If you read the Scottish press, there is virtually no influence from the movie Braveheart. Few make reference to the selling of Scotland by the "Parcel of Rogues". What motivates most is a desire for Scotland to be able to steer it's own course in the world. While England is busy privatizing the health service, Scotland is trying to keep the NHS intact. While the UK has a nuclear arsenal (which it maintains in Scotland), Scotland wants to be totally nuclear free. Many in Scotland opposed the UK's involvement with the US wars in the mid-east. In short there are myriad issues driving the desire of many Scots to break away. Not the least is the basic fact that Scotland is a very liberal country with left of center views while the UK is much more conservative politically. Scotland feels that their voice is not heard in Westminster.

Yes, the banks have come out in favor of the UK. Remember that they (the UK banks) were bailed out by Westminster after gross mismanagement caused an economic melt down. As long as suckling pigs are getting milk, they are not going to turn loose. But many folks feel it's time for the people to get some bacon out of the deal.

Scotland (many, we'll see after the vote how many) wants to join the world of nations as a free and independent country that is not subservient to anyone else's ambitions.

As of Dec. 20, 2013, Winamp will be no longer. sad.gif If you have a copy on your PC, it will still work but it will no longer be available for download or be updated or supported. AOL (who bought it from Nullsoft) has pulled the plug. RIP to a truly great player.

One note: the last CD you sent me was addressed to the wrong PO Box, 503. My correct PO Box is 502.

Again, thank you very much.

I see that for now I am King. Didn't really do anything, just let the previous king attack me and get his a** kicked back down the ladder. Congratulations Gandolf on your tactical brilliance. beer_mug.gif thumbs_up.gif A toast to you sir.

I haven't said too much lately as, quite outside of this game and website, I have not been doing too well lately with my health. But did stop by when I was told I was to be attacked by the Great Gandolf and his flunky Olorin. I see that Gandolf got the VERY short end of the stick and his flunky turned tail and ran before the battle even started.

We all need to do our part to help produce this new fuel. tongue.gif

Scots scientists create car biofuel from whisky by-products
August 18th, 2010 in Technology / Energy

Whisky lovers have another excuse to enjoy a dram -- scientists in Scotland on Tuesday unveiled a biofuel to help power cars developed from the by-products of the distillation process.

Researchers at Edinburgh Napier University have developed the biofuel and filed a patent for the product, which they said could be used to fuel ordinary cars without any special adaptations.

The biofuel, which has been developed during a two-year research project, uses the two main by-products from the whisky production process.

These are "pot ale", the liquid from the copper stills, and the spent grains called "draff", as the base to produce butanol which can then be used as fuel.

"The new biofuel is made from biological material which has been already generated," said Martin Tangney, who is leading the research.

"Theoretically it could be used entirely on its own but you would have to find a company to distribute it."

He added the most likely way the biofuel would be used was by blending five or 10 percent of the product with petrol or diesel.

"Five or 10 percent means less oil which would make a big, big difference," he said.

The biofuel "potentially offers new revenue on the back of one Scotland's biggest industries," added Tangney.

Richard Dixon, the Scotland director of environmental campaign group WWF, praised the new product, saying unlike other biofuels it could be made without causing "massive environmental damage to forests and wildlife.

"Whisky-powered cars could help Scotland avoid having to use those forest-trashing biofuels."

Mike, please accept my sincere condolences. Know that your mother is now in the peace and joy that is heaven. I will continue to pray for you and your family as you go through this difficult time of adjustment. Talk to each other and share the best of memories of your mother and know that her love for all of you will continue to be felt as you go forward into the future.

I was listening to Best of Highlander Radio 9:30 this morning and Great Big Sea's "Concerning Charlie Horse" came on. It was very garbled, to the point that had I not known the song, I wouldn't have been able to tell what it was. Don't know which end the problem was on; I reconnected and everything was OK, but by that time the next song was playing so I don't know if the reconnecting fixed it or the song is truly garbled.

While this find is fascinating and shows the far ranging travels of people in that time period, the mummies in question are not Celts. They may be related to the racial stock that later became Celts, but the date of 3800 years before present puts them 600 years earlier than the genesis of Celtic culture at Hallstat, dated to 3200 years before present. The Hallstat culture is consider to be proto-Celtic. It developed into the La Tene culture which saw development of what could be called Celts.

