I have this week agreed to participate in a sponsored skydive!!! jawdrop.gif

Those who know me well are fully aware I'm rather scared of heights scared.gif so this is a MASSIVE undertaking for me and it will be a huge personal achievement. It is anticipated it will take place in February. ohmy.gif blink.gif

I am jumping in aid of http://www.alzscot.org/

aww Lynda, that is so sweet! (And a good way to conquer your fear of heights) I totally have faith in you and think you can do it. You have until February to let it sink in. Besides, it always makes people feel better to do something for a good cause clap.gif hug.gif

Congrats, Lynda! Of course, I think you're completely out of your mind biggrin.gif !

What a great cause! Trust me, I couldn't do it, but I'll be pulling for you when you dive. Will there be photos? Love to see them!

Afraid if heights, and jumping out of a perfectly fine aircraft.... Yeah. that could be considered certifiable!

DON'T PANIC!

also, don't forget your towel.

Tell us all about it when you get back smile.gif

Hello Lynda!

I'm guessing that this is your first jump out of a perfectly good airplane, am I right? wink.gif

Seriously, though - I will definitely keep you in my prayers and ask God to bless your jump in every way - from take-off to a gentle-as-a-feather touch-down.

I think you are very brave to do this - and you are doing it for a very good cause!

Bless you!

I don’t think that you’re mad, because I’m one of those people, who, as a child jumped off the garage roof, wearing a bed sheet for a Parr-shoot, and I’m still here. Anyway, I think it’s admirable to jump for such a good cause. Who knows, you might like it. Have a safe landing.

You're crazy.

But it IS a very good cause. . .

Hey it shouldn't be so bad. But jumping out of a perfectly good airplane is really nuts. But if it's for a good cause - well that can count as some excuse. LOL

Have a good jump. I bet you afterwards you want to do it again and again.

I jumped out of planes in the army for 5 years and I had a lot of buddies that were afraid of heights that did it also. They did fine as you will. It is all perspective, from 850+ feet the altitude makes it not real, but the 34 foot training tower we used would freeze them all up because that is a height that you can wrap your mind around. But with encouragement they did it, after a while easily.
Bless your cause and best of luck.

Can hardly wait to hear about it all.

Posted by: zeryx 07-Dec-2006, 01:05 AM
Wow thank you everyone!!!

Robbie - yes it is the first time I've ever done this unsure.gif

This is what I've been told so far, it's at Errol Airfield just between Dundee and Perth. The Jump is from at least 10,000 feet, freefall down to 5,000 feet - falling through the air at 120 mph!! It is a tandem jump so at least I'll have a qualified instructor strapped safely to my back wink.gif but that does mean I'll have less opportunity to chicken out at the last minute and say no - he'lll just jump and I'll be along for the ride!!! and I'll have a certificate to prove that I did it!!

Eugene - I was speaking to an ex Marine at work and he told me exactly the same thing about perspectives and perception of height. LOL I did make a comment to the organiser saying wouldn't it be particularly cold in February? He laughed and said it's cold up there anyway! laugh.gif

I work for the government and it has been arranged that our internal news magazine will be in attendance on the day with their cameras - so everyone in my department UK wide will be able to read all about it! rolleyes.gif

So far I've got about £145 worth of sponsorship, a great start but I've still have a way to go smile.gif

Hello Lynda!

You've sparked a thought in me this morning - is there any way someone in the States could also sponsor you? I'd be willing to, if there was a method of payment that could be accepted.

Please let me know. smile.gif

Hi Robbie smile.gif thank you for asking hug.gif I've got a friend in the US and she's found the easiest way to send me money is by transferring it into my bank, but I'm not sure if she's doing it from her US or UK bank account ... I'll ask her.

rolleyes.gif well - it's been booked for the weekend of 17/18 February 2007 - I'll probably do mine on 17th unsure.gif

Muircheartach my friend actually transferred money from her UK account to me but says that it is also possible to transfer money into a UK account from a US bank and that anyone wishing to do so would need to speak to their bank to find out more.

Hello Lynda!

Thank you for letting me know - I'll approach my bank and find out how to do this.

Alternatively, do you think there is any way to pay with PayPal? I have purchased a few things from the UK (I currently have a front fender for my R100GS coming from Scotland) and found that there are quite a few people who have setup PayPal accounts in "your neck of the woods". Just curious...

Have a wonderful weekend!

Hello Lynda!

Just to let you and everyone who would like to contribute to your worthy effort know, the fundraising site you're using works for those of us in the States! I hope that I made a little difference! tongue.gif For anyone in the UK, you have the additional "blessing" of having 28% of the taxable amount given to Justgiving as well - with no additional cost to the donor!

