I'm seeing winter storm warnings for the Midwest and New England. Have you folks had enough snow yet? We expect the low 80s by midweek here in Sunny Southwest Florida! cool.gif

MacEoghainn,

No sir...if it were up to me it would be winter all year round and I wouldn't mind one bit...I love snow..I could eat snow...sleep in the snow...play in the snow...shall I continue to bore you...no I think you get it well enough... biggrin.gif

I know some will think me nuts but hey! we can't agree on everything I guess!!!

I welcome the snow. I wish it would come. With snow we would not be so cold or have so many main breaks and so much ice. This 15 or below and high winds is too much.

SNOW! SNOW! BEAUTIFUL SNOW! CLEAN SNOW! No mud! No heat! GOD I hate summer! It could be Fall and winter ALL year 'round! Anything over 60 degrees is TOO hot and we should roll up and go home! Summer's heat is the death of those who work out side and is to be avoided at ALL costs! NO, I haven't had enough winter yet, ask me in 5-7 years.

I really hate to snow on your parade folks but if you really want some snow, Come Get Some!!!!!
I had it, I have shoveled enough, slipped enough and have pushed and rocked enough cars out of the snowbanks for this year. I'm tired of below zero weather and wind chills in the minus double digits. Want snow? Come on up and Welcome to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan! Hopefully the roads are clear and you can get through.
Snowfall
(in inches, to 7 a.m.)
Monday: none
Season: 123.0
January: 44.3
On ground: 22.0
But hey guess what we get sun and clear skies tomorrow and a whole 21 degrees.
It's suppose to snow for the next two weeks after that. Every day. sad.gif

With all the snow, how are the ski resorts doing? With the economy as is, do people still support the resorts? Or is the weather not right for skiing?

I agree with you so much and we don't even get that much at the other end of the state, I don't think I could live way up there and not sure how you do it.

Harlot;

To put it as politely as I can "I Hate, Despise, Detest, Abhor, and Dislike", that insidious white stuff that falls from the sky as a blight upon the Earth. The temperature could fall to -700C and I wouldn't mind at all it is that wet, cold, clinging, white, fluffy, stuff, that I can do with out.

Ah yes another typical morning in the great white north. Woke up this morning to find another gift from the heavens..........2 more inches of snow. I couldn't agree more with Camac on this subject. If it never snowed again it would suit me fine. At least in two weeks time my wife and I will be basking in 80 degree weather and sitting on a beach in the Dominincan.

piobmhorpiper;

Thanks for the congrats. Can't believe a year has gone by. They say time flies when your having fun and I have had alot of fun this past year. BTW Have got room in a suitcase for a stowaway.

Camac.

PS; It's snowing again. When finished another 15-20cm. Will it never end?

Posted by: piobmhorpiper 28-Jan-2009, 07:13 AM
Camac I fear my carryon is a wee bit on the small size for you to fit into and me thinks the airline frowns on passengers travelling in steerage. I will not miss anything about winter while I am away. The only white stuff I will see wil be sand.

I got this morning open the blinds and the Jeep was covered with snow again,I just hate surprises like that. Please "Make it stop"

Posted by: togo 28-Jan-2009, 09:19 AM
Yeah I've had it with the snow. I love it in December for the holidays but after that it can stop.
Winter seems to last longer now too. When I was a kid I thought I remembered having a spring jacket on in during March and seeing no more snow and warming temperatures. Now it seems we don't get the great weather til May!
Ok gotta to go shovel now and move some of the snow that's coming down at this very moment before it changes over to sleet like they say it will by the afternoon.

Posted by: Faerydreamer 28-Jan-2009, 10:03 AM
I have had more than enough snow. I am once again trapped in my home because I cannot walk safely in the ice due to my stroke. I really hate this. Spring where are you?

Posted by: Camac 28-Jan-2009, 10:14 AM
It finally dawned on me why it is snowing so much. It's the Inuit, they have been feeding blubber to the weather Gods to make it snow in the south. I think they are trying to get back at us for the Global Warming.

Camac.

Posted by: Faerydreamer 28-Jan-2009, 10:19 AM
Okay, then lets find them and take away the blubber supply so that they cannot feed the weather Gods anymore! I am tired of this weather. It is too cold and I want to start walking my dogs. They would love it if they could go for walks everyday.

