Indianapolis (aka Peckeryland) got five inches of snow, and are expected to get up to one inch of ICE. WooHoo. What's it like where you are??

We are having about the same exact thing here. I am about 1 1/2 hours due East of you, about 50 due North of Dayton, Ohio.

Over here in this part of Germany it's getting pretty cold, a bit snow, actually freezing rain sad.gif and a lot more snow expected for the next few days. unsure.gif

Gosh It's lovely grey raining and a warm temp of 40 right now here in Bubba Hell of Perry Georgia, which is 2 hours south of Atlanta. Wonderful Scottish weather. Very dark! I come alive in this type of weather. I know I'm weird. If I was up in NC mts I'd feel like I'd died and went to heaven.
Going to rain here for the next couple of days, yea!
Plants need the rain ya see.

It's cold and nasty in Cincinnati, Ohio. We got 6.5 inches ofsnow yesterday, and about an inch of ice on top of that. The temp has now reached 27 and is expected to get to 41 by this afternoon, with a touch of rain. Then it is to drop back down tomorrow, and then more freezing rain, and snow. unsure.gif

Had about 8 inches of snow this morning in Baltimore and still coming down. My normal 1 hour commute to DC for work took 2 hours. It's supposed to turn into freezing rain later on today and should make the drive back home FUN. dry.gif

Kinda cool here this morning, lower 80's Farenheit (26.6-27 for you Celsius folks), sunny, dry, nice breeze ruffling the palm fronds. Same thing expected until about April.

It's now -33*C (-27.4*F) and there's months of snow everywhere. -46*C (-50.8*F) with the windchill. sad.gif Frickin' fridgid. It's supposed to be around -6*C (21.2*F) this time of year.

Brutal.

The ol' Supertruck wouldn't even fire up this morning, so Ange had to drive me to work, which took about an hour, because people around here seem to forget how to drive in the winter every damn year.

Now, that IS cold...no problem if you have the time to sit near the warm fire-place; but no fun at all if you have to drive to work!

It really seems to be a phenomenon that with the first few snow flakes falling most people seemingly forget all they ever had learnt about driving. It's the same thing here and it's very annoying!

But no sunlight for two weeks gets depressing.. Yesterday was sunny with a breeze and I was able to relax in the hot tub. Today is not that sunny.

Sunny here. T-shirt weather. Front and back doors open. The Weather guessers think it might be a little cloudy tomorrow, possibly drizzle a little, then back in to the 70's.

Since Sunday I have been surrounded by about 3 inches of ice. (Right outside Louisville, KY) Cincinatti got the snow, we got the ice. Go figure. I could not get out of my parking lot yesterday, so I nissed work.

What makes it bad is it got warm here yesterday, a lot of the ice melted and drained to where my car was located, and froze all around it. I had to claw my way out this morning.

Posted by: barddas 27-Jan-2004, 10:59 AM
Sorry about all the ice, Mary. We're only about an hour and a half away from each other and got lots of snow.
But, yesterday it got warm here too! Up to like 35-40degrees! Which caused things to begin to melt quickly. Not to mention the amount of fog that was produced because of the evaporation. It was a reall ywindy and eerie night. Today it is snowing a bit, but I can see some blue skys to the west! So, Mary it looks like it is getting better your way...

OK, now this is big for Alabama... We're getting snow! Well, Flurries anyway. I thought someone was flicking cigarette ash at me this morning when I stepped out of my car, but then I realized that I had seen this white form of precipitation once... a long time ago in a land called Ohio. There was more of it there, but still felt somewhat the same.

It did indeed drop 30+ degrees overnight, and its still falling. We might be in for a good old southern ice storm by the weekend.

Well, more of the same expected until about April or so.

It has warmed up into the 90s now. Hot and really windy, but the sky is sorta hazy today. On the way home last night I noticed that they have started harvesting sugar cane outside of the town I live in. It is not uncommon for the stubble to burn off, that and the dust whipped up by the trade winds makes the air hazy.

