Damd Dawg is a stray canine of mixed breed, brindle in color. His breeding is this world's equivalent of St. Bernard and medium sized Fencejumper. Although only about 8 months old and malnourished, he weighs about 90 lb and was in reasonably good physical condition until pinned to a floor with a rusty knife. Since he just happened to show up and attached himself to this group of characters we don't know anything more about his background.

He answers to "Damd Dawg" because that's the only human phrase he recognizes as being used when referring to himself. For all practical purposes he's just a stray, and his behavior will be based on a similar dog I know very well.

Phartripper:

6'4" tall, 260 lbs, muscular build from all the dirt moving while a student of archaeology.

Student of the ancient arts of healing, shape shifting, and magick.

Now a renouned ( in some circles ) archaeologist with a mission.

Jesdone Droppid, or so he is known, is a collecter. He has had a very sorted past, and is an ex seaman. He wanders around Western, and Central Europe, searching for artifacts that cary certain traits, or common markings and glyphs.

He's just shy of six feet, and is a solid 210 lbs. He wears a trenchcoat, and slightly loose fitting boots, that can easily be taken on and off, as need by. He tends to preffer being barefoot, and at all costs, will atempt to keep them dry, due to years standing on deck, feet soaked through the bone. He has his share of quirks, but many of them are an air to hide his old self.

As much as he tries to live his new life, there will always be a bit of the pirate in him, as with his brother, who has been working with the Oxymorons for the past three years.

In no means do I want to offend anyone, but I would like to keep this game in the 18th through 21st centuries and here on earth, at least for now. Please develop your characters accordingly and if you want to assume an unrepresented ,introduced character please do so or create a new character based on the story.

Posted by: oldraven 07-Mar-2005, 11:51 AM
Then I think it's time we decided who, exactly, the Oxymorons are.

I hope Jesdone is within the realm of this reality we've got going here. smile.gif

Posted by: Shadows 07-Mar-2005, 12:21 PM
Jedone is fine! I just do not want to involve other planets, atleast not at this time, who knows where it will take us in the future LOL!
Right now we seem to be in the 18th or 19th centuries, ie: tall ships masts...

As for the Oxymorons...a group intnet on stopping Phartripper and world progress ( I call them Republican, LOL! ), those that don't want any spice in their lives, food or dress! They just want status quo as defined by them!

And for those who wonder... Holeylands Is not the Holylands!
There is a distinct difference between holes and what is holy!

Does that define the Oxymorons for you?

Posted by: oldraven 07-Mar-2005, 12:45 PM
Works for me. smile.gif

Oh, dear. Should someone point Mike at this thread? The aliens are attacking again. wink.gif

As for Crabshack. Shadows, I think we should take him along as a deck hand. It'll create conflict later on, and allow the story to unfold a bit more. Also, if we leave Blarney on the Gastronia docks, we'll be shutting Haldur out of the game. sad.gif Hey, we all need an antagonist or two. biggrin.gif It would be nice to get some of the heat off Jesdone, as well.

Convince Phartripper that you need the man.....nothing is in stone !

Posted by: oldraven 09-Mar-2005, 02:28 PM
And that, as they say, is that. Haldur, I think we're all going to have a lot of fun with Crabshack. laugh.gif Like the enemy of my enemy is my friend, kind of thing. It should make for interesting acts, if nothing else.

The Cap'n is going to pick up a few more hands before se set sail. I imagine there'll be a good twelve men, altogether. It would be fun if one or two of these lesser characters could have a voice, for comic relief, and such. I'll take on a Swabber, anyone else? Or if any new members want to join in, this is the perfect opportunity to slip into the story.

This voyage is not limited to just male characters, even though the age old curse about women on a ship... well you ladies are welcome to play even encouraged!

Shadows ( Phartripper )

Posted by: oldraven 09-Mar-2005, 03:16 PM
That exact thought was running through my head when I said 'about twelve men'. I mean, we can have a woman disguising herself as a seaman.

Posted by: Shadows 09-Mar-2005, 03:31 PM
Phartripper is not a pig... he likes the ladies and does not want to see them limited in their characters here as disguised seaman... I have hopes some of the team on the digs will be of the female persuasion... life would be dull without them!!!! We will see what ladies , and how they want to play, develops!

Posted by: oldraven 09-Mar-2005, 04:08 PM
No pig here, either. I'm just wondering how else you would convince these old Sea Dogs from that era to let a woman on a ship. Maybe they're more forward thinking in Gastronia. tongue.gif

Posted by: Shadows 09-Mar-2005, 04:39 PM
The ship will dock at other ports...ehhh?

If they are members of my team of sand movers they will be on the ship LOL! Even if I gots to sic my mutt on the Captain LOL!

Gilidorfus Astronitus is of indeterminate origin. He is about 5'10" weighs around 170 lbs and is in very good shape. He is 35, has lt .brown hair and green eyes.

Posted by: WizardofOwls 09-Mar-2005, 09:13 PM
Oops! Posted too soon.

He is a surgeon (of course) with a strong interest in archaeology and history in general.

