Celtic Radio Community > Scotland > Scotland's National Anthem

Anyone know if a new national anthem was picked? I got an email saying "Flower of Scotland" was the national anthem, but I haven't seen anything online to support that.

Anyone know? Got a reference?

Hmm, I will try to find out what I can for you Marc.

Well Marc from all that I have read there has not been any discion on a new anthem. There are many people who are lobbying for Flower of Scotland but nothing further has been noted.

I hope this helps.

Since there's even a Gàidhlig version of Flower of Scotland,(Flùr na h-Alba, I think) and that this tune is played by many musicians when they are asked to play a national anthem, I go for Flower of Scotland, even if I think Scotland the Brave's better

The official national anthem of Scotland is God save the Queen tongue.gif Unofficially i think most Scots would say Flower of Scotland although Scotland the Brave is sometimes played. In recent times there have been calls for a new official anthem. I've heard talk of song from Robert Burns, but as yet nothing has been done. Which is pretty much how it is in Scotland. rolleyes.gif

Cu Dubh! A friend of mine from Scotland told me the same thing you said as you both would know. He said that at most ball games he attends he hears Flower of Scotland. He told me that Flower of Scotland was originally written by The Corries. I have their CD with that song on it. Too bad the guy who wrote it died and never got to see the fruits of his labor. Sad, eh?

Yes very sad CR. Scotland the brave is a great song isn't it. They sing it at the Rugby games too. Very stirring. smile.gif

To the horror of many of my fellow countrymen, I actually like God Save The Queen. I also respect the Union Jack. However, I feel much more attention and respect needs to be paid to our National Anthems and I resent the England for not following policies of tolerance and education toward the Celtic nations. My English friends knew virtually nothing of the Celtic world before meeting me, yet THREE of the four United Kingdom subnations are CELTIC!

Flower of Scotland does seem to be in the forefront, though I agree Scotland the Brave is more stirring and probably much more associated with Scotland all over the world.

Is anyone taking the nomination of Don MacLean's "Caledonia" seriously? I hear it's got some support out there too. Maybe not just the thing for an official anthem, but it does it to me every time.
