Background: A Shepherd. Occupational name from Middle English calfhirde, from Old English (Anglian) calf ‘calf’ + hierde ‘herdsman’. As for other domestic animals, the care of cattle has given us some surnames, but none in great number. There are about sixty Cowards, a very misleading contraction of 'cow-herds', rather more calverts and Calvers.
Variations: Calvert, Calverd, Calvard, Calver, Calvers.