Posted by: Camac 28-Jan-2009, 10:26 AM
Faerydreamer;

I agree but there is a slight problem, there is only about 100,000 of them and that works out to somelike one ever 10,000 square kilometres and that only counting the one in Nunavut and the North West Territory not the ones in Labrador. Best time to find then is in the summer when you don't need to find them.

Or it could be the beginning of the next Ice Age that a number of Climatologists believe is now beginning (The Russians are fairly sure it's coming and I have read that some of their recent actions concerning Natural Gas is at least in part driven by this belief).

Haven't you heard the news? It's global warming. That is why in the time of dinosaurs this northland was a great tropics and in the time of first man the land was filled with glaciers that created the Great Lakes.
Today is a beautiful day. The new snow makes the land sparkle with diamonds. It's 27 and no high winds. I would love a day like today if we had a snowman making snow insted of this powder. I can't go out long but I could go out and make a snow family with my girls.

There is a chance that another 15cm will be here on Monday. Nobody believes me but I'm telling you it is half way up the C.N. Tower.

It's kind of hard to go for a walk when you have to dig 100 feet straight up just to get to the surface and when you get there it isn't the surface just a big snow cave with another 100 feet above you.

You might call this a "natural soundproof insulation"....humphhht!!!!

We dig tunnels here under the snow like passegeways...it's a lot of fun you know. Besides it seems worse than what it really is for the city is not really wise to "dump" it all off on residents properties.

Instead of having the snowblowers blowing it on you shouldn't they have trucks in front of them and then dump it all where it belongs, at the snow dump site somewhere??? And I see that some of the snow on the roof top have been dump in front of the house as well so no wonder it piles up at one point....ah!!! city folks...twisted.gif

Nah!nah!piobmhorpiper don't try to pass this one on me...I know the tricks...it seems worse than what is really is!!! dumping snow from the roof top...tsk tsk.

I do not want anymore of that white crap. I have had it with winter and the cold weather.

My dear friend,

As much as I respect the senior citizens and all as I've worked pretty much all my life with seniors...no one "earns" the right to complain...no IMHO and you may not like it but I think it is more in the human persona to complain all the time...over nothing and everything.

My parents did the same as you did...they had to walk to school for over an hour an a half morning and night...that was life then.

And even now my mom and dad enjoys very much the winter season for it's beauty and enjoys feeding the birds and little wild animals that comes near their house. My mom who is 75 though tired lately still shovels snow and enjoys it very much as she is outside and breath fresh air.

No...I don't think my friend that senior citizens earned the right to complain...they have taken that right 'tis not the same. wink.gif but I like them all the same even the "crusty old farts"... wub.gif for my dad is the champ at "whining".

It snowed yesterday, it snowed earlier this week, as well as dropped freezing rain, it did the same thing last week, and we've had blizzards already before that. New Years Eve was a particularly crazy blizzard, where we were actually snowed in at Angela's parents' house. We didn't get home until the night of the 2nd.

And February just got started. wink.gif I don't expect to see grass until April.

On the News to-night they were talking about 127 of our American cousin who had to be rescued from an ice flow on Lake Erie just off shore from Ohio. It seems they were going fishing and there was a large crack in the ice so they build a bridge made of wooden pallets across the crack. Well what with the warmer temp. and the winds the flow shiffted and the make shift bridge floated away leaving them all stranded on the flow. Both the US Coast Guard and Rescue Canada had to air lift them all to safety from about 1Kilometre out in the lake. The local Sheriff summed it all up in one sentence. He said "Talk about dumb" and something about there not being any law agaist stupid. People never learn. Every year ice fisherman get straned on Lake Simcoe north of Toronto because they don't heed the warning when the ice breaks up. The Toronto Police arrested a couple of people last week for walking from the Toronto Island to the mainland across the ice because they interfered with the ice breaker and delayed ferry traffic.

note.gif SNOW IS IN THE AIR

SNOW is in the air
Everywhere I look around
SNOW is in the air note.gif
Every sight and every sound