The forerunner of Hallstat is generally accepted as the Urnfield culture. The Urnfield culture merged with a group of people migrating from the steppes called the Battle Axe People. Little is known about the Battle Axe People, but it is likely that the mummies are from this group.

A few days ago, the temperature hit 102 degrees with dew points as high as 82 degrees. Today is in the mid 70s with widespread thunder storms. We have been about 5 inches behind for the year in rainfall. These storms are slow moving and appear to be trying to make up the deficit all at one time. Saw a map of rainfall totals and hope that Ogdenmusic got to his ark in time. Apex had one of the higher totals.

If you are interested, here are the lyrics

It Suits Me Well

(By Sandy Denny. U.F.O. Music, Inc. © 1972)

My name is Jan the gypsy
I travel the land.
There are no chains about me
I am me own man.
I can tell a fair old story which I'm sure ain't no surprise
Of the places I have been, oh,
And they ain't no lies.

I've never had a proper home,
Not one like yours is.
I've nearly always had a caravan
With 'orses.
And I know you won't believe me
Though it is the truth to tell
That the living it is hard, oh,
But it suits me well.

I am I traveller of the seas,
I am a sailor.
The ocean has been good to me,
She ain't no jailor.
I can tell a fair old story which I'm sure ain't no surprise
Of the places I have sailed, oh,
And they ain't no lies.

I've never had a garden,
Or a place with windows.
I stand upon the salty deck,
And feel the wind blow.
And I know you won't believe me
Though it is the truth to tell
That the living it is hard, oh,
But it suits me well.

My mother was a fireeater,
'Fore she desert us.
So when I was only severn years old
I joined the circus.
And I can tell a fair old story which I'm sure ain't no surprise
Of the places we have played, oh,
And it ain't no lies.

I've never had no money,
And no hope to get none.
I can always get a penny,
When there is good reason.
And I know you won't believe me
Though it is the truth to tell
That the living it is hard, oh,
But it suits me well.

Mike, tell the lawyers to burn a new you-know-what in the folks who mis-read the MRI.

The husband of my wife's best friend went to the doctor for months and was told he had allergies. He finally went to another doctor who found inoperable stage 4 lung cancer that had spread to his brain. His brother died from lung cancer a few years before; they had both been exposed to agent orange in Viet Nam and the doctors said the kind of cancer they have came from that. He is in remission for now, but they say it is only a matter of time. Had the first doctor found it when he first had symptoms, it might have been a different story. I think they should go after the first doctor, but they don't want to sue.

I would simply say hate is what got us here, it will not get us out. And yes, sterotyping an entire group from the actions of a fraction is prejudice, bigotry and hatred. If one doesn't like that label, I'm sorry, but it doesn't change what you are.

I stopped in for a moment to see what was happening; I see it is still the same old hate filled diatribe, so I'll take another break and ease my blood pressure.

NASA has abandoned plans to return to the Moon but videogamers can explore the lunar landscape with a free new online game released by the US space agency.

"Moonbase Alpha" allows players to join an exploration team in a futuristic 3D settlement on the south pole of the Moon.

"In Moonbase Alpha, you assume the exciting role of an astronaut working to further human expansion and research," NASA said in an explanation of the game.

"Returning from a research expedition, you witness a meteorite impact that cripples the life support capability of the settlement.

"With precious minutes ticking away, you and your team must repair and replace equipment in order to restore the oxygen production to the settlement," NASA said

To accomplish their mission, players of the "first-person explorer" game use an interactive command center, lunar rover and mobile robotic repair units.

"Proper use and optimal allocation of their available resources are key to the team's overall success," NASA said.

NASA said the game is designed to "engage and educate students about agency technologies, job opportunities and the future of space exploration."

Moonbase Alpha can be played by one or up to six players. NASA said it is a precursor to a planned NASA-based "multiplayer online game project."

The game is available at www.moonbasealphagame.com

Good to hear that they are getting started quickly. Hopefully, they will knock this out soon. Chemo is not fun, but your mother should make it without too much trouble with such a supportive family.
