If I finish a sentence without rolling an R, I feel incomplete!! If you like Welsh accents, you'll love my manager's. And my friend Gareth takes aaaaaaaaages to finish a sentence because his accent is soooooooo Welshy! He seems to stress every syllable!

There's a weather girl for ITV who is Welsh speaking (her name's Sian Lloyd) but you'd never know because her English is perfect - not a drop of Welsh in it. And did you know that Huw Edwards was originally told to lose the accent when he first went into journalism?

A recent survey showed that the Welsh accent is the 2nd most hated accent in Britain after Birmingham. The problem is that Wales has many accents within it.

I've heard about a Welsh actor who was told to lose his Welsh accent, or he'd never succeed as a "British" actor.

Why on earth the Welsh accent is "hated"? On what bases? It's music to my ears! (I admit I'm prejudiced for Wales.) smile.gif

I think it's because Wales is generally disliked by England. My English friends admitted they disliked Wales. The following comments have been made to me:

"I hated Wales. I was so glad to get out. I'd never go there again. Sorry, Charles, I won't ever visit you in Swansea".

"When I was younger, me and my friends used to cycle over to Wales and spit on the Welcome to Wales sign".

"I've always suspected the Welsh of secret conspiracies against the English".

"Wales dislikes England for no reason."

"When I walk into a Welsh pub, everyone goes quiet and looks at me".

"When I was in Wales, the people in the local shop were always really rude to me just because I was English".

"The Welsh pretend to be nice to bring in the tourists, but they're the nastiest bunch of people that are out to what they can get. They pickpocketed me, conned me and were rude".

I think that England is a bit scared of Wales. Why else would they go to such lengths to extinguish our culture and identity?

To be honest though, I have no idea why the Welsh accent is so disliked and it varies from region to region. I have a completely different accent from Pembrokeshire, Cardiff, Gwent or anywhere in the North.

Wales isn't the only one to suffer English genocide.

Indeed. It would seem England is fairly intolerant towards other cultures. I tend to mean the Government, though. Rather than the people.