And I don't know if I'm being foolish
note.gif Don't know if I'm being wise
But it's something that I'M REALLY ENJOYING
And it's there when I JUST LOOK OUTSIDE

SNOW is in the air
In the whisper of the trees
SNOW is in the air note.gif
In the DRIVEWAYS AND EVERYWHERE

And I don't know if I'm just dreaming
Don't know if I feel sane
note.gif But it's something that I'M REALLY ENJOYING
And it's there CALLING OUT MY NAME

(Chorus) note.gif
SNOW is in the air
SNOW is in the air
Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh

SNOW is in the air
note.gif In the DRIVEWAY AND EVERYWHERE
SNOW is in the air
When the day is nearly done

And I don't know if IT'S an illusion
Don't know if I see it true
But IT'S something that I must believe in note.gif
AS IT'S there FALLING DOWN IN THE STREETS

SNOW is in the air
Every sight and every sound
note.gif And I don't know if I'm being foolish
Don't know if I'm being wise

But it's something that I'M REALLY ENJOYING
note.gif AS it's there FALLING DOWN IN THE STREET....

Oh! Dear...I think I'm in the wrong place here...sorry folks who don't like winter and are fed up...I really thought I was in the "What it's like outside?" thread...and was just describing what we are experiencing right now in a song you see....

We had a couple nice sunny days up here for a change. So nice they had to cancel a couple winter events in the area including the Copper Peak snowmobile hill climb. But then it all went sour today. Back to the cold wind and low temps. Now all that melted snow that was on the roads is now all iced up again and driving is a pain in the arse!

I have an other question: Did anyone heard something about snow-chains there? These things can be worth their weight in gold. I have to use these instruments quite often and everytime I congratulate myself that I arrived this decision. wink.gif
No games, no jumping out of the car and try to stop it by keep hold of the door - the only thing you do - a littlebit more careful brake and bring the car to a halt early enough - or/and you simply dodge the predicament... So we do it in Austria... biggrin.gif

My wife and just got back from The Dominican last night to a frigid welcome at the Toronto airport of -14C. After enjoying temps at 26-30C for 7 days. And we also landed during a snow storm. Only good thing is we statred the car remotely from the train as we passed over the parking lot so the car was all warmed up before we got in it. Thoroughly enjoyed the white outs we passed through on our two hour drive home as it almost totaly made us forget about our week in the sun. Oh Canada I'm so happy to back in your arms......NOT! dots.gif

Camac

Hi Camac,

I think there's to discuss what's more important: Clean roads in summer and in every winter a lot of disorders in traffic because of accidents with physical and personal damages - or lots of more safety in winter at the cost to repair a bit more in summer.
I'm sure in your road system are existing road works (especially in summer) too. I think the one or another road work more don't carry weight - the more so as snow chains or studded tires don't kill a road directly and complete, even more there is snow enough... so that the work during the warm season should be manageable.
We have here in Austria a lot of roads where in winter (especially trucks and pick-up trucks, but sometime all vehicles too) binding have to use snow chains or studded tires.
Mostly there are roads (and highways) through/within the Alps but also in the hills whre are dangerous inclines and/or a lot of traffic. And I can say that we have here in Austria a high qualitative road system. And the number of road works where correct winter damages keep within a limit.

Best regards from Austria

Ingo

InRi:

As our road system is far more extensive than that of Europe and the volume of traffic per day far exceeds that of Europe it is just to expensive to repair roads that have been dammaged by chains and studs. Also we really don't have to worry about high elevations here in Ontario, the highest point is in a little town northwest of Toronto called Dundalk, It's about 455 metres or 1500 feet above sea level. When you stand in the centre of town everything and place in Ontario is downhill.

