It wasn't wanting to leave the Union as much as is was standing up for their States rights. Yes they split, they seceded and their name was the Confederate States of AMERICA. The WHOLE country lost, not just the south. Yes the Union won the physical war but the whole country lost something. families were torn apart, material wealth was lost, the social and moral fabric of the country was damaged. It took a long time to heal those wounds. I dare say that some wounds are still not healed.
I see by your statements that you have not had the privilege to serve as a member of the armed forces. As a soldier (over 30years) I learned to respect my enemy, for he like I, is a soldier upholding what he believes to be true and just. Who's to say he's wrong and I'm right. Just because the mighty vanquishes his enemy doesn't mean it was right. It just means he was stronger than his enemy.
When you're in battle you destroy your enemy. When the battles over, and you have won, you respect the dead (the enemy as well as friendly) and treat them with proper dignity. You tend to the wounded and protect them as long as they abide by the rules otherwise they get to go to a Prisoner compound sooner that later.
It's called RESPECT. If you don't understand that there is no use trying to explain it to you.

QUOTE | Following your logic, we should have monuments to the Germans and japaneese in Kentucky. To go into battle, it is a given that you have to be brave. Winners get statues, loosers just get dead. As Patton said, "You don't win a war by dieing for your country. You win a war by making that other poor dumb bastard die for HIS country."

I voted NO!
Bill Gates is a good man and does a lot of great things; but, the GUI was invented by a think tank at Xerox (not Bill Gates) and wasn't copyrighted so that it could be used by anyone to allow the furtherment of the art/science of computing.
I say give him Knighthood when he has solved ALL the problems that WINDOWS has caused............
That's my thoughts and I'm sticking to them....

I had relatives that fought on both sides and I'm sure they believed in what they were fighting for...... My father spent 20 years in the US Navy and I spent a total of 31 years in the reserve and active US Army. I think that there should be a memorial that commemorates ALL Civil War Soldiers. And it should be funded as any other monument. Not all National monuments in Washington, D.C. are government funded. Some were build with private funds, some with a combination of private and government funding and some solely government funded. The revisionists need to stop changing history to please some politically correct agenda. The Civil War was about many things but most importantly it WAS about States Rights. A major US Army post is named after a Confederate General and that is Fort Hood in Texas. My father is buried in a cemetery in southern Illinois and there are several graves for Confederate State of America Soldiers. The markers provided by the Veterans Administration and every holiday, such as Memorial Day and Veterans Day the graves are decorated the same as any of the other veterans.

Bless me Father:
"Bless me Father for I have sinned. I have not been to confession for six months. On top of that, I've been with a loose woman."
The priest sighs. "Is that you, little tommy O'Shaughnessy?"
"Yes, Father, 'tis I."
"And who might be the woman you were with?"
"I shan't be tellin' you, Father. It would ruin her reputation."
"Well, Tommy, I'm bound to find out sooner or later, so you may as well tell me now. Was it Brenda O'Malley?"
"I cannot say."
"Was it Patricia Fitzgerald?"
"I'll never tell."
"Was it Bridget O'Shanter?"
"I'm sorry, but I'll not name her."
"Was it Cathy O'Dell?"
"My lips are sealed."
"Was it Fiona Mallory, then?"
"Please, Father, I cannot tell you."
The priest sighs in frustration. "You're a steadfast lad, Tommy O'Shaughnessy, and I admire that. But, you've sinned, and you must atone. Be off with you now."
Tommy walks back to the pew. His friend, Sean, slides over and whispers, "What'd you get?"
Tommy replied, "Five more good leads!"

Indentification Through Anatomy:
Paddy, an Irishman, died in a fire and was burnt pretty badly so the morgue required someone to identify the body.
His two best friends, Seamus and Sean , were sent for.
Seamus went in first and the mortician pulled back the sheet. Seamus took a look at the body and said, "Yup, he's burnt pretty bad. It could be him. Roll him over." So the mortician rolled him over. Seamus looked down and said, "Nope, that ain't Paddy."
The mortician thought that was rather strange, and then he brought Sean in to identify the body. Sean took a look at the corpse and said, "Gee, he's burnt really bad. Will you roll him over?" The mortician rolled the body on to its front and Sean looked down for a moment before saying, "No, it isn't Paddy."
The mortician, puzzled, asked, "How can you tell?"
Sean replied, "Well, Paddy had two arseholes."
"What do you mean? No-one has two arseholes," said the mortician.
"Yup, everyone knew he had two arseholes. Cause every time we went into town, folks would say, 'Here comes Paddy with dem two arseholes!'"

An Irishman's first baseball game.
An Irishman moves to the USA and finally attends his first baseball game.
The first batter approached the batters box, took a few swings and then hit a double. Everyone was on their feet screaming "Run, Run."
The next batter hit a single and the Irishman listened as the crowd again cheered "RUN, RUN."
The Irishman enjoyed the game and began screaming with the fans. The fifth batter came up and four balls went by. The umpire called "walk" and the batter started his slow trot to first base.
The Irishman stood up and screamed, "R-R-Run ye bastard, run!
The people around him began laughing. Embarrassed, the Irishman sat back down. A friendly fan noted the man's embarrassment, leaned over explained, "He can't run, he's got four balls."
The Irishman stood up and screamed, "Walk with pride, laddie, walk with pride."

The Ladies' Night Out
Three Scotswomen, all neighbors, are walking home at night and find a Scotsman passed out partially under a wagon. His upper body is under the wagon, and they can't see who it is. However, they would like to help him get home.
The first woman looks under his kilt and says "That's not my husband."
The second woman looks under his kilt and says "That's not my husband, either."
The third woman looks under his kilt and says "Why, he's not even from this village!"

If I remember, Chicago was never short of Celtic activities. I can remember on Sundays at noon on WGN-TV there was an amateur hour show and it always had several Irish Step Dancers tapping away.
And I remember the old Chicago Stock Yards Kiltie Pipe Band.........
I'm not from Chicago nor did I really grow up there. My Mother is from the south side of Chicago and we would go back to my grandmothers most summers and also stay there when my dad went overseas.
Still have tons of relatives in the area. Haskell Harr, a famous percussion instructor taught music at Thornton High School. Well, I'm drifting...
Thank you for the URL for the chicago Celtic Festival.
I'll have to get my cousins to go and check it out.

I prefer my meat and game to be fresh.....
I couldn't figure out the need to let the flesh age... I guess I'm just not a connisiour of fine cuisine.
I know some people who wouldn't a eat fresh kill. I guess I spent to much time in survival training and living in the woods/jungle. I eaten a lot of game animals and not so game animals and critters.