I hope that more people use Justgiving - it is sooooo easy! biggrin.gif

Hi Lynda,

Yes, time does seem to move too quickly when something big is about to happen, but you'll do great - I know you will! thumbs_up.gif

Besides, you're my new hero - and I know that God will be with you all the way up and all the way down - to a safe, gentle landing! Who knows, you might like it so much that you will want to do it again - stranger things have happened wink.gif

You're in my prayers, just as everyone will be on that day - you're doing such a brave thing for such a good cause. I certainly hope that the media covers it - I'll be sure to look around the BBC or if possible, let me know what Scottish news services are covering it and I'll try to find pictures.

God bless you with peace!

Posted by: zeryx 30-Jan-2007, 05:31 PM
Awww you're so sweet! hug.gif kiss2.gif thank you Robbie

As far as I'm aware it's only being covered by my employer's in-house magazine (a government body, so it's certainly not localised in my area!) and my family and friends. My friend, Talie, is coming over from Glasgow and has told me she's got a new memory card to store all the photos she'll be taking rolleyes.gif , I got a new digital camera for Christmas and I'm sure that'll be in attendance with someone too - so I'll have plenty of photos to show you all!

Alzheimer Scotland who I am jumping in support of have sent me a lovely t-shirt to wear on the day with their logo on biggrin.gif and my fundraising is going well

I'll be sure to save all the pictures you post - it's a great idea and who knows, perhaps I could contact several local charities and sky diving clubs to see if anyone is interested in doing what you're doing! I've never seen that done where I live - it really looks like a great way to raise funds!

BTW - congratulations on raising 80% of your amount so far - that's awesome! thumbs_up.gif

Posted by: zeryx 31-Jan-2007, 01:24 AM
It isn't that uncommen over here to have people doing this for charity - here's the webpage of the place I'm doing it with http://www.ukskydiving.co.uk/CharityJumps.html

As we're doing it as a group from work and it's being organised by one of the members of the club we're not having to raise that much before jumping, we only had to raise £175 before the charity benefits smile.gif

Just kidding! You are brave and daring! We are proud of you.
Hope you don't land in hospital...cause that would be a heck of a bounce!! boff.gif

Hi Lynda,

Just a quick message to check if you've jumped yet? I don't remember reading anything, so please excuse me if I missed it.

Please let me know when you can. Thanks! clap.gif

Posted by: zeryx 01-Apr-2007, 07:33 AM
Right ... there's been a slight delay but I will have a date within the next week for the jump. The delay was that the person 'orgainsing' it failed to book it and hand over the deposits and left our place of employment ... we had to take it as far as giving a deadline to hand back the money or we were going to take it to the police. Anyhow, that's all now resolved and have the money back smile.gif we're dealing with it ourselves and directly with the airfield.

I'll update you when I've got the date smile.gif

Posted by: Muircheartach 01-Apr-2007, 07:29 PM
Thanks for the update Lynda! Wow, normally one only thinks of the "problems with jumping out of a plane", and not "who would take the money and run"! oops.gif

I'm glad that you got the money back and I'll be keeping you and your fellow jumpers in my prayers. Best wishes for a successful flight and a very happy "light-as-a-feather" landing! thumbs_up.gif

I could never see the logic of leaving a perfectly functioning airplane when you do not have to. Congrats and Safe Landings!

Posted by: zeryx 04-Apr-2007, 10:54 AM
The date has been set for 28th/29th April - however ... I was unexpectedly taken into hospital for an operation on Monday which has left me with an open wound that is going to take 3 to 4 weeks to heal (it has to be left open to heal from the inside out). I am going to have to clear doing the jump on that date with my Dr before committing to it sad.gif

Posted by: Muircheartach 04-Apr-2007, 12:54 PM
Hello Lynda,

I'm so sorry to hear of your operation - glad everything seems to be going well and hope your incision heals completely and quickly. My wife had an operation late last year (mastitis in her right breast) and it took several months to heal the incision that her surgeon made.

I hope that you heal quickly, but I certainly would rather not see you jump until it does. Not really my call, I know, but all the same, if you were my wife I certainly would rather have you postpone the jump for later. After all, your jump has already been postponed before....

Whatever the outcome, you're still in our prayers! I hope all goes well!

Posted by: Rindy 04-Apr-2007, 01:36 PM
Lynda, so sorry to hear of your operation. I agree with Muircheartach I wouldn't want to see you jump if your not healed. Healing is more important than jumping. LOL... I am sending healing thoughts your way. Let us know how your doing ok..

Take care of yourself and congratulations on raising so much for such a worthy cause!

Keep us posted on the jump!

*hugs* thanks everyone for your kind words - don't worry about me jumping before it's healed, the wound is in a place where it is impossible for me to jump unless it's healed so there's no way I could jump even if I wanted to!!

Posted by: Muircheartach 04-Apr-2007, 10:30 PM
Hello again Lynda,

I'm glad that you'll wait - I know that we've never met, but as much as a friend as you've become to me (as well as those who also know you) within the confines of Celtic Radio, I am glad that you'll not be jumping until you're 100%! I know that your family is happy that you will wait as well! biggrin.gif

OK I've been told by the nurse that although I'm still in a lot of pain we're looking a few weeks down the line, although the wound won't be fully healed then she sees no reason that I can't do the jump. So it looks like it's 27th/28th April ... do I start to panic now?!

