Here are my favorite quotes from Lord of the Rings.

Frodo: I wish none of this had happen.

Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.

Bilbo Reflects:

I sit beside the fire and think
of all that I have seen,
of meadow-flowers and butterflies
in summers that have been;

Of yellow leaves and gossamer
in autumns that there were,
with morning mist and silver sun
and wind upon my hair.

I sit beside the fire and think
of how the world will be
when winter comes without a spring
that I shall ever see.

For still there are so many things
that I have never seen:
in every wood in every spring
there is a different green.

I sit beside the fire and think
of people long ago,
and people who will see a world
that I shall never know.
But all the while I sit and think
of times there were before,
I listen for returning feet
and voices at the door.

:) Yes these are great truths, which because they come in the form enetainment,  are missed and not given the thought they deserve.  Great philosphers of history, did not just sit around and think, they bumped in to the univeral inteligence, while living a doing their day to day work.
I'm all set to get tickets, as soon as the go one sell, for opening day of the next one. Yes I'm taking the grandkids to that one too.

There is another one for u Mr. Mc Arthur:

Not all that is gold does not glitter,
not all those who wander are forlorn ....

Hi Flower of the West!

Yes, those are such true words. I am thinking on getting the 3 books this christmas and actually reading the LOTR, instead of the movie.

BTW, call me Paul! Mr. MacArthur does not fit me very well.... :)D

::viking OMG Mac! Are you telling us, you have got as old as you are, and never read "The Hobbit" and the 3 "Lord of the Rings" set? :rolleyes  ::spacecraft Where ever have you been? Next we'll hear you haven't read "Clan of the Cave Bear" and the books after it.

It is true, while everyone reads books, i am delving into XML, C++, Visual Basic, Unix, learning about data-buses, bits, bytes, cmos, etc.

Plus with raising 4 kids with the majority of them born in my 20's I have tended to reading things such as Cat in the Hat, Things that go bump in the night, Golden Books, Honey Bear....lol

I am just graduating to more advanced readings!  ::lol

Mac I read "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" and all of those sorts of books while I was in Jr. High - I was the considered the class "nerd" back then, just like kids who were into computers were considered "freaks" and "geeks."

There wasnt anything wrong with us - we were just way ahead of our time! Now that I am grown, I watch all of the books we read back then come to life on the movie screen, and it is so interesting to see what can be done when theatrical wisdom meets computer wizardry!

Don't throw away your Cat In The Hat or Green Eggs and Ham, just put them up on the shelf to read to the Grandbabies when they visit.

To paraphrase:

"Would you read it on a train, would you read it in the rain?

Would you read it here or there?

Would you read it anywhere?

You will like Bilbo Baggins you will see.

The Hobbit is the best book to me!"

:) I love the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit (and some other fantasy like the Darkover Novels and stuff like The endless knot trilogy. I donīt know how many times i read that novel; must be near 50 times if not more ... "Its not a bad ending, even if the words have been used before ... " Slainte!

Another one which is very true, Sam talking to Frodo on the stairs of Cirith Ungol:

"The brave things in the old tales and songs, Mr. Frodo: adventures I used to call them. I used to think they were things the wonderful folk of the stories went out and looked for, because they wanted them, because they were exciting and life was a bit dull, so to say. But thats not the way with the tales that really mattered , or the ones that stay in the mind. Folk seem to have just landed in them - their paths have been laid that way, as you put it. But I expect, they had lots of chances - as we did - of turning back, only they didnīt."

I first read lotr first when i was 15 my dad gave it to me, and since them i'm quite into fantasy. I play alot of RPG's and I'm also found on LARP's with a horse and a rubber sword!

Has someone of you ever read David Eddings? Great story writer. has quite a good humor, I just bought the complete Belgariad and wait for the Malloreon....

::viking My new favorite quote from lotr  "You'll have to toss me, but don't tell the elf."

I think my favorite "quote" is actually an action one of the trees took, by putting it's head in the water to put out the fire burnin' on it. lol
Brought a bit of a chuckle for MANY of us in the theater...:D

Must be one of the Ents I guess. How else should the poor creature get out of its trouble? But I think they d been realized absolutely great in film (the Ents I mean). Still cant wait till it gets to Skye, in the meantime had a look at website thetwotowers.net or something like that, fantastic and verra enlightening just disappointed about merchandise stuff. :D ::smilingcolors  (d)

I liked the part when the Tree Elf calls the two hobbits "shire- lings" Since our SCA groups are organized into "shires" and I am now honored to be the Minister of Children for my particular shire, I call our children within my group "shire-lings" which always brings a giggle!

