Holy Week, Any special celebrations for Holy Week

The little town I live in is well known for its reenactment of the Passion. This starts on Thursday and continues until sundown on Good Friday with the reenactment of the crucifixion. Lots of people in town participate and it is made as realistic as possible. This has been going on for years and years and this year it has reached a crecendo because of the Mel Gibson movie. Normally this little town is overrun by tourists on Friday and it is almost impossible to move through the streets. The town takes on a Medievel appearance (more so then normal) and one could almost believe he were transported back in time to a middle age Spanish village.

Do they actually nail these men to the crosses? I've heard of places that do.

Wow, that must be intense. Do you go every year?

We have nothing quite so dramatic. This Maundy Thursday we will be presenting the play I wrote about Judas. I think it will be quite powerful. The man playing the part is a very good actor and has brought the script to life. It will be an uncomfortable service.

I never knew quite what to do with Good Friday. In the Church of the Brethren where I grew up on Maundy Thursday there is what's called Love Feast. It is a sort of reinactment of the Last Supper. A simple meal (not Passover fare), communion and the washing of each other's feet. We had nothing special for Good Friday. I always thought it should be treated as you described Leo, but it was never within my tradition.

In Pesé they do not nail the Jesus character to the cross. A few years ago though one of my nephews was one of the Roman soldiers and got a little carried away with the whip. (oh well)

I live very close to the place where the crucifixion takes place, so even if I don't go, I am almost there. They always set off some tremendous fireworks to signify the thunder and that gets pretty intense. We usually get back to the house and find the burnt out casings on the roof. The dog hates it.

Once folks get back to the house they eat bacalao (salted cod ), which is the traditional Good Friday meal. By the way, if no one has thought to put the cod fish in water to soak the night before it's best to forget the fish and look for something a little less salty like maybe pure salt.
