The current Pope was a professor of History before he ever went to the Vatican. His statement was a quote from historical writings. A quote which I'm sure can be viewed by many as true today as it was when it was first made in the 1600's.
Should he appoligize? How do you appligize for history? I think he was trying to calm the waters when he did so. The reaction to his statement resulted in the deaths of religious nuns, priests and burning of Christian Churchs, but then this seems to be the norm not the exception
