Oh, and an interesting side note:

No new construction may begin on a new site unless it has been carefully and thoroughly excavated by an archaeologist. The amount of archaeological sites and artifacts found each month in Scotland number in the 100's to 1000's. So much so, that the field of archaeology is very short-staffed. People that are educated in preservation and how best to conserve a site are in extremely short supply. Even Historical Scotland with gov't support and backing cannot manage to keep up with every new find. They have a triage list and prioritize what gets their attention first.

Ok, I just got done reading all your posts. Please, everyone, calm down. The site at Urquart Castle was being modified to accomodate the busloads of people that come to visit each day without destroying or desecrating any of the historical bits there. It is also NOT about crass commercialism or corporate greed. The organizations that take care of many of the historical sites are non-profit.  For many years now the Scots have been trying to make their country more tourist friendly with better signage, more tourist centers to provide information, and public toilets even off the beaten track. They depend on tourism from people like us. I know all this b/c my boyfriend is an environmental engineer with the National Trust for Scotland. He has many contacts with Historic Scotland and various other organizations of that type in his country. I have seen pictures of the site now that the new visitor's center has been completed. The project was meant to encourage more people to visit the site and to give them more information about the history of the castle and surrounds. In no way, does the new center take away from the castle. In fact, it was planned to be as unobtrusive as possible. That's why it is underground. Scotland is one of the few countries who actually try to maintain the integrity of their historical buildings along with making them sound and safe places for people to visit. The organizations that take care of non-privately owned sites are very careful to preserve and safeguard Scotland's historical treasures.

Also, I visited the Castle early in 2000 on a day when it was pouring rain and so windy our umbrellas went inside out. I for one would have been glad of a visitor's center I could duck into. At that time, there wasn't even adequate parking for the coach buses that came by. As for toilets? There were none. And it was another 20 minute ride to Drumnadrochit up at the tip of Loch Ness.

I suggest you all do a little homework before getting so bent out of shape. Sites to visit include:

I have to say I got a good laugh over the A&S description below.

Having hung out with the A&S boys at Loon Mountain back in 1998, I have to say they are one of the most partying regiments out of Scotland. Only the Blackwatch have topped A&S for the number of straight hours of partying between American tour performances.  ;)

It's like playing the Kevin Bacon game...hmm, I wonder how we can relate him to Scotland...  ;)

You aren't going to believe this, but the Kevin Bacon game works.

I went to www.oracleofbacon.org and typed in Ewan MacGregor and got the following:

The Oracle says: Ewan McGregor has a Bacon number of 2.

Ewan McGregor was in Nightwatch (1998) with Josh Brolin
Josh Brolin was in Hollow Man (2000) with Kevin Bacon

Now I know that's not the same as being biologically related..but still, scary and funny!

I wanted to continue a discussion regarding something one of my professors said long ago - Everyone in the whole world is 6th cousin to everyone else.

Did you know that everyone on the island of Great Britain is at least a 20th cousin of each other? There are about 55 million people residing in the UK (England and Scotland) and they are ALL related.

Now if only the Scots in Scotland would realize how much (truly) they have contributed. Scots are slowly but surely gaining their confidence back after being oppressed by England for centuries. They are looking to countries like America and Canada to gain knowledge about how we "pioneer" and apply what they've learned to their own country and culture.

Jenni,

You seem to have some good insight into all of this. I never really thought about this, but you are right - being oppressed for centuries would have this sort of effect.

It's only after five visits over 6 years that I've started to understand. This past August I was there for 4 weeks and stayed with friends instead of in hostels and hotels. It made all the difference.  It gave me the opportunity to observe much more than if I was just playing tourist. I also got to have some pretty interesting conversations with a number of people I met during my stay. I took the train a lot and always met someone interesting to talk to. I also started reading the papers and asked my friends lots of questions about things going on in the news. (I had no access to American news while I was there - only the BBC which is horrendous if you want to know ANYTHING about happenings in the USA at all). I ended up gaining an understanding of Scottish and English politics that you can't get in a classroom. And I gained insight into how Scots and English view America and Americans. It was a very enlightening and humbling experience.

While on the surface, Scottish and English culture seems very similar to ours, it truly is VERY different. And Scottish culture is VERY different even from English culture. I'm going to generalize here for a minute, so please, no one get offended. Basically the differences are these: The English still have an Imperialistic attitude and look down their noses at everyone. However, collectively, they were very hurt when Scotland wanted and got their own Parliament. The Scots are reserved, hospitable and self-effacing - to their detriment, but GREAT fun at a party or at the pub. They need all the help they can get and England does not help but hinders them almost every step of the way. Americans are the eternal optimists and cannot understand why other people in the world don't like them. We have that 'can-do' attitude that everybody admires but is also envious of.

When it gets right down to it, people are people everywhere you go. But as an American, I've realized we've got a long way to go to understand other cultures in the world.

I wish I could get BBC America. Is the show syndicated on any other networks? This sounds like the type of show I would be interested!

;)

Unfortunately I think it only airs on BBCA. But if you happen to get satellite and have access to the BBC stations, then you may be able to find it.

It's on BBCA Friday nights at 8pm EST. I only get it cause I just switched to digital cable.

Check out the link below for the info on Phil McCall who played Tosh on Monarch of the Glen.  :(

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/020129/4/cr6qn.html

Filiming for the fourth season begins this March and will air starting in the fall. Until then I suppose we must do with the first three series in rerun on BBCA until then.

Your question has a very complex answer Mac. Feudal land ownership has been around since the 12th century. Check out the URL's below:

In regards to the last URL, the people of Eigg did succeed in buying their island from the landlord.

Any other fans of Monarch of the Glen out there? It's a brilliant one hour drama series filmed in the Highlands about a young man who takes over the hereditary lairdship of a run-down and bankrupt highland estate. It's filmed entirely on location and features a Scottish cast.

Check it out on BBC America, Friday nights at 8p EST or on www.bbcamerica.com. I give it a (d).

I don't think the Scots will even go for an "in title only" monarchy. Most I am friends with are anti-monarchy, even some who served in the British Army and were inculturated to salute crown and queen.

They tend to look to us in America for new ideas and innovation and then adapt it to suit their collective culture and consciousness. It's really quite amazing - I believe they have stumbled onto the idea of "can do" (something we Americans are imbued with) and are amazed at their actual "doing" and even more surprised to find that they are proud of the "doing".

Probably the greatest gift that Scotland could give to the world was the mass exodus that occurred in the 1700 and 1800?s due to the clearances and other factors. While at the time this displacement of Scots all over the world was probably viewed with hardship and heartache, the descendents of these Scots certainly have contributed an immense amount of accomplishments to mankind.

They have indeed!

Because of that, they are finally realizing how many of their own sons and daughters contributed to the world through discoveries and inventions. It's coming around full circle to re-inspire the Scots to be a great nation and independent from England.

There's a little pub on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh named "Logie Bairds" in honor of the famous TV inventor. Stop in and have a pint if you are across the pond

Yes! We will see total devolution in our lifetime. AND reforms are on the table at Scottish Parliament to get rid of feudal land ownership. Don't think the Scots will ever go for a new monarchy. They are too independent and democratic in a lot of ways.
