Any advice on the purchase of a scanner for my computer. Don't need anything fancy. Just for old pix mostly. Thanks..

I use a Canon CanoScan N670U. It's not one of the more expensive models, but it does the job.

My husband got an Acer 310U at Frys (mea culpa mea culpa) for $49 and a $20 rebate several years ago. It was their last 300 dpi and first USB model. It has worked fine for several years although it may be starting to get a line in it. Probably needs cleaning. For $30 it couldn't be beat. so put Acer on your list.

You don't need anything with super high resolution, that will just give you super big files unless you save at a reasonable resolution. Most printers can't print to that and you only need about a 100 dpi for web posting.

So look for a close out, and good to better software included. We have friends that had another brand and until they got a in house visit by their kids all they could save to was a proprietary format and most people couldn't open their files.

The software and it's ability to fiddle with things may be more important than the machine.

Mine is an ACER and does a really good job. I bought it used from a friend who hardly ever used it, so I don't know what the retail would be on it. Love it though and use it all the time!

Just don't buy a Mustek, it's probably the worst censored.gif on the market.

Look for one from major brands like HP, Canon or Epson.