It is suppossed to be illegal here now to burn off the fields, the folks that own the ones that were cut yesterday usually just turn that under, but the stuff is really dry and it doesn't take much to get a blaze going. And there are folks that still like to see a fire that is about twenty feet high and a few miles long. Those are pretty spectacular.

There are some huge fields on the Interamerican Highway on the way into the city which used to be owned, or sold to a large, European food conglomerate. I remember driving one night about ten years ago, and seeing a fire in the stubble that looked like it stretched about five or six kilometers. Awesome is an understatement. Think about that next time y'all are sucking on a 'lifesaver', harping about the evils of smoking etc.

In the far west of France, in a beautiful but savage place called Brittany, there's a town that faces the sea with a bay at its feets where well-known sailors are trying to break records like Jules Verne's Trophy. There I live. Today after a calm but foggy morning and a sunny afternoon, the evening brought us back strong wind and rain, if I open the window I can feel the taste of salt on my lips...People say that you can have the four seasons in one day in Brittany, it was the case today... wink.gif

Hey, Leo! Are you near the ocean? From my limited experience in the tropics (Hawaii, St. Thomas, St. Maarten) the ocean breezes seem to cool things off a bit.

Everywhere in Panama is close to the ocean, either one or the other. The country is long and skinny. I live on a Peninsula that sticks down into the Pacific. From the house the ocean is about 25 kilometers. From work, five kilometers. And yes, we get those strong northerly trade winds during the dry season, so that helps a lot to keep the place feeling cool. Of course, if you are out in the sun it doesn't make much difference since we are only between 7 and 8 degrees north. Sunlight is intense.

Well, I don't have to worry about that (the kids moving out) for a few years. But, as I have over a half an acre of land, I can't see going without the riding mower. A reel mower would be more peaceful, but would take me forever.

Richard, I couldn't agree more! I hate having to listen to those awful things start up at half-past Dawn (which comes at 4:30 am here in the summer!) and run all day because the Landscapers have all the neighbors around us signed up for mowing services. Yeesh! Why can't they just mow their own lawns?? We have more yard than they do, and I mow it all myself. I keep threatening to tape record all their noise, and then play it back at full blast out on our back hill around two a.m. disgust.gif I bet that would get their attention!!

Dreamer1

These same neighbors have signed up for Leaf-Cleanup services in the Fall, too, so we get to here those industrial-sized leaf blowers all day. Fun. I really am getting it all on tape one of these days. You'll all be reading about a woman who's been driven out of her gourd by lawn crew noise! *grummble, grummble*

If you tape record all of that noise make sure you put the giant speakers out on the lawn at 5:00 Sat morning. and turn it all of the way up. Now don't expect any Christmas cookies this next season from the neighbors.
Should we all chip in and just buy you some earplugs?

Snow! You poor things. We had snow, couple of times. Last time was in 1987. Of course it melted before it hit the ground. It did get pretty cold here this winter. At night it's been in the 40s. And it's raining now.

Am I painting a picture of unrelenting misery down here in Sarasota, FL? I didn't think so. In fact, I don't think I can describe the weather here without sounding unbearably smug. All the more so as I spent last winter in exile in Cleveland where they have ice dunes and zero degree weather. I divorced my third husband and came home. No man is worth a Lake Erie winter.

Try to stay warm and come south ASAP.

I do sympathize with you yankees, at least I try. But when I do I have these horrible memories of what winter by a great lake is like and it blots out all human compassion.

Try to content yourself with the thought of spring - that week and a half in June when there are flowers, no rain, and it's not yet stiflingly muggy.

Posted by: Annabelle 19-Feb-2004, 09:10 AM
It's always funny to see what people call Yankee's and Southerners. Most of the time it's in relation to where you are geographically (big word).
Most people in the South use it that way too but alot of time they mean who was on the side of the civil war. Somethings never die and somethings never leave your mind.

I'm mindless so no conflict there! I would have had to get someone to remind me what side am I on?
Oh yea, am I in blue or grey? Blue mean southerner or northerner. Better write it down on a piece of paper for me just to keep me straight. (yea, I need a cheat sheet)

Blue --> North, Yankees
Grey --> South, Rebels

So, does a southern baseball player who makes it to the NY Yankees have an identitiy crisis?
Does a short guy drafted by the Giants have issues?

