I just posted my introduction earlier. Just wanted to say hello to everyone in this forum. Lord bless you and pray for the wonderful Navajo people!

welcome haynes9,

I friend of mine in college was also interested in being a missionary to native americans.

It is challenging, to be sure, but what work for the Lord is without challenges? I get calls upon occasion from those interested in working with Native Americans. Two friends of ours just moved to the Zuni Pueblo. They have their work cut out for them, but I think they have the strength and willingness to stick it out.

There are still Tribal groups without a good witness. A man called me a few years ago about working with the Crow in Montana. The part of that Rez he was interested in is very tough.

I wish your friend well. Always grateful for those who care about Indian country! Thanks for the welcome.
Ahee' hee (Thank You)

Oh man, I just came back from visiting Arizona for the very first time - how amazing to find your posts here now, about being a missionary to the Navajo! I did not really visit any reservations during my visit, and I got the impression that reservation life is quite seperate from the society elsewhere in Arizona... I heard nothing but good things about the local Native Americans themselves, from some who actually work on the reservations occasionally.
Tell me more about what you do, what is your ministry to these people... how did you come to be at the location you're at?

Hi Susan from Navajoland.

I will try to condense the story about as to how we got out here. As for our ministry, it is primarily church planting. Right with that goes training of Native leadership. We view our work as to start churches and then basically train people well enough to put yourself out of a job and then go do it again. We started a work in 1997 which now has their own Navajo pastor. I am still there, but he is in charge of the leadership now. We believe in local, indigenous congregations. We hope to begin the process of starting another work within the next few months.

Many years ago, while an assistant pastor in Texas, a pastor friend announced that he was going to make a mission trip out to the Navajo Nation where he was once a missionary. That was almost 20 years ago. It was then that God began to deal with my heart about working among the people. I was introduced to Harold Noble, a Navajo preacher in Steamboat Canyon, Arizona. To make a long story short, I put myself under his authority when we came here and that is how I landed in Steamboat. Our church is actually in Lukachukai, which is about 75 miles from where we live. Nice little Sunday drive tongue.gif . We also have a branch of our Bible Institute on the Hopi Nation. That is not very far from us.

Hope this is a help. If you have nay other questions, just let me know. Have a great day in the Lord!

I have not, but I will. I have heard of that website before. It's one of those things where I have planned to check it out and have never gotten around to it. Thanks for the nudge!

Ah, thanks for sharing your story. Its always interesting to me to read how God leads us to certain situations and then steers us to where He wants us to be! I think that is a great idea, to teach the local people then let them run the church... they will know best how to reach their congregations, how best to touch their hearts.

I'm going to go look on a map and try to find where you are...

Susan