Damd Dawg LOVES human women. Especially good food human women. They make his tail wag so hard it could fly off his butt. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Faileas 30-Mar-2005, 10:42 AM
Pick Pocket - a street urchin of the first class. He's grown up round the docks and made his living both from the obvious or carrier at the market stalls - good hunting grounds, if ye take my meaning hehe wink.gif He is between thirteen and fourteen, has black hair, black beady eyes that see everything and incredibly quick hands. He's never been to sea but would do everything to see more of the world. smile.gif

Hey guys! Sorry I haven't posted in a while sad.gif

I think Wiz was worried I'd abandoned ship, but for good reason I suppose. I've just been having a lot of stuff going on in life (who hasn't) and my internet's been disconnected...but I'm taking care of that! wink.gif

I'd love to develop Crabshack a little more but I'm unsure how you guys want him to play into the story, but regarding what old raven's said, I agree. Crabshack is definitely an intriguing antogonist in his own right!

I too am curious about the Oxymorons...mainly, who's willing to jump in and play 'em!

Posted by: Shadows 02-Apr-2005, 09:37 AM
Play him the way you want, that is what makes this interesting, don't ask us just do it within reason ( no spaceships, alien life forms, etc. at least not yet ) LOL!

Sorry I've been missing lately. Got a really nasty cheast cold, that's had me down for a few days.

Hey there big guy! We've been waiting for ya! Glad to see you back and that you're feeling better!

Play on! smile.gif

Posted by: oldraven 11-Apr-2005, 11:28 AM
I though, since we're going to be spending a fair amount of time on a ship, that we should know what our Ocean Swallow looks like. smile.gif I found this Gun-Brig, and it seems to fit the situation finely. Although, we've probably got a 12 gun, which is slightly smaller and won't require too big of a crew. Altogether, I think there should be 20-22 men on board. The Captains Cabin will be raised, so there is a door entrance, and not s hatch. This leaves the rear part you can see higher, so there will be ladders on either side.

I hope everyone agrees, this is the perfect ship for our story. smile.gif

This is a fine looking ship, much bigger then I see us on the time now...

... remember we only at this time have about 12 hands manning this vessel, and that is a lot of sail for 12 to handle...

...the time period seems right, but the size is much to big.

I was thinking more along the lines of a Schooner! Any thoughts from the other players ?

This is more what I see us on:

http://www.shipmodel.ru/La%20Jacinthe.htm

Remeber we are on a private vessel not one that belongs to some crown!

Posted by: oldraven 11-Apr-2005, 02:55 PM
Agreed. That is a 20 gun, and probably used a crew of at least 30. That's why I was going for something smaller, like a 12 gun. I think the sails are what actually make it look so much bigger. If you look at the deck view, it seems much more managable, and at 12, the entire boat would be about as long as the hull.

I looked for schooners, but none of them seemed to be very fortified. This only has 2 guns, and I have a feeling the Swallow takes on riskier hires than 2 guns can support.

Why don't we split the difference? A ship like the one I found with schooner sails, (which allow for higher speeds and manuverability). I like the shallower hull on that schooner too. We've already established a rear cabin, too. 10 gun?

*edit*
And no tiller. wink.gif

Posted by: Shadows 11-Apr-2005, 03:04 PM
The Schooner is a much faster vessel... I can live with maybe a 10 gun... let us see what the others think before we write it in blood LOL!

Posted by: Faileas 11-Apr-2005, 03:12 PM
Anything goes lads ..., as far as I am concerned anyway. I have to admit that i got no great knowledge on ships ..., but he, i think that sounds fine what ye suggest there. And speed is certainly what our bonnie boat does need right now ....

And i think there might some more crewmembers coming on board lately? So it could maybe slightly bigger but not unrealistic for twelve man to handle ....

Does that help in any way?

Sure does. smile.gif

And that's the beauty of lots of silent crew members. A lot of characters to take over if anyone wants to join in.

Posted by: Shadows 11-Apr-2005, 03:36 PM
I just want you all to remember that Phartripper is a private individual and is not heavily funded... the size of the Schooner is probibly way above his means anyway..the promise of treasure ( ha, ha ) is most likely the only reason Shotglas is taking on this voyage! LOL!

A larger ship would not be available to one of limited resources...

I also like the odds to be against us every so often...

Any comments?

Sounds about right to me.

And I added that 'good luck' bit in there as a bit of irony, in case Pick does end up being a girl. wink.gif

Hi guys again,

just been searching for a while and stumbled across this paragraph

"The Olympia
In January 1814 William Todd was an Assistant Surgeon onboard the Olympia #1340, a Royal Navy Cutter with 10 Guns/Cannons, serving under Lieutenant W. Windeyer on the Downs Station. This is a location off the east coast of Kent, England which is protected to seaward by the notorious Goodwin Sands and the base for the Royal Navy ships patrolling the North Sea and the Dutch coast. At the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815, the size of the Royal Navy was cut from 145,000 to 19,000 troops. Soon after that, in 1816, William Todd began his lifelong career with Hudson Bay Company from 1816-1950 in Canada.

