Does anyone do "extra" stuff at church? What I mean is, do you teach sunday school, sing in the choir, sweep the building during the week?
Overall, do you do more than fill a pew on Sundays?

As for me, and my wife, we are very involved with the teens. I teach a middle school sunday school class. And yes, it is like herding cats or trying to nail jell-o to a tree!

Share away! thumbs_up.gif

I enjoy singing in the choir and occasionally sing a solo. I love music and I thank the Lord for giving us such a wonderful means of expressing our love for Him!

Our church is "Mobile" so we basically use one of the schools in the area to have church in. Two weeks out of the month I drive the truck with a 30ft trailer loaded with all the church equipment to the school and unload it. So if I do not show up neither does the church. The church founders wanted the church to be mobile as a ministry then to be located in a buidling.

Actually, I teach a sunday school class of little ones. It's so fun! They love me, and I'm getting really attached to them and the class! I'm starting to really love coming to church! biggrin.gif

I love it, they don't judge!

Wow, Adam! I am so impressed! It s so good to see someone your age doing something for the Lord! I know most kids that age (and I am speaking from personal experience here! wink.gif ) are very self-absorbed and not mature enough to do something like that! Thank you, lil bro! And believe me, your service does not go unnoticed! smile.gif

I have the privelege of teaching each week in our small fellowship, my children provide the music with their talents, but I do love visiting our interstate church, it's a nice change to just sit and enjoy the teaching of others.

I'm the part-time layman Minister of Music. note.gif

My wife helps take care of the babies.

We're a small congregation, about 200-225 in attendance. My choir is usually about 20-25 on Sundays, and about 30 for the Christmas musical. We'll do a mix of post-1980's 'praise' singing along with the 'old standard' hymns of the 1800-1900's, and then throw in an occasional liturgical piece from time to time.

We started 8 years ago after so many of us were angry at "corporate" religion:
- Rome telling Catholics what to believe and how to act
- Nashville telling Southern Baptists what to believe and how to act
- One national group of Presbyterians telling the other group what to believe and how to act
- etc., etc., etc.

While we all came from a Christian heritage, we strive to refrain from "doing things because that's how we've done it for 200 years" and re-examine the life and the actions of the living Word of God - Jesus Christ.

- Is it mandatory that you pass an offering plate during every service?
- Is it mandatory that you serve Communion during every service?
- Is it mandatory that you have an Invitation Hymn at the end of every service?
- etc., etc., etc.

Did Jesus do all these "things" every time He spoke to a group?

The actions of the Holy Spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control. These are the things we need to be concerned with, and not some goofy heated arguement over whether women can say a prayer during the service, or whether it's OK for a guy in choir to actually have an earring, etc. Corporate religion has become so engulfed in man-made rules and regulations that I fear we're losing the Message of Good News that Jesus tried so hard to show us.

Oops! I didn't mean to preach a sermon. unsure.gif

note.gif note.gif I am an Eucharistic Minister at the Catholic Church that I attend. Also, my husband and I are Cursillistas having made our Cursillos in the Fall of 1998. Through this ministry we evangeilize our various environments, including our families. I also have been involved with the choir, and the folk choir as well. Our ministries bring much joy to our lives.

Yes it is alot of fun!
Starting in March, I will be starting a series of classes based on the book, Walking with Frodo, by Sarah Arthur. These are devotionals based on the Lord of the Rings: connecting scenes from the books and movies to Christianity. I am looking forward to it!

Since September I've begun working in our church library, keeping it open during set hours before worship services & helping the librarian enter books into the computerized data system. She 'doesn't do computers' so while she catagorizes the books and puts the check-out cards & pockets in the books I enter info & print out labels for the books.
And I created a web site for our church several months ago, thinking it would be a good way for the church to make its presence known to those new to the community who use the Internet to see what's in the area. I maintain the site, updating it frequently. Its my way of contributing to the church; I don't have a lot of money to give but this is something I can do that will make a difference!

During the summer I teach vacation bible school. I usually take a week off to help. I go to a messianic congregation (jewish and gentile believers) and during the various holiday celebrations I and my family help out. Like last year we were servers for the Passover seder. We had about 400 people there. A lot of people from area churches came and they really enjoyed it. During the Highland game season my family have volunteered to represent our Clan Society in the Sunday morning service.

Our church is about to begin a building plan, to construct what they call a Family Life Center with classroom space, meeting rooms, and a gym... we're having a business meeting this Wed. night with a presentation about the specifics, followed by a question & answer time.
What's nice is, this kind of project brings people out of the woodwork who usually just attend services & classes. Its nice to see people volunteering to do everything from make calls and visit to create a brochure for the program to distribute to church members. I've volunteered to be on the Publicity Committee and its actually fun working with these 5 other people - we're getting to know each other better, and helping to make a great idea become reality!

SB,
our church built an "Family Life Center" like that, about a year ago. Attendance exploded after that! We see people from around town that never came before!
The building is now in constant use, and that is the way it should be.

Wow, that's very encouraging to hear it made such a difference in your attendance there!
We lack young couples, both those who are newly married (20ish) and those who are getting into their 30's and have young children. The few we do have were very vocal during the early talks about this Family Life Center & were sure that it would bring in more people like them; we hope that it will.

Thankfully the building will also have a lot to offer our older members, and that was what made them so enthusiastically approve the preliminary plans last week.

I try to help out where ever possible. I usher mostly. This past year though, my wife and I were used by God to help a man of God who was going through the test of his life. God is good because God did restore this Pastor and is still in the process of restoring him.

I teach Religion class every wedensday(CCD) night to 6th graders. My husband and I usually do this as a team, but he is involved with the Engineers Fellowship for our church.

I have planed to help out with the RCIA program, but that depends on my school load.

Our family as a whole is quite involved in Church, my girls are Altar Servers, and mu 8 year old son is looking forward to that. He is working on his 1st Communion for May 1st. He recently received his Light of Christ medal for Scouts, and he had fun earning that.

yep, we are proud "Holy Rollers!"

I bet that dust made you cough! That's what happens to me when I get the books off the top shelf - *hack hack hack* yucky.gif Makes me sneeze too!

We're about halfway through the process of entering all our books into a computer system that keeps a record of them & who donated them. So far we have about 3,000 books in our library! Its quite a collection but unfortunately there are probably only 10 or 15 people who come in to check out books. I'm very pleased that more children than ever are coming in on Wednesday evenings when I'm there... reading is such a good 'habit' to encourage in kids!

Previously I posted that I teach middle school age kids for Sunday School. As of the end of this month, I will be stepping down from that position. I've done it for three solid years and frankly, I am burned out!
It has had it's joys, but also it's pains too. I wish I could say that I reached all or even some of the kids, but I just don't see that as being the case.
Recently I find it so hard to even walk into the room for class, on sunday mornings. We have been using the LOTR to examine our own walk with God. Some of them get it. Most just want to watch the movies. It seems like every sunday I have to keep telling them that, "No. We cannot watch a battle scene today!" Or whatever.
Like I said - I am burned out.

In the past few years I was very involved in choir at my church. The catholic music is calm and serene. Upon my move to a baptist church I tried to get involved in the choir but the music just doesn't make me want to sing. Hoping to take care of the nursery responsiblities in the very late future. Sometime after the age of 60.tongue.gif