Posted by: corrigan 19-Feb-2004, 10:10 AM
So how do we attribute our allegiance? I have ancestors on both sides. But as all my relatives (at least the ones with whom I still have contact) grew up in Sarasota, FL I guess I'm a grey. But on the other hand Sarasota isn't very Southern... Nobody calls anybody Bubba, everybody is known familiarly with one name (no Daisy Mae's or Billy Bob's), and I can name off the top of my head 4 sushi, 2 Cuban, 2 northern Italian, 1 Indian, 3 French, and a Peruvian restuarant. Oh yeah, there are 6 venues for live theatre including the Opera House. So we're like a very relaxed New York with palm trees.

Back to the subject of weather, it's finally in the 60's YAY!!!!

Southern is not about idiots running about in white sheets drinking bud and getting their cousins a bit preggers. This is kind of similar to Catriona saying that Scots don't runaround in kilts carrying claymores yelling FREEDOM all day. My apologies for putting words in her mouth.

There is a whole, deep and beautiful culture if you do more than scratch the surface. Asheville, Charleston, New Orleans, Savannah, Mobile, Birmingham, Galveston, etc... I take pride in the fact that I am in a group of classic southerners that take pride in our heritage and enjoy the culture, art, language and food from around the world.

P.S. One of my grandfathers is called Bubba but the only Billy Bob I have every heard of is Thorton.

P.P.S. The weather is beautiful today. I saw some Tulip coming out of the ground today.

Wow, Birddog. I guess I hit a nerve. My flip remark was going for the picture of the sleepy, rural small southern town. With one traffic light. I know they have them, I've been to 'em. No need to go automatically to pointy hats and incest! I agree with your assessment of southern culture, as previously stated I have ancestors who fought for the grey side as well as the blue. But in any case I can identify equally well with both sides.

I do remember the whole dog issue. Picturesque snow drifts would become soggy mounds of debris and detritus of all types. We actually have something that competes for grossness. Red tide. For weeks at a time dead and dying sea creatures wash up on the beach along with a smell that is, well what you'd imagine it would be.

No offense, but why is it that Southerners don't seem to be over the Civil War? It's been over for over 140 years. We in the north don't dwell on it. Maybe because the Union won and our lands weren't ravaged by the war. I don't know. Maybe this is a subject for a different thread.

Posted by: birddog20002001 19-Feb-2004, 05:04 PM
It is probably the subject of a diferent thread but... the war never really ended. there were oaths of fealty, occupation, including the dissolving of state governments, the gold in the CSA vaults were taken and sent North and most importantly the whole issue of the war, States rights. The rights and freedoms of the States and the citizens were and are to this very day being erroded. Every time any American protests the Patriot Act, obscene taxes (between 5-7 months of the year everything you make goes to the Govt) and Government Regulation on how to do everything they fight for a Confederation.

The weather is still nice.

I've lived in 3 diffferent states and they ALL say that! tongue.gif The one place where I did find it to be true was Colorado Springs. The city is right up against the Front Range of the Rockies, so we couldn't see the sky to the west. I've seen times when it was a bright, sunny day and all of a sudden some big weather system came roaring in from behind the moutains. 20 minutes later, the strong mountain winds would blow the system away and it would be sunny again.

Posted by: Annabelle 25-Feb-2004, 08:02 AM
TSargent you are so correct about forgetting how to drive in snow. I'm use to the southern states area where we don't get snow but every 100 years here. I've spent alot of time in Md, R I and Mass and I got pretty comfortable up there driving in the snow. Now down here I'd freak out due to 2 things. I don't have the Volvo I use to have and I would tense up. It would take me a while to get use to it again.
Today here in Ga it's dark and grey but the flower's are getting watered. So it's really not that bad.

A

Posted by: tsargent62 25-Feb-2004, 08:08 AM
There must be some pretty nasty accidents down there when there is some snow then. I'm sure GA is full of ppl who have never walked on it, never mind drive on it.