Posted by: Lady of the Loch 06-Apr-2007, 06:07 AM
Sorry to hear about your operation, but don't panic! lol, I am sooo excited for you biggrin.gif I really hope you have a good time, keep us posted smile.gif

Posted by: Muircheartach 06-Apr-2007, 10:07 AM
Hi Lynda!

Oh boy, girl!! Well, a little panic never really hurt... The best thing I used to tell myself when I flew in the Marines was that even though I set a goal for myself, if I wasn't fully capable of doing it, not to go ahead. What I mean is, even though the nurse said that you should be close to 100% in a few weeks, if you don't feel 100%, you can always pass and wait until you do. No rush - all those Alzheimer's folks will understand - you've got to take care of you first!

A big hug right back to you with prayers on the side!

Well done Lynda,
I did this before and like you am not great with heights.
When you are up there, you will find that your fear might probably disappear, mine did. Views take over . It's when you are back on the ground that you suddenly start thinking about what you did. It is very quiet on your descent.

Good Luck

Thanks for your good wishes - and Rindy - the good news is that this week has seen a dramatic improvement in my wound ... in fact Monday was the first day the nurse changed my dressing and I wasn't left in tears! They're happy with my progress, I'm healing well and I'm now to travel to the health centre for my dressing changes rather than the nurse coming out to me - so I think we can all rest assured I'll be fine on 'the day' wink.gif

Hello Lynda,

I know what you feel - I've been there, too. However, I'm sure that you come from a long line of bravehearts and your concern for people who are suffering will carry you through this - the biggest mountain to get over always seems to be the waiting.

You know that we're all pulling for you and praying for you, and you also know that if things aren't right, you don't have to jump - so you're really the one in control. I'm sure that if you do jump on the appointed day that it will be brillant and that you will be so proud and happy with yourself - we will, too!

Thank you everyone for your emails of support smile.gif they are appreciated.

A friend has offered me the money to get the DVD done of my jump as a combined pressie for my Christmas/birthday - so I'll pay the additional bit to get photos as well - that means I'll have some great pictures to share with you all!!

I'm managing with my nerves so far by merely thinking of Saturday as a day ... I've mentally given the day a 'title' but I'm not actually thinking in great detail about what I'll actually be doing ... suspect come Friday night I'll be far less collected about this!

You not only helped a lot of people who are suffering the affects of Alzheimers, but you had one of the singularly most wonderful and terrorizing experiences a person can have! I'm so proud of you and I know your family is as well. thumbs_up.gif

Not only that, but you look so darn cute in that burgundy-coloured beanie - you should continue wearing it, just for the looks! biggrin.gif I'm happy you were healed-up enough to jump - it looks from the photos that you had a beautiful day to do it, too! And by the way, thanks very much for posting the pictures - they're great!

Now, have you decided what your next death-defying feat will be? Perhaps if I may suggest surfing in Hawaii? I've done the Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu with an instructor (a very nice lady... rolleyes.gif), and you'd have the added benefit of being in paradise! king.gif

The freefall was over far too quickly and the parachute was deployed

To be honest - I think the most frightening time of the entire jump were the few days leading up to it - I'd really got myself worried but the jump itself was so very different to what I expected. I'd thought that there would be an adrenaline rush, the fear, the all senses stimulation type of rollercoaster ride ... but it was so very different, it was quiet, peaceful and even relaxing - there was no element of fear whatsoever!!! I think that's what's surprised me more than anything - I was not expecting to feel safe and not scared.

Oh - and Robbie - if you're arranging it wink.gif

Hi Lynda!

Again, excellent pix of the jump - you did a great job picking the scenes off the DVD that really showed what it's all about!

As for arranging a surfing charity event, it sounds absolutely splendid! I'll start planning it as soon as I have a spare moment... cool.gif

Have a great week!

Awesome pics Lynda!! I am soo happy that you were able to do it and that it was peaceful instead of scary! It must have been such a great feeling, up in the air and then down on the ground, knowing you did it for a good cause! clap.gif thumbs_up.gif

Hi Lynda,

I suppose that Joe, Andy and Brian were just being gentlemen in letting a lady go first? biggrin.gif

Honestly, the instructor earned his pint that day! Just for curiosity, does he normally do that many tandem jumps in a day? I wonder if there's a Guinness Book record you folks could break for the most double-up jumps in a day? Mighty impressive, none the less!

smile.gif Joe, Andy and Brian didn't actually decide I was going first, I was merely the first to finish completing my forms and just went outside to put my name on the board not realising they took us in that order lol

The instructor actually does this as his full time job so he's pretty used to doing that many jumps in a day yes - apparently 8 is about the max they can get through in a single day due to legislation about when they can fly etc (their licence from the authorities dictates their flying hours).
