Rosemary,

I love that scene too. Last year I taught my 9th grade students (14-years of age) the "Two Towers". Half the class loved the book, the other half complained. I became so excited as we read the book together and discussed it. I read "The Hobbit" as a child, but never had a chance to read LOTR. I love the movie trilogy...I cannot wait for the "Return of the King" to come out.

I read the Harvard Lampoon Bored of the Rings when I was 14, before I read the hobbit and the other books. I still remember lines from it, like

"We boogies are a hairy folk,
who like to eat until we choke.
Loving all like friend and brother,
we very seldom eat each other."

If you never read that parody of the trilogy then you have really missed out. Probably out of print now.

As far as the Tolkein books,
I read them all while I was in High School, but then long ago while I was at Ft. Jackson, SC I reread them and that is when they just sort of stuck and came alive. I have probably reread them fifty times since then. I just finished again last October when a friend brought down a copy of the trilogy and left it with me.

Still haven't seen the movies yet. The first one has just come on Direct TV, but I missed it the other night, no telling when it will be on again.

My favorite LOTR quote is Gimlee, speaking to Aragorn, in The Two Towers: "Toss me, but don't tell the elf!" biggrin.gif

Hello all. I'm new here, but I'm not afraid to say that I've read the trilogy almost once a year for the past 15 or so.... If you really are into Tolkien and the LOTR, you might want to try reading the histories. There are 12 books in all and the first is The Book of Lost Tales, Part 1. The Silmarillion is also a good read, but I'll warn you it is exhaustive and is a history of the elves and the rings. It is a pretty hard read unless you are really interested. And I couldn't agree more with the quotes that have been posted. The riddle of Aragorn has to be one of the best. It has it all-it hints of the past, present and future.

In western lands beneath the Sun
the flowers may rise in Spring,
the trees may bud, the waters run,
the merry finches sing.
Or there maybe 'tis cloudless night
and swaying beeches bear
the Elven-stars as jewels white
amid their branching hair.

Though here at journey's end I lie
in darkness buried deep,
beyond all towers strong and high,
beyond all mountains steep,
above all shadows rides the Sun
and Stars forever dwell:
I will not say the Day is done,
nor bid the Stars farewell.

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

Gandalf in letter to Frodo, from 'The Fellowship of the Ring'

Hullo! said Pippin, poking his head round the curtain. I thought you had forgotten all about me. I am glad to see you back. It has been a long day.
But the night will be too short, said Gandalf. I have come back here, for I must have a little peace, alone.
You should sleep, in a bed while you still may. At the sunrise I shall take you to the Lord Denethor again. No, when the summons comes, not at sunrise. The Darkness has begun. There will be no dawn.

I've recently re-read the trilogy and the Hobbit too, and underlined many passages that I particularly liked... I'll have to go look at the books again to quote them, tho, my memory is like a sieve.

But one that is short and sweet (and in every one of the movies so far) is this:
"There is always hope."
Just watched Aragorn say it to that discouraged young man just before the battle of Helm's Deep began, in "The Two Towers".

My favorite quote is from Gandalf: "A wizard is never late, neither is he early; he arrives precisely when he means to." Why is it my favorite?

Now, I must confess, I use this one on a weekly basis. Picture it: I'm running late (the "L" word is a bad word in my line of work) from yet another meeting. I walk in about 5 minutes after the start of the next meeting and some officer looks at me and says "Sergeant, you're late." Well, I casually transform into Gandalf and using my best made up British accent, I let him have it. The whole room chuckles and I'm saved -- I get to leave with just as much a$$ as I came into the room with.

Now that's the reason it's my favorite quote -- it's saved my butt on more than one occasion (not that anybody asked, but I thought I'd share anyhow).

Mmm, I don't remember exactly where it is but it certainly sounds like something said in "Return" during the battle where Eowyn...

oops, don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read the book! I'll have to go perusing this afternoon during tea and see if I can find the quote...