In Washington we are divided by the Cascade Mtns. To get from one side of the state to the other we have to cross one of three mountain passes, the lowest of which is just over 3000 ft. With the weather coming in off of the Pacific, we can get some massive snow falls. It isn't unheard of to get 4 feet of snow in 36 hours.
Because of this, we are REQUIRED to carry chains unless we have 4WD, and even then it's a real good idea to carry them.
Do they chew up the roads? Yes, but ALL cross state travle and commerce would cease without them.

beer_mug.gif

Posted by: InRi 21-Feb-2009, 01:13 PM
Dear Camac,
I must say I haven't really an imagination how wide is Canada. Well, I can check it at a map but such great distances as there are for me elusive. I don't know how many kilometers roads are existing in Germany or Austria (I'm sure some thousands) but I think it's a trickle only in comparsion with the road system in Canada or U.S. As in Germany (by example) you have in Canada really great areas where you can go without chains or other additives all-the-year (a reasonable kind of moving a car assumed). You note Ontario... But I am sure too, that there are some regions too, where you'll get a lot of problems without chains disregarding all carefulness.
Dogshirt, you describe exactly the situation that I mean...
Yes, chains chew up the roads - if there too little snow on the road and so the chaims can scratch it (and driving there by chaimes is the same as a walk on eggshells). If there is snow enough you'll never reach the asphalt-covering. I have to go some days on roads (sideroads) where lies about until 30cm and more of the white stuff (upon each other wink.gif) and after I drove there you can't see the asphalt-cover. There you can't chew up the road. Of course it is wise to use chains if there is snow enough. Sometimes I have to mount the chains two or three times a day. Currently I didn't pull down the chains because I had to mount they everytime before I leave the main roads... (the most of my costumers reside away from the main roads... There is currently snow enough.
Camac you can believe that I share your "ecstasy" about "the white stuff" absolutely wink.gif I don't drive just for fun only, but I'm working for a parcel service and have to serve my load wherever it is needed and whatever the weather.

Even though you can drop all the Continenal US inside Canada our road system is about 1/2 of the US. 90 Percent of Canada is wilderness. The 401 Highway which runs across the top of Toronto is the busiest highway in North America it carries more vehicle in this 100km stretch than the famous L.A. Freeway system. There is a automated counting system at the Junction of this highway and Keele street where the Provincial Ministry of Transport is located and it registers 1 MILLION vehicles every 24 hours. A lot of cars and trucks and if they had studs or chains there wouldn't be much of a highway left. It is 5,078 km as the goose flies from St. John's NFLD to Victoria B.C. Driving distance is 7,207 Km. or at 8 hours a day 11 days 2 hours and 50 mins.

Falling Snow

See the pretty snowflakes
Falling from the sky,
On the wall and housetops
Soft and thick they lie.
On the window ledges,
On the branches bare,
Now how fast they gather,
Filling all the air.

Look into the garden,
Where the grass was green;
Covered by the snowflakes,
Not a blade is seen.

Now the bare black bushes,
All look soft and white,
Every twig is laden -
What a pretty sight!

The snow is now have way up the light standard and a herd of musk ox has taken refuge in the glaring light. I think they are being stalked by a pack of Arctic wolves. There have been reports that icebergs have been spotted on Lake Ontario and that a glacier is forming in the Humber river valley. The Ice Age cometh.

This joke was sent to me from a very good friend of mine...and thanks for the good laugh my friend...

So I'm posting it for your enjoyment and hope to bring a smile upon the faces of those who'll read it.

It's all in good fun.

Because Everyone In Canada Lives In An Igloo.

Now that Vancouver has won the chance to host the 2010 Winter Olympics, these are some questions people from all over the world are asking. Believe it or not these questions about Canada were posted on an International Tourism Website. Obviously the answers are a joke; but the questions were really asked!

Q:I have never seen it warm on Canadian TV, so how do the plants grow(England)
A.. We import all plants fully grown and then just sit around and watch them die.

Q:Will I be able to see Polar Bears in the street? ( USA )
A: Depends on how much you've been drinking.

Q:I want to walk from Vancouver to Toronto -can I follow the Railroad tracks? ( Sweden )
A: Sure, it's only Four thousand miles, take lots of water.

Q:Is it safe to run around in the bushes in Canada ? ( Sweden )
A: So it's true what they say about Swedes..

Q: Are there any ATM's (cash machines) in Canada ? Can you send me a list of them in Toronto , Vancouver , Edmonton and Halifax ? ( England )
A: What, did your last slave die?

Q:Can you give me some information about hippo racing in Canada ? ( USA )
A: A-fri-ca is the big triangle shaped continent south of Europe .. Ca-na-da is that big country to your North...oh forget it. Sure, the hippo racing is every Tuesday night in Calgary . Come naked.

