Celtic Radio Community > Technical Support > New Security Measures

Posted by: CelticRadio 09-Jul-2009, 06:40 PM
Our ISP today discovered a very strange file attachment made by a Celtic Radio member. This file attachment was actually a copy of a website that was fradulently taking peoples financial information.

What this member failed to understand is that by making a copy of the site and posting it here in our forum, they basically where allowing this site to appear to run on Celtic Radio.

In order to prevent this from happening again we are putting restrictions on file uploads in our forums. Only pictures and photographs can be uploaded now. No text files, word files, HTML files, PDF's.

We also needed to delete a number of file attachents (non-graphic) just because it is too much of a security risk to allow anything that could shut our site down again to be available.

Other security measures we are taking is members will no longer be approved for Celtic Radio accounts without email validation. If a new member signs-up and never validates their account, they will be deleted in 60 days.

Paul,

Its to bad you have to do this, but I understand and thanks for keeping this site a safe and fun place to hang out.

We have a very secure website. This kinda blew me away as I never though a member would actually make a copy of a fraudulent site and then attach it in a post!

Everyone please be careful when discussing spam and sites that are fraudulent. Make sure you do not post links to those sites.

Most people who "visit" fraudulent sites have no idea what they are doing. They get redirected there, or click on a site that appears to be legitimate. It always comes back to an old saying, *If it looks too good to be true, it's usually not true*. I really do think it's a shame that someone would post & include a link to a site like you just mentioned. But, good thing it was caught, Thanks Paul, for keeping this site a safe, secure place.

Thank you for keeping us safe from that kind of website. I am sure it was not easy for you to come to the decision that you had to limit what we can upload but it was necessary.

Keep up the great work!

I run any link I visit through Lavasoft security. I hope but do not know if it finds anything imbedded. Fortunately I post very few links here and then only those that I use with some regularity. I sincerely hope it was nothing I might have posted.
