In 1002, on the Hill of Tara, in Co. Meath Brian Boru became Ard Ri or High King of Ireland.  Brian Boru was born in 940 A.D. in Killaloe, on the west bank of the Shannon, where there is still an Iron Age ringfort known as Beal Boru Co. Clare.  Brian Boru was a skilled warrior and a well-educated man who could read and write Greek and Latin.  Before he became the first High King of Ireland, the country was made up of many small kingdoms, who were often at war with each other. Brian Boru set about bringing these tribes together into a law-abiding people.  This lasted for aver a decade until 1014, when the Vikings from Scandinavia sent a new force to defeat the High King.  At seventy-three of age, Brian Boru took up his sword and fought the savage and Battle of Clontarf on Good Friday, 23 April 1014, where he met his death after he and his men wer victorious in driving the Danes out of Ireland.

I enjoyed this little bit of history Maggie! :D

We watched Darby O'Gill and The Little People yesterday in honor of St. Patrick's Day - and the throne of Brian Boru the High King of Ireland was one of the treasures, along with the pots and chests of gold,  held by King Brian and the Leprechauns!

(It is also fun to watch Sean Connery acting in his very first movie!;) :D  (d)
