Tiger Woods Seriously Hurt in Crash

(CBS/ AP) Authorities say Tiger Woods has been seriously injured in a car wreck in Florida.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the PGA star hit a fire hydrant and a tree as he pulled out of his driveway early Friday in his 2009 Cadillac sport utility vehicle.

Woods was taken to Health Central Hospital. His condition was not immediately known, though the news release said his injuries were serious.

The highway patrol says the crash is still under investigation, and charges are pending. However, the highway patrol said the crash was not alcohol-related.

Alcohol was not involved, according to a highway patrol press release, CBS affiliate WKMG reports.

It makes one wonder. How does one get serious injuries without deploying the air bags, which police said was the case? I suspect we will hear more about this than anyone cares to hear.

Good point about the air bags Patch. Who knows, like you said we will probably here about it for a long time now. Slainte

Tiger Woods sustained facial cuts in a minor car accident early Friday when his SUV hit a fire hydrant and a neighbor's tree as he was leaving his mansion in a gated waterfront community near Orlando, Fla.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the 33-year-old PGA Tour star was alone in his 2009 Cadillac when he pulled out of his driveway at 2:25 a.m.

The patrol reported Woods' injuries as serious, although Woods spokesman Glenn Greenspan said the golfer was treated at a hospital and released in good condition. Windermere mayor Gary Bruhn said police from the village were among the first on the scene and saw Woods with cuts on his face.

The patrol said alcohol was not involved, although the accident remains under investigation and charges could be filed.

Left unanswered was where Woods was going at that hour. Greenspan and agent Mark Steinberg said there would be no comment beyond the short statement of the accident on Woods' Web site.

Woods, coming off a two-week trip to China and Australia earlier this month, is host of the Chevron World Challenge in Thousand Oaks, Calif., which starts Thursday. He is scheduled to have his press conference Tuesday afternoon at Sherwood Country Club. Steinberg said he did not know if Woods planned to play next week.

The accident report was not released until nearly 12 hours after Woods was injured. Patrol spokesman Kim Montes said injuries are considered serious if they require more than minor medical attention.

Montes said air bags in the SUV did not deploy.

Investigators still have not had a chance to speak to golf's No. 1 player, but when they do, "we will ask him everything," Montes said. "We just haven't had a chance to do so because he was being medically treated."

Montes said charges could be filed if there was a clear traffic violation, although troopers still do not know what caused Woods' SUV to hit the hydrant and the tree.

Woods' $2.4 million home is part of the exclusive Isleworth subdivision near Orlando, a community set on an Arnold Palmer-designed golf course and a chain of small lakes. The neighborhood, which is fortified with high brick walls and has its own security force, is home to CEOs and other sports stars such as the NBA's Shaquille O'Neal.

The Orlando Sentinel reported that an orange and white barricade sat on top of a hole in front of Woods' home. About 10 feet away, there was a tire track near an oak tree in his neighbor's yard. The tree had a few scuff marks but was largely unscathed.

Woods, who has won 82 times around the world and 14 majors, attended the Stanford-Cal football game, where he tossed the coin at the start of the game and was inducted into Stanford's sports Hall of Fame at halftime.

He won six times this year after missing eight months recovering from reconstructive surgery on his left knee. Even though he failed to win a major, Woods said he considered this a successful year because he did not know how his knee would respond.

Doug Ferguson reported from Jacksonville, Fla. Associated Press writers Tamara Lush and Lisa Orkin Emmanuel in Miami contributed to this report.

The Press has been slowly leaking out "dribs and drabs" about an alleged affair between Woods and a woman in California (I believe),who denies even knowing Woods. The wifes knowledge of the alleged affair resulted in a domestic dispute between Woods and his wife. Apparently he left the house in an agitated state and had the accident (or he was running for his life).

I saw on Fox news that he had cancelled participation in an upcoming tournament because of his injuries.

The only thing injured here is his pride.

I wonder which wood she used. Also if he managed to get hit in the face with it! Maybe as she was busy breaking out windows. ("Hell hath no fury----") If he did what the tabloids said, I can't really blame her.

See now I would have gone with a pitching wdge. You have a thicker club head for easier breakage and you don't have to use a really large swing to get the most impact. biggrin.gif

Ahhh! A knowledgable golfer. I would guess Tiger had enough knowledge to take one look and know when it was time to "bail." I suspect teeth might damage a good driver. With an Iron or wedge it would not be a problem.

Does this really matter? I mean, this is even LESS than the M. J. thing! WTFC?

No. But it's still funny, though I think the joke is more on the sports and "lamestream" media than on Tiger Woods (actually the "lamestream" media is a joke). It's just more evidence that they all have turned into the "tabloid" media they all supposedly despise

Here's some more "great" reporting from the AP:

I have one question on what little facts are actually presented in this story. Does anyone know how the Florida Highway Patrol has Traffic Law enforcement powers on private property? It's my understanding that Tiger lives inside a gated community which would lead me to believe that the road or street he had the accident on is privately owned and maintained. I've always understood the most the police will do on an accident on private property (example: Mall Parking lot) is issue an accident report. Otherwise the incident is considered a civil matter and would need to be adjudicated in a civil lawsuit between the parties (assuming the insurance companies let it get that far).

I saw a quote from an unidentified source that said "this may be the shortest drive of Tiger's career."

The patrol thing is an interesting point. In my state they show up for shoot outs and the like. Minor things they leave alone. Maybe the report of a woman trying to destroy a Caddy (and possibly it's contents) with a driving wood caused them to think that a death might be eminent! Who knows. Tiger admitted the affair. He may be about to trade his wife, a highly paid model, for a waitress who probably gets good tips!

The trials of the celebrity life are a heavy burden to bear.

So the guy got caught putting on the wrong green. So what and who cares? It is between him and his wife. Why the hell make a big deal out of it. The media is like a bunch of old gossips at an afternoon tea.

It is interesting because of the image he projected through his press managers. Now three mistresses have come forward and indications are there are more. I wonder when he found time to play golf? It could be his fame will be for the ----- he played off the course.
