Starting this Tuesday we are going to try something a little new.
Two For Tuesdays has arrived at Highlander Radio! From 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. we will be playing back to back artists for this time period. Requests will be disabled during this time period, but will be available at 2:00 pm.
We thought lmited requests all day would not be a good thing, so we have limited our Two for Tuesdays to just about 5 hours of play time.
Some other noteworthy additions to our broadcast. Listener Call-Ins and Musician Plugs are now displayed on our broadcast schedule:
With our library of special listener/musician messages increasing, we thought now to be a good time to add them to the schedule.
Next on the plate: We will be beefing up Rebecca's announcements on all of our speciality programs. I know some are not announced, but hopefully in the next few weeks you will hear a better organized broadcast online.
We will also be working on new Station IDs and Promos for Rebecca's beautiful voice!
Dear Lord, lest I continue in my complacent ways, help me to remember that someone died for me today. And if there be war, help me to remember to ask and to answer "am I worth dying for?" - Eleanor Roosevelt
The ultimate result of shielding men from the effects of folly is to fill the world with fools. -- Herbert Spencer, English Philosopher (1820-1903)
We actually took some auditions, but I believe the people we got sound promos for were Americans portraying to be Scottish. It is definitely something we are actively pursuing if we can find the right sound and right price. Understand that some voice over studios charge hundreds of dollars per station ID!
Fortunately we have all of the tools and studio to mix our own tracks which cuts down on the cost by alot!
We are now starting a complete review of our broadcast. This first sweep will be to "Perfect" our programming announcements. Some of them could sound alot better. Also, we are trying to promote some of the great music tools on our site that make our website such great companion to our broadcast. We need to do a better job of letting the 1,500 people a day that listen know whats going on our website.
Here's a little draft of our plan if you are interested:
1) First sweep will focus on program announcements. 2) Second sweep will be for new station ids. 3) We will then split our station ids based on time of day (North America). Night softer, etc. 4) Third sweep will be public service announcements about our website and services.
Please, any ideas or suggestions now is the time as we are in the final stages of creating a better broadcast!

Do you ever sleep ? All the ideas sound great. we appreciate all you do to being this first rate music to us.
This is probably an old question/suggestion, but here goes. As much time as I spend in the car, it sure would be nice if something like Highlander Radio was available. My wife got me Sirius for Christmas and I love it, but I sure wish there was a good selection of Celtic music available there. Have you ever thought about tying to go with one of the the major satellite players or is it just too cost prohibitive, too much red tape, etc?
Anyway, great job!

okay I'm confused. I'm looking at the broadcast schedule for tomorrow...requests are enabled at 9am...I don't see the disable note but I'm going to guess that it is 9:30am as you had stated. Then requests open back up again at 2pm. But I see at 2:30pm is a featured music section which typically shuts down requests again at least they have in the past....and that runs an hour typically...so at 3:30pm they'd open and then 4:00pm requests would still be typically disabled for the celtic gold segment because that's all pre-programmed.
I guess what really puzzles me is why should I even bother to request music on tuesdays because it seems most of the day is packed pre-programmed. There's only an hour/hour and a half window open in the day for requests that I can see...and typically the queue time for requests takes about an hour for the song to work it's way up the list. So if I did request a song it's highly likely I'll never get a chance to hear it on a tuesday.
So am I reading the schedule right or is there other changes with the rest of the blocked out hours that I don't know about?

1. Where do I find the time? I only get 3-4 hours of sleep a night! Actually alot of the stuff is self-maintaining because it is pretty much all automated.
2. Thanks for pointing out that problem with the requests. Requests should not be enabled at 9. Yes, requests will be disabled from 6 - 2 pm on Tuesdays. The featured music will not turn off requests, you will still be able to make them but there could be an extended delay. I guess, we will give it a try and see what this sounds like.
3. If we get large enough someday, and we could afford it, you might see us on somesort of Sat. radio. It may not be sirus or xm, but you never know.
Well, it looks like the Two for Tuesday script went off without a hitch.
Right now, it only does 2 songs at a time. We can increase that, but we need to test it first as things can go haywire with this type of programming very easily!
I'm also pleased to let you know that Rebecca, our Radio DJ announcer, is working on the first batch of new programming announcements! I have to tell you she has some new awesome voices that will really come out in our new station IDS.
I had the good fortune to hear Ed Miller singing at the North Texas Irish Festival. He has a lovely speaking voice. Would it be possible to get him to record some announcements? I believe he lives in the Austin, TX area.
He might not be Sean Connery, but he IS Scottish and he has a delightful brogue and a wonderful sense of humor!

He does have a great voice and some excellent tunes! We are open to any suggestions for a male voice on the broadcast and we will definitely at some point have one.
We've been working on the program announcements with Rebecca and we are happy to report that as of tonight they are mostly completed. We have just one more to record and mix. A few of them we are keeping as is, but once we switch on the new program announcements I think it will be easier to identify what type of music we are playing at what times.
The next phase will be new announcements about our website and more automation. By that, I mean announcements on the number of people listening, on our website, in our chat room. Not all the time, but perhaps an hourly quick 10 sec announcement. Possibly in broadcast identification of the artists coming up. This will all be cutting edge technology - not too many online broadcasts are doing this sort of stuff through broadcast automation.
This audio/recording mixing takes alot of time, so I have been scarce the past week. Plus have been spending alot of time with the family this weekend: the zoo, the museum and giving alot piggyback rides!
Hey did you know that our Radio Announcer - Rebecca Gethings - has a role in the new James Bond movie!