Q:Which direction is North in Canada ? ( USA )
A: Face south and then turn 180 degrees Contact us when you get here and we'll send the rest of the directions.

Q: Can I bring cutlery into Canada ?( England )
A: Why? Just use your fingers like we do .

Q: Can you send me the Vienna Boys' Choir schedule? ( USA )
A: Aus-t ri-a is that quaint little country bordering Ger-man-y, which is...oh forget it. Sure, the Vienna Boys Choir plays every Tuesday night in Vancouver and in Calgary , straight after the hippo races. Come naked.

Q: Do you have perfume in Canada ? ( Germany )
A: No, WE don't stink.

Q: I have developed a new product that is the fountain of youth. Where can I sell it in Canada ?( USA )
A: Anywhere significant numbers of Americans gather.

Q: Can you tell me the regions in British Columbia where the female population is smaller than the male population? ( Italy )
A: Yes, gay nightclubs ..

Q: Do you celebrate Thanksgiving in Canada ? ( USA )
A: Only at Thanksgiving.

Q: Are there supermarkets in Toronto and is milk available all year round?( Germany )
A: No, we are a peaceful civilization of Vegan hunter/gathers. Milk is illegal.

Q: I have a question about a famous animal in Canada , but I forget its name. It's a kind of big horse with horns. ( USA )
A: It's called a Moose. They are tall and very violent, eating the brains of anyone walking close to them. You can scare them off by spraying yourself with human urine before you go out walking.

Q: Will I be able to speak English most places I go? ( USA )
A: Yes, but you will have to learn it first.

A Scotsman was invited for a visit to the home of his Canadian friend. Soon after the Scotsman arrived, he glanced out the window to see a huge beast just outside. He pointed, and asked his Canadian friend, "Och, lad, what's that?" The Canadian replied, "Oh, that's a moose." The Scotsman stared in disbelief, and replied, "That's a moose?! Well, how big are yer cats around here?"

Hey Flora!!!

Not that I want to go offtopic here but just to show you on this picture below this fantastic and quiet creature crossing the road in front of our car while driving in the Nova Scotian's Highlands mountains...I was out of my car just looking at the vistas in front of me when my husband whispered to me very gently to not make any sudden move and turn my head slowly to look at what was coming as he was still sitting behind the wheel in the car.

There these animals are not particularly scared of humans as they are not hunted down...but it is quite a sight to have one so near you especially a big buck like that.

We got back from the Dominican Last Friday, and now not a week later it feels like we never went anywhere. This was in my email when I got back and thought I would share it with you all. I have tried to clean it up a bit but be warrned it is graphic and full of that famous four letter word....SNOW!

Date: Sun, 3 Nov
Ah,yes... O Canada, Our home and native land!