One of my favorite parts in The Two Towers is actually not in the book. The whole part when Gollum is arguing with himself is really funny. I also love the part when Sam is wishing for potatoes and Gollum says, "What's 'taters, precious, what's 'taters?"

Posted by: Roisin-Teagan 19-Aug-2003, 03:20 AM
Rosemary,

I love that scene too. Last year I taught my 9th grade students (14-years of age) the "Two Towers". Half the class loved the book, the other half complained. I became so excited as we read the book together and discussed it. I read "The Hobbit" as a child, but never had a chance to read LOTR. I love the movie trilogy...I cannot wait for the "Return of the King" to come out.

I read the Harvard Lampoon Bored of the Rings when I was 14, before I read the hobbit and the other books. I still remember lines from it, like

"We boogies are a hairy folk,
who like to eat until we choke.
Loving all like friend and brother,
we very seldom eat each other."

If you never read that parody of the trilogy then you have really missed out. Probably out of print now.

As far as the Tolkein books,
I read them all while I was in High School, but then long ago while I was at Ft. Jackson, SC I reread them and that is when they just sort of stuck and came alive. I have probably reread them fifty times since then. I just finished again last October when a friend brought down a copy of the trilogy and left it with me.

Still haven't seen the movies yet. The first one has just come on Direct TV, but I missed it the other night, no telling when it will be on again.

My favorite LOTR quote is Gimlee, speaking to Aragorn, in The Two Towers: "Toss me, but don't tell the elf!" biggrin.gif

Hello all. I'm new here, but I'm not afraid to say that I've read the trilogy almost once a year for the past 15 or so.... If you really are into Tolkien and the LOTR, you might want to try reading the histories. There are 12 books in all and the first is The Book of Lost Tales, Part 1. The Silmarillion is also a good read, but I'll warn you it is exhaustive and is a history of the elves and the rings. It is a pretty hard read unless you are really interested. And I couldn't agree more with the quotes that have been posted. The riddle of Aragorn has to be one of the best. It has it all-it hints of the past, present and future.

In western lands beneath the Sun
the flowers may rise in Spring,
the trees may bud, the waters run,
the merry finches sing.
Or there maybe 'tis cloudless night
and swaying beeches bear
the Elven-stars as jewels white
amid their branching hair.

Though here at journey's end I lie
in darkness buried deep,
beyond all towers strong and high,
beyond all mountains steep,
above all shadows rides the Sun
and Stars forever dwell:
I will not say the Day is done,
nor bid the Stars farewell.

from "The Return of the King"; Sam's Song in the Tower of Cirith Ungol

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

Gandalf in letter to Frodo, from 'The Fellowship of the Ring'

Hullo! said Pippin, poking his head round the curtain. I thought you had forgotten all about me. I am glad to see you back. It has been a long day.
But the night will be too short, said Gandalf. I have come back here, for I must have a little peace, alone.
You should sleep, in a bed while you still may. At the sunrise I shall take you to the Lord Denethor again. No, when the summons comes, not at sunrise. The Darkness has begun. There will be no dawn.

"This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stone to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down."

I've recently re-read the trilogy and the Hobbit too, and underlined many passages that I particularly liked... I'll have to go look at the books again to quote them, tho, my memory is like a sieve.

But one that is short and sweet (and in every one of the movies so far) is this:
"There is always hope."
Just watched Aragorn say it to that discouraged young man just before the battle of Helm's Deep began, in "The Two Towers".

My favorite quote is from Gandalf: "A wizard is never late, neither is he early; he arrives precisely when he means to." Why is it my favorite?

Now, I must confess, I use this one on a weekly basis. Picture it: I'm running late (the "L" word is a bad word in my line of work) from yet another meeting. I walk in about 5 minutes after the start of the next meeting and some officer looks at me and says "Sergeant, you're late." Well, I casually transform into Gandalf and using my best made up British accent, I let him have it. The whole room chuckles and I'm saved -- I get to leave with just as much a$$ as I came into the room with.

Now that's the reason it's my favorite quote -- it's saved my butt on more than one occasion (not that anybody asked, but I thought I'd share anyhow).

Mmm, I don't remember exactly where it is but it certainly sounds like something said in "Return" during the battle where Eowyn...

oops, don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read the book! I'll have to go perusing this afternoon during tea and see if I can find the quote...
