After reading my last post I realized that perhaps my family was thrown out of Scotland for some reason and that is the cause for all the secrecy. Hoping it was one of those Ellis Island things where everyones name got messed up. I have recently started a geanology and have quite a way to go, But and I use But sparingly, my Scottish heritage is first.

Later days all

As a native Scot - I was taught that anyone can wear the Royal Stewart Tartan (the red one which appears so often on shortbread tins etc).

If you can trace your family back to its port of entry into the country the family from Scotland immigrated to - then it should be fairly simple to find out where they came from - and if they are not part of a clan (and a great many Scots were NEVER part of a clan!;) then you may be entitled to wear what is called a 'District' tartan. :)

Ellis Island (and the entry points for Australia, Canada, NZ and South Africa) ALL added to the confusion about names - they wrote down what they THINK they heard the person state as their name!  Often this was totally different to the ACTUAL name! :D

Out of curiosity - what does SCA stand for?  It is not an organisation that I've come across before anywhere.

Catriona Thanks you are a wealth of information. I am searching for the point of entry now. I may spend a few bucks with the different online geanology groups to help get reasearch ott to a jump start. :D

Have great day!

::viking Catriona the SCA is a group that does Rennisance Reinactments, as close as the real thing as possible.
When KK asked his question, my first thought was of the regional tartans.  Now my question is. Is the word plaid or kilt the one that first ment blanket?  ::confused

The Plaid was a large piece of tartan cloth used as many things, including a blanket...  If you look at the uniform of a highland regiment, particularly the pipers,  it is now the name given to that 'shawl' like piece of tartan over his shoulder!

Although some Americans call tartan material 'plaid' - ie like in those loud golf trousers beloved of so many people...  :D it is a misnomer.  The pattern is called tartan - not plaid.

::viking Thank you for clearing that up. Though I'm sure I'll still dress my grandkids and hubby in plaids. I can just see the reaction, I would get here in Michigan, if I went into a fabric store, and asked to see their tartans.  ::funny  Maybe I will do that.

Try the online store at www.tartans.com (d) . You might be able to find something there. :;):  (b)