Dear Diary

Aug. 12 - Moved to our new home in Canada. I am so excited. It's so beautiful here. The mountains are so majestic. Can hardly wait to see them with snow covering them.
Oct. 14 - Canada -- it is the most beautiful place on earth. The leaves have turned all colors and shades of red and orange. Went for a ride through the beautiful countryside and saw some deer. They are so graceful. Certainly they are the most wonderful animals on earth. This must be paradise. I love it here!
Nov. 11 - Remembrance Day. Deer season starts soon. I can't imagine anyone wanting to kill such a gorgeous creature. Hope it snows soon. I love it here!
Dec. 2 - It snowed last night. Woke up to find everything blanketed with white. It looks like a postcard. We went outside and cleaned the snow off the steps and shoveled the driveway. We had a snowball fight (I won). When the snow plough came by we had to shovel the driveway again. What a beautiful place. I love Canada!
Dec. 12 - More snow last night. The snow plough did his trick again to the driveway. I love it here.
Dec. 19 - More snow last night. Couldn't get out of the driveway to get to work. It's beautiful here but I'm exhausted from shoveling. Damn snow plough.
Dec. 22 - More of that white pooh.gif fell last night. I've got blisters on my hands and a sore back from shoveling. I think the snow plough hides around the corner until I'm done shoveling the driveway. A$$hole.
Dec. 25 - Merry Freaking Christmas! More frigging snow. If I ever get my hands on the sonovabitch who drives the snow plough, I swear I'll kill the bastard. Don't know why they don't use more salt on the roads to melt the damn ice.
Dec. 27 - More white pooh.gif last night. Been inside for three days now except for shoveling out the driveway after that snow plough goes through every time. Can't go anywhere, the car's stuck in a mountain of white crap and it is so frigging cold. The weatherman says to expect another 10 inches of the crap again tonight. Do you know how many shovels full of snow 10 inches is?
Dec. 28 - That stupid weatherman was wrong. We got 34 inches of the crap this time. At this rate it won't melt before summer. The snow plough got stuck up in the road and that bastard came to my door and asked to borrow my shovel. After I told him that I had already
broken six shovels shoveling out all the crap he had pushed into my driveway, I damn near broke my last one over his freaking head.
Jan. 4 - Finally got out of the house today. Went to the store to get food and on my way back a damned deer ran in front of the car. Did about $3,000 damage to the car. Those beasts should be killed. The bastards are everywhere. Wish the hunters had
exterminated them all last November.
May 3 - Took the car to the garage in town. Would you believe the thing is rusted out from all that salt they put all over the roads.
May 10 - Moved to Florida. I can't imagine why anyone in their right mind would ever want to live in such a God forsaken place as Canada!

Just where the heck did that expression come from that states"It's cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey"
Well here's the answer:

It was necessary to keep a good supply of cannon balls near the cannon on old war ships.. But how to prevent them from rolling about the deck was the problem. The best storage method devised was to stack them as a square based pyramid, with one ball on top, resting on four, resting on nine, which rested on sixteen.
Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem -- how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding/rolling from under the others.
The solution was a metal plate with 16 round indentations, called, for reasons unknown, a Monkey. But if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make them of brass - hence, Brass Monkeys.
Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannon balls would come right off the monkey.
Thus,it was quite literally, cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey. And all this time, you thought that was just a vulgar expression, didn't you?

Now you Know!

Despite it all we still LOVE our Home and Native Land. I'll assume you know who Dave Duval is on CTV. He's retiring so people won't have to look at his smiling face as he predicts another zillion inches of that white crap.

My dear Honourary papa...I will tell you a confidence....you know me as Diane Cook but my maiden name is Diane Duval....*cough*cough* and it happens that I have a smiling face when that Duval bozo predicts another zillion inches of that SNOW crap like you call it.

You know that I teasingly gripe about winter and snow, I really am not amoured of the white stuff' but last night for some reason I thought of the times as a kid rushing to get outside and play in the snow or go skating. I also thought of the winter of 1974-75 our first winter in our first house up in Orangeville. There was one night I will never forget, it was after dinner and we had gone for a walk, with me pulling a four year old Paula on her sleigh. It was a beautiful winters' eve clear crisp and there was at leat three feet of snow on the ground. As we headed for home it became so quiet and then this gentle snowfall began, the Flakes were the size of quarters, it was as they say a magical moment, When we stopped for a minute to just watch the snow drift down Paula asked why we had stopped. I remember saying shush peanut if you listen really hard you might hear the snow Faeries laughing. Well her eyes got the size of saucers and you could see her straining to hear. After we got home and she was getting ready for bed she kept telling her Mom that she had heard the Faeries. If you ask her to this day she will say she heard them. The things that pop into ones head, you think I was getting maudlin.

Here we go again in New England!
A dusting of just a couple of inches today BUT overnight 12 -16 inches into tomorrow in my area. Getting the snow blower gassed up and ready to go.

I am sick of the snow but I have to admit it does look very pretty coming down outside my window right now. Maybe I'm getting a little sentimental knowing that it could be one of our last ones of the year (most likely not!). Spring is around the corner right?? Someone convince me.
It does look nice now but I'll be cursing it again tomorrow.

We are back to doing siding on the house at work. I would WAY rather do it in the snow than in mud up to my knees! Since all new houses are backfilled with freshly moved earth and no grass going yet, it will turn into a sea of slimy muck with just a cup of water! I don't even want to consider what happens when the snow melts! blink.gif