It's actually kind of funny to see someone walk on an icy sidewalk who grew up down south. I know that all I have to do is stiffen up my legs a bit and I can walk at pretty much a normal pace. Southerns kind of shuffle along like little old grannys. Naturally, I'm very supportive -- NOT! I just tend to laugh at them. tongue.gif

Yes, there are - although it's more for show than for necessity here. I mean if you live in the mountains or very remoted from the big roads it's ok and useful. But all those elder men in the towns...

One thing I am jealous of you for, Gabs, is that you get to drive on the Autobahn. I think it would be a hoot to get on the road and just go, go, go without worrying about a speeding ticket.

Posted by: gaberlunzie 25-Feb-2004, 09:35 AM
Yes - and no! The "Autobahnen" around and between the big cities are mostly crowded, so you can't drive as fast as you wished to do. And there are also many areas with speed limits...
but then there are areas where you could push the gas pedal down and let the car go...this is fun, indeed.
But I think it's interesting: Much folk over here is fascinated by the "Routes" in the States....long, straight over miles and miles and miles....

Posted by: tsargent62 25-Feb-2004, 09:46 AM
That is true. You could jump on Interstate 80 in New York and drive all the way to the west coast of the US. I think it's about 2500 - 3000 miles (4000 - 4800 km). Going from north to south, I can get on Interstate 75 here in Michgan and drive to my In-law's place in south Florida and never leave the road. It takes about 28 hours to drive it. Not sure of the distance.

I don't know if there are any roads that stretch that far over Europe, but I know that if you drove that long you would definitely pass through more than one country. For most Americans who have never been to Europe, myself included, that seems fascinating.

4800 km??? You could start in the very North of Germany, cross Germany, drive through whole France and pass through Spain until the very South...3 complete countries in this distance...

One day, not this but perhaps next year I'll try out the Interstates over there...we are planning a trip to the States in about one or two years...we'll see!

Posted by: tsargent62 25-Feb-2004, 10:05 AM
I see you're surprised! I've talked to a number Europeans who don't realize how big the US is until they come here. I believe the country as a whole is bigger than Europe. And Canada is even bigger, although far less populated. The total population of the US is somewhere around 250 million.

I would love to go to Germany. I've been told by many ppl it is a beautiful country. I've had friends when I was in the Army who had been stationed there. They all loved it.

Posted by: gaberlunzie 25-Feb-2004, 10:19 AM
I think you would like it! It's a nice country. You'll find each kind of landscape...the North and the East Sea and the coasts, plain and heath land, middle high mountains, really high mountains (Alpes), beautiful lakes, River Valleys, woods, small villages and really big cities, areas of high and areas of very low population...and a lot of "history" as well. But no really long distances compared to the standards over there...

Since the EU was instituted, how free is passage between countries? Do you still have to have a passport? With our borders with Canada and Mexico all you have to do is go through the border crossing point, answer a couple questions (without leaving your car), and off you go.

Posted by: gaberlunzie 25-Feb-2004, 11:10 AM
Within the EU you don't need a passport for crossing the borders anymore nor are there any controls.
You only need it for entering the non-EU- neighbour countries in the East (Czech Republic, Slowakia, Poland, Hungaria...).

Gabby, what I want to know is do you ever go to bed? Every time I come on, you are on and I am up all hours! biggrin.gif

Posted by: 3Ravens 26-Feb-2004, 12:25 AM
CR, ya gotta remember it's 7:30AM where she is...it's early, not late! biggrin.gif

Posted by: gaberlunzie 26-Feb-2004, 03:39 AM
Yes, that's right...just add about 6 hours to your local time and you'll have mine...
I'm sleeping some hours, don't be afraid but I do not need so much sleep...could be a symptom for getting older tongue.gif unsure.gif ...oh, but that's another thread, isn't it? biggrin.gif
Oh, thank you Annabelle and 3R, I surely will let you know when I'm coming to the States...you're great! cool.gif

Posted by: 3Ravens 26-Feb-2004, 03:41 AM
Actually Gabby, from where CR is, it's either 7 or 8 hours difference. CR, are you on central or mountain time?

