Our June CD contest features Searson?s new album ?Follow?. From their website: ?The Celtic-folk group Searson is a real gem of a find, a refreshing and exciting new voice on the southern Ontario music scene. The self-penned vocals and impressive instrumentals on the band's debut "House Party" recording, make for a relaxed and easy combination that is difficult to beat. One of Ontario?s best kept secrets.? http://www.searson.org/ and Mary Behan Miller?s ?A Celtic Journey? From their website: ?The title of this CD and many of the tracks describe a journey of both distance and time. Some of the earliest tunes on the CD are by the Irish Baroque composer Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738). He was a blind Irish harper who traveled throughout Ireland performing and writing music for his patrons or their family members. George Brabazon and David and Elizabeth Power, whose daughter was Fanny Power, are examples of two of his compositions. These "planxties" as O'Carolan called them, a term perhaps derived from the Irish word for plucking, are lively energetic pieces. The other O'Carolan composition on this CD, "O'Carolan's Draught," addresses the composer's appreciation of whiskey and not beer as is commonly assumed. O'Carolan wrote his music when the Penal Laws were at their height, a time of extreme oppression by the British.? http://www.keltick.net/ We have 2 CDs available for our monthly contest. I have both of the Searsons CDs and for those who have listened to any of their music--well you are missing a treat. I have heard them live for the past two years at Culloden, GA. My 14 year old daughter is a big fan of theirs and knows all their songs by heart. This year when we went to Culloden she had her chair front and center during their performances. She even got her picture taken with them. The whole group is a nice bunch of people. |
