My family loves to get out of town as often as we can on long weekends and sometimes on regular weekends too
I thought it would be fun to share our favorite destinations...
We usually choose a State park with either cabins or a lodge to stay in. (We have also camped in a tent a few times, but have decided it's way too much work. Our favorites so far are the Georgia State Parks.. We've been to Unicoi, Red Top Mountain and Indian Springs there.. They have all been really nice. Have been to some in KY, WV, VA, TN and FLA too.. (I guess Fla is a little too far for us, for a weekend , but I love it there in the gulf. )
Anyway, does anyone have any favorites they wouldn't mind sharing?

One of my favorite areas is the Finger Lakes area of New York State. With close to 100 wineries in the area, waterfalls galore to hike to, boating on the any of the lakes, museums, incredible scenery, some of the best fishing on the east coast, Watkins Glen Raceway, The Corning Factory and Museum and on and on.
I prefer to stay at B&Bs but there are many hotels and motels around.
May the Irish hills caress you. May her lakes and rivers bless you. May the luck of the Irish enfold you. May the blessings of Saint Patrick behold you.
Virtually anywhere in the mountains NC, SC, TN, north GA and VA. Very fond of Asheville, Hendersonville area of NC. Close second is area around Boone, NC. Great Smoky Mountain National Park is a nice place but WAAAAY too crowded.
My favorite place to camp for a weekend is Holly Bay National Park, just west of London, KY. It is part of the Daniel Boone National Forest. It is on Laurel Lake, great for boating.
Another favorite place to head out for a few days is the Gatlinburg, TN. area.We own a timeshare there, so when we're there, it is in a condo.
when i lived closer to it, i used to love travelling up to Toronto. from PA, it would take about 6 hours to get there. i used to stay at a b&b in uxbridge, ON for only $30/night u.s.
toronto is a great city, with so much to see and do (including the outlying areas). i don't think i could ever get tired of going there.

I love the mountains too, and just an hour's drive from where I live is the Cradle Mountain national park, in the Tasmanian highlands there are many hikes there from 2 hour to seven day walks.
I've a couple of piccies in my gallery of it's beauty. You would think you are in Scotlands' Highlands - or the next best thing
Most anywhere in the Rocky Mountains. We spend a lot of time in Rocky Mountain National Park. The mountains are breathtaking

WOW, Thank you everyone for all the responses.. I haven't been north or west much, I'll probably have to take a week's vacation go go either place, but would love to go to Canada or New England or Any of the places you mention out west. I will definately check out the links.. And, that's a really pretty sunset at Geneva Lake
My favorite place to run to is my place up in Jefferson NC! I almost cry when i have to leave. The mist rolls in over the MTS in the afternoon.
Annabelle,
I know exactly how you feel! Our favorite place is up in Jackson, NH, in the White Mountains. It's incredibly beautiful up there, and peaceful, but just a short drive (10 minutes) puts you into North Conway and lots of Outlets, small shops, a train station, great restaurants, etc..... We can't wait to go up there again! You wouldn't believe the STARS at night--so many more than we can see here on the Coast!! My heart always stays up in the mountains. I took this pic while standing on our balcony in Jackson...
( Well shoot! It says I can't upload that type of file. It's a 5 .jpg pic. Help!!)
Okay, well, just imagine white mist hanging in the creases between three mountains. I'll see what I can do to bring it here for you.

This was posted in the Thread that Derfel started about Avalon (this Forum, my reply on page 4). It's what I was trying to show you all about the White Mountains!
It works!! Dreamer1