Posted by: CelticRose 26-Feb-2004, 03:45 AM
Well, you gals are right! I am the one up late! It is almost 3 am here. But I spent most of the day on the couch because of my back, so I needed to get up and sit for awhile. So I must be entertained by all you lovely people! biggrin.gif

I am on mountain time. And dont' seem to require that much sleep either. Must be the old age of 49 syndrome. laugh.gif

Posted by: 3Ravens 26-Feb-2004, 03:48 AM
OK, a difference of 8 hours between you and Gabby, then.

Posted by: gaberlunzie 26-Feb-2004, 04:02 AM
Thank you, Rose and 3R. I'm gonna note it in order to remember it exactly next time! smile.gif

Yes, 6 hours for me, 8 hours for CR.

Posted by: CelticRose 26-Feb-2004, 04:14 AM
Okay, good to know. Just wanted to make sure Gabby was getting her sleep! biggrin.gif Speaking of sleep, I should be the one going to bed, but since I spent most the day on the couch, I cannot tolerate laying down right now let along sleep! So I am being bad! rolleyes.gif

I am so stoked. It's actually going to get into the 50s this weekend. At least that's what the weather man is saying. Hmm... Oh, well, it was a nice thought...

Posted by: CelticRose 26-Feb-2004, 08:39 AM
Well I am not stoked! We NEVER EVER get rain in this freakin desert. It is sunny everyday. However, the Scottish highland games are this weekend and they are predicting a major rain storm! I so so mad I could spit! mad.gif I want to meet my favorite author out there and hear the pipes and drum as I crave them. well, I am going anyway, stubborn me! I can get pneumonia for all I care. At least I would have had a great time getting it! laugh.gif

Couldn't you send some sun and heat over there?
Snowing again, freezing all night. This morning all keyholes and shuts of my car had been frozen, too...Lots of fun for my neighbourhood during the half an hour it took me to get the car defrosted...they are a very compassionate folk...but I do not mind; would have grinned myself if it had happened to someone else, so what... smile.gif

Posted by: CelticRose 26-Feb-2004, 11:58 AM
Okay Gabby! Just for you! ((((((((((((((((((((((((sunshine and warmth)))))))))))))))

I just got back from being out and we are very sun shiney and warm. However, that is all supposed to change by this afternoon to cold and lots of rain!

Posted by: tsargent62 26-Feb-2004, 12:08 PM
I think that it's pretty ironic that you're *****ing about the sun and us northerners would kill for some! That's like a kid complaining you gave him too much ice cream! wink.gif

I hope the weather over there will NOT change...not THAT special weekend, this wouldn't be fair at all. unsure.gif
Have a lot of fun anyhow...hope you will enjoy your meeting with DG...I'm really a ilttle bit jealous, oh yes, I am... angel_not.gif And you know you just HAVE to tell me everything about it next week, lucky lady, you! smile.gif

We seem to be thawing out a bit. Today we're supposed to hit 45 and up to 55 on Sunday. Although, I've seen this kind of weather behaviour before and we've plunged back in the deep freeze. It's kind of like handing a kid a bowl of ice cream, letting him have a taste, then taking away from him. WAAAAA!!! I'm sick of winter!!!!

Geez. Two inches of show/slush here in Atlanta over the last two days. For us that's a city-closing/school-closing/raid-the-grocery-stores event. But we're praying for sun and 60 degrees over the weekend.

Oh Spring, where art thou?

Oh, Todd! I knew you were kidding! biggrin.gif I live in Arizona because of the daily sun and warmth we have here all year round. However, I am just mad that of all special days, The Scottish Highland games tomorrow, it has to rain! But someone told me that the games continue anyway. I just hate to drive an hour and a half and pay $12.00 to get in to find out that it has been rained out! But we'll see what happens. So you have drummed through many rainy Highland games?

I have an affinity for drums cause my dad was a professional drummer in a band for many many years. Whenever I listen to music, it is the drummer I listen to the most. thumbs_up.gif

2 inches. Eh. That's when our winter parking bans go into effect. If you're parked on a major street and the snowfall is over two inches, your car will be ticketed and towed, and you will be taken out to a field and shot biggrin.gif (just kidding about the last part) .
