a lifetime. angel_not.gif

stoirmeil;

Sounds like the boarding school my Dad put me in. I lasted 3 months and got expelled. Got a helluva hammering when I got home. That's where I learned to detest Bananas. Hate the things.

Western New York has a lot of things to do also. You can find places to walk and enjoy nature. Lake Chatauqua is absolutely beautiful. I miss that area very much.

Well we don't have much in Ironwood. Lake superior, outdoor sports, Hurley, the world's tallest Indian, and probably the fastest shrinking economy.
Its too bad we had to make national news for this:

The only thing where I live is 15,000 cows, nearly as many hogs and who knows how many chickens and turkeys. On a warm summer day all of the above are evident!

What do you wish?

great landscapes?
a great culture?
more than 1.000 years history?
beautiful towns and villages?
appetinzingly food and drinks?
8 million friendly and happy people?

All these we have here. But the best case is: All these tings are nearby (for American or Canadian relations of course) 575km (357miles) from East to West and 294km (182miles) from North to South...

That's Austria!
