I've been wanting for some time to learn the proper use of a sword and staff in accordance with the Western styles such as one might find in various parts of Europe. The only people I know who might have the knowledge and skill to teach me, I rarely if ever see. This pretty much leaves me to self study. Google search has yeilded a little bit, but nothing really informative for a beginner such as myself. Does anyone have any advice?

There's a group that focuses on Scottish sword and targework...I'll have to dig around and find them again. Back (way back) when I fought heavy weapons, I hung around with these guys for awhile. They were a *great* group.

...wanna say they were called Cataran...something similar...

http://www.hemac.org/index.php

Try to search on this side. Or if you understand the germany i can apply a good codex for you:

Hanko Döbringer (1389)

You can download at www.kardrendje.hu
Click on the hungarian flag, after this choose the "könyvtár" menu, and click again the hungarian flag. After it, the left side appear a "menü". Click on the first ("könyvtár"), and after then, the right side click on the "vívókönyvek". Then the centre appear some codex: choose the Hanko smile.gif. Its translated in hungarian so you will see the first page is hun, the next german, the next hun, the next german, etc...

I hope i can help you.

I will see what I can find out also. I just got a claymore and have been told by a few people that you use it like a rifle with a bayonet. The quilllions are for up close fighting. The source I got this from is very reptable but one problem thing is 5 lbs razor sharp and I can hardly lift it. How can you practice hmmmmm I really hope these threads do well.

Thanks for them smile.gif

Great topic, Rindy! I have a fascination for this area, although I haven't the first thing knowledge about it all.

I love martial arts and have always wanted to participate in it myself, but still haven't...oh well!

I look forward to reading many discussions here re this topic!

How cool, Rindy, to have a Claymore! thumbs_up.gif

Check out your local college. Many of the colleges are teaching the art of fencing. I know Julianna wanted to take fencing at SVU. We told her no way. She has a bad knee that will go out on her. They might teach other types of sword work or know where you might be able to go to find books and/or classes. If it is a martial arts thing maybe some of the martial arts schools might know.
