I don't know but my belive is they are people who have died but do not want to leave because of something that has happened to them, or because they can not let go of the things they had.
To start with, I believe that the energy in everything is changed and tainted (not necessarily in a bad way) by everything it comes in contact with. The energy of a rock, for example, would take on properties and the essence of the rock.
People are no different. The energy that fills us, our spirit if you will, takes on qualities of us.
I believe that ghosts are the energy left over when people die. The type of ghost would depend not only on how a person dies, but also how strongly their energy took on their essence while they were alive.
That's my idea anyway.

May those who love us love us And those who don't love us May God turn their hearts, And if He doesn't turn their hearts, May He turn their ankles, So we'll know them by their limping.
Since I believe we are energy and as such, energy cannot be destroyed. I believe that ghosts are the energy sources trying to find their way to the next level. Some are evil and some are not. My aunt was good - Anna was and is not

I have no insights into the true nature of ghosts. As in all things, ghosts are something allowed into our perception by the author of our existence- God. We are intended to make what we will of these things and glean the lessons thereof to furthur our growth. I do, however, believe that those nefarious creatures of deceit, the fallen angels, can make us believe just about anything in order to lure us away from truth and comunion with our creator and that if posing as ghosts is percieved to be effective in acheiving these ends, that's what they will do. Demons are quite capable of posing as ghosts if it suites their purposes.
To me there are different kinds, you have the ones that interact and ones that is like a movie clip that plays the same thing out over and over and over. I believe the latter ones are just imprints through energy. I believe the others, the ones that slam doors, turn off lights, walk different paths, etc... are lost souls, have unfinished businesses or died early or tragically. I personally love discussing them and reading about them.
With all the ghost or spirit hunter on tv now, there must be something out there. Guess I'm just have to become one to understand. But I will fight all the way. I am in no hurry to see the "otherside"............
I just saw a book down at my local bookseller that had nothing but photos of Ghosts and other sort of supernatural things like faeries, etc. I I get the chance I'll see if I can get the title and author the nxt time I am at the store.

Ghosts are one of the most fascinating subjects to discuss. It is obvious that they are real. There would not be this much evidence if they were not. That is just simple logic. So what are they? Like many people, I believe they are basically left over energy, since energy is never destroyed, it only changes forms. It does not seem logical at all that a ghost can think in any way. So it seems the vast majority of ghosts are doing the same motion over and over, which would be consistent with left over energy. I've heard it said before that a violent ghost is doing the same, and that live people basically just get in the way. It is not as if the ghost is doing something violent just because you are there. This may or may not be true. It could be possible that the energy of the ghost is interacting with the energy a live person is producing (we all know that each of us produces energy from the electrolytes in our bodies). It may also be possible that the reason ghosts seem more prevalent at a spot where some tragedy occurred is because the energy level of the live people involved in the original event was very high at the time, leaving a larger "energy footprint" than normal.
