Silver Dragon smiles shyly.
"No, we never have. I'm very pleased to make your acquaintance, Miss Cat."
Then, ever distractible,
"Hey, when did Hamm install air hockey? How about a game?"
She lumbers over to the table, and drops a scale in the coin slot. The whirr of the compressor starts, and the puck drops into the return slot. She puts the puck on the table, does a couple of experimental shots, and waits expectantly. |

Silver Dragon incinerates and consumes another marshmallow.
"Thanks for asking, Dreamer, but no, there's not a lot that can be done for poor Fluffy. Her kidneys are failing; while she seems frisky enough right now, they're already half normal size. A common problem with older basilisks, it seems. We've got her on a special diet that may give her a few more good months."
Silver Dragon's tail starts tapping in time with Hamm's playing...

Silver Dragon impales a marshmallow on a claw. She glances around to be sure that Hamm isn't looking, then discreetly chars it until it resembles a charcoal raisin, using a tiny blue flicker of flame. She eats the carbonized lump with evident enjoyment.
"Thanks, Dreamer! I think you know that I have a day job as a teacher. There's been nothing but overtime and pressure there for months. And my dear pet basilisk is dying, the vet says, which doesn't improve my mood. I haven't had time to do any filmmaking, either. One of my colleagues finally got disgusted with me and told me to take a day off... so here I am. Even though the grading is piling up while I'm here, I feel better already. And how have things been with you?" |

The Silver Dragon folds her wings and enters the pub. She makes her rather large way to her favorite corner booth. She looks tired; her wings droop, her scales are tarnished.
"Hamm, old pal, how about a hot tea with cinnamon, please?"
She then notices the Dreamer sitting with toasted marshmallows.
"How lovely to see you again, my dear! It's been too long."

SilverDragon looks around the pub. The young lady in white is huddled by the fire. The Dreamer and Lady Danann are in deep conversation. The jester, after several spiced wines, seems sleepy. The Wizard is staring into a corner, muttering, "No, stay away! Danged cat..."
Ham, here's a scale for my tab. I think it is really time I was back at my day job. The class will meet whether I'm there to teach it or not...

Jester! good to see you! The flying's OK -- although it's been dreadfully wet in my part of the country. I've spent some time getting rid of that silly male who ... can you believe it? ... trashed my hoard! I can certainly empathize with you, Wizard -- dealings with the opposite sex have often baffled me. Fortunately, Kurt had no magic powers... but he DID breathe on my collection of celluloid classics! My silent film collection -- exploded!
SilverDragon snuffles a bit. Ham knows the symptoms, and quickly brings another flagon of tea.
But you charming folks don't want to hear me whine about my love life! And dear young lady, -- excuse me, I didn't catch your name -- you come right over and sit in my booth to warm up, if you like. We dragons are quite warm.
Dreamer! I've long wanted to meet you. You know, I have a part in my latest script that might suit you...
SilverDragon sits a bit straighter to make room for Monarch's Own. Her head reaches the rafters. Her tail is tapping time to the music. |

A slow, deep "Thwop, thwop" is heard, as of a helicopter on its last legs. Ham starts making some cinnamon tea. A shadow passes over the window. SilverDragon folds her wings as she enters the pub, and makes her rather large way to a corner booth. As she insinuates herself around it, Ham smiles and brings her the mug of tea, which she pays for with a single silver scale.

You are so right. My whole silent film collection! Didn't he think that I had them in asbestos for a REASON? He went in, opened the chest, and SNEEZED!

Um, Ham, those old films are on nitro-celluloid. As in nitroglycerin. As in the entire chest exploded and set my 1930's poster collection on fire...
* Ham murmurs that it certainly sounds upsetting. *
And then he had the nerve to be angry because I was upset! I give up. No more men for me... Ham, thanks for listening. I feel a lot better. Here's a scale for the tea.

I plan to spend the holidays cowering in a cave to recover from:- Teaching summer school
- Taking an overload in the fall semester (i.e. 4 months of overtime)
- Taking a screenwriting class, and
- Setting up a business office.
My family can set up christmas tree, do cooking etc. I will provide Amazon.com gift certificates...

I recently attended the Long Beach Celtic Festival, and got to hear (in order of appearance) Celtic Spring, Wicked Tinkers, Gaelic Storm, and Wolfstone. Click HERE for my photos! Here's a portion of my review (from my blog):

Celtic Spring: A one-family Celtic festival all by themselves, this Dad plus 5 offspring play traditional-style Irish and Scottish fiddle numbers, accompanied by bodhran drum. They also do traditional Irish dancing -- sometimes WHILE playing the fiddle! The dancing was excellent; the music is good, but not as polished as that of the other bands.
Wicked Tinkers: This is the only band whose CD I owned before attending the festival. They play Scottish traditional music, with pipes and drums -- and digeridoo, and Irish horn. They did not need amplification; they got it anyway, and just about blew the festival into the harbor... but it's all good stuff. Loved their "Bog" set, among others. They are definitely the most crowd-oriented of the bunch; one of the members actually jumped off the stage and went out into the crowd to get people dancing. Woohoo!
I should note that while their CDs contain some quieter numbers, they played strictly loud and energetic jigs, strathspeys, and reels at the festival. During their second set, they invited some local amateur champion Irish dancers onto the stage for a set of jigs. VERY good!
Gaelic Storm: An Irish-style band, with both Irish expatriate and American members, they have the widest musical range of the headline bands. A band that started here in Southern California, and clearly the crowd favorite, they played traditional Irish and Scottish dance music, original songs, and some traditional/pop hybrid numbers. Their stage presence was good, but not as strong as that of Wicked Tinkers.
Wolfstone: ...They are my personal favorite band out of this bunch, and they plus Wicked Tinkers are why I went to the festival in the first place. Of course, I took advantage of the opportunity to buy one of those elusive CDs!
Their music was superb, a wild blend of Highland jigs and reels with hard rock. They played (among others) two of my favorite numbers, "Queen of Argyle" and "Noose and the Gillies". And yes, they are the band who got me dancing and thereby was my knee wrecked. It was worth it.
However, the crowd did not respond nearly as well to them as to Gaelic Storm or to Wicked Tinkers. I think that's because the stage performance, while splendid musically, was not as visually engaging as those of the other two. Their speaking accents, as well, are harder for American ears to decipher. And when I asked one of the members when their next CD was coming out (their last was released in 2002), he said (approximately, allowing for accent) that there would perhaps, maybe, be a new CD in 2005. No doubt a question he was tired of answering, poor man, because it's not what the fans (including me) want to hear...
Well, and well. I'll just have to continue collecting their old albums, I guess. |