Built in 1806 in Bermuda, the Olympia (of worm resistant Cedar from the area) was a Royal Navy Cutter, 142 tons, captured, recaptured, and sold in 1815. Bermuda was an important Royal Navy base from 1795 to 1953. The Royal Naval Dockyard in Halifax, Nova Scotia, was considered too vulnerable to attack from America. Bermuda, beyond the operating range of the United States Navy, isolated but in the strategic mid Atlantic, was ideal for a surprise Royal Navy attack.

At the end of 18th century and at the start of 19th century Cutters were used for coastal surveying/patrolling, and later as messengers in the Royal Navy fleet against sea piracy and illegal trading by smugglers. They were heavily armed ships, typically carrying 8 to 12 guns and a number of falconets. Consequently, besides fast transport of precious, perishable goods, the cutters were used immediately by Navy as a vice and patrol boat. In England at the end of 18th and beginning of 19th Century, both the smugglers and coastguards used armed Cutters. Generally streamlined and of greater draught, the Cutters were extremely fast and had a discrete possibility of manouvering even in narrow waters or rough seas. "

at http://modena.intergate.ca/todd/0ship.htm

I think these type of ships are a bit smaller and look a bit heavier too , but seem fairly fast for that. And has good weaponry too.

I' ll try to upload a picture of a Cutter which you will hopefully find underneath. ...

How does that sound to ye?

Posted by: Shadows 11-Apr-2005, 04:00 PM
Cutters are good ships, but most valuable on coastal waters and not to the open sea... we are going to be headed into some rough passage that a cutter would not stand up to... good idea though!

Posted by: WizardofOwls 11-Apr-2005, 07:24 PM
Hi guys! I know absolutely nothing about ships, so I'll leave it in your capable hands. Again sorry about not being able to help in the fight today!

Posted by: Swanny 12-Apr-2005, 12:13 AM
Actually, brigs such as this were pretty common commercial vessels during the late 18th/early 19th century, usually with fewer guns though. (for an good example google up "Lady Washington" ).

Each gun requires a crew of three, but a 10 gun armed merchantman would not likely have had a full compliment of gunners, unless she carried letters of marque as a privateer or had been pressed into naval service.

A crew of 12 would include a master and commander, (double duty as ship's captain and sailing master), first mate, a midshipmen for each watch (generally midshipmen), and rigging/deck crew for each watch, so it's conceivable that a crew of 12 could man her at see, but probably not fight her to her full capability. A surgeon, carpenter, bosun's (boatswains) mate, &c would have been optional.

A brig certainly lies within reason. Many privateers were schooners (two or more masts with fore and aft rigging), which were the smallest purpose built war ships of the period. I agree a cutter, shallop, or similar sized vessel would probably have not set sail for notoriously rough seas under a reasonably able and responsible commander.

I'd vote to stick with the brig, but remember that we are short handed and do what we can to augment her crew.

WOOF

Thanks Swanny, for your wisdom. You seem to have a pretty tight grasp of seafaring. Me on the other hand, google and guessing. laugh.gif There's no expert on my side of the screen, WizardofOwls.

Actually, that would be my fault. Shadows, Faileas and I got a little carried away, and I forgot to wait and let everyone get a shot off before getting us out in the clear. That's what the 'little private party' refference was for. wink.gif

So, Swanny, be sure to give me a swift kick in the pants if I mess up with the ship lingo. wink.gif

My pleasure. 18th century reenacting is my passion, and I love to sail, so I've done some research over the years. Very fascinating subject to me.

Here's a trivia site with a fair overview of nautical terminology that could crop up in our adventure.http://www.history.navy.mil/trivia/trivia03.htm

Personally I prefer the Schooner, it being lighter and quicker, but it seems I am out voted....

What say ye all?

I would just let them be names mentioned from time to time until we get more players... I don't want any more characters myself....

We seem to have some "Real" characters in the main roles now....

Posted by: Faileas 14-Apr-2005, 03:46 PM
I am taking on Alwar, oldraven. I given him a rather sullen and scaring character, but likely he is turning out to be a softie with a rough spot , hehe. It makes sense, however, as Pick is comandeered to help him and it would make sense to have the ship's cook and surgeon in the game ... All right with ye lot?

I mean of course the other way round, alas - a roughie with a soft spot, hehe. laugh.gif

Sounds good. But is this Alwan's twin, Alwar? wink.gif I like the idea. A ruffian who has care enough to stitch up the people he sticks. laugh.gif

As for Bogrit. If anyone needs him to say anything, just put some words in his mouth. biggrin.gif I don't think any of us need to double up any more than we are, so he's a community character until a new player wants to join in.

Posted by: Maddie 23-Apr-2005, 04:51 PM
I'd play... don't know what character you still need.

I could do a SEAGULL... MINE? Mine? MINE! MINE!! MINE!!!

well, just kidding.

Create a character or take on on of the ones thatare communal... either way you are welcome to play, there is nothing set in stone for this RPG.

I was a serving wench on a crappy ship up untill yesterday when the captain decided to get a little fresh with me where at that time I knocked out what was left of his teeth. biggrin.gif
