Celtic, you hit it on the head. The intolerance involved cuts across all politcal and religeous lines.

I'm just so tired of everything in this country devolving into us versus them stone throwing between the right and the left. Things are rarely as black and white as people try to make them.

This business with the hat is depressing. I got a really nice velvet Santa hat as a party gift, and I gave it to the African cab driver who took me home after the party. He's from Cote D'Ivoire -- talking about political messes and horrible standard of living -- and he grinned from ear to ear and put it on, saying it would help him get nice tips (which it most likely did). Now -- is this nice man going to be harassed or deprived of tips by the many Jewish and Muslim cab customers in New York?

Somehow, I doubt it. We're grateful to catch a cab at all at this time of year, and a cheerful cabbie in a good mood is so refreshing he will get a nice tip even if he's stark naked. They should send that kid here for a cultural relativity class.

Heck, they might be tipped better in some cases if they were stark naked.

You should have seen this guy and the way he looked in the hat. He was almost night-black, with a round face and the most gorgeous big set of teeth you ever saw. That red hat never looked better on anyone -- if you couldn't smile at that, you should check your pulse.
