One of my Scottish lineages on my mother's side is the lowland Livingston family. One of my distant cousins has put together a site describing their rise and fall. Geoge W. is descended from one branch of this family. (I was able to trace his ancestry back far enough to discover that we are 16th cousins--fortunatelly, not close enough a relationship that we need to claim each other.)
As described on the site:
QUOTE
AMONGST the chief historical families of Scotland, few have risen at various periods to greater power and Higher honours, or have possessed more extensive estates than the Livingstons, and few have fallen into more complete and disastrous decay.
