This is more fiction than fact I am sure. It is said that the Irish pieists for a while felt that dancing led to "sinful pursuits." Therefore the church banned dancing. The Irish being a joyous and happy people, prone to celebration, looked for a solution. They noted that the windows were high on the walls of each cottage. The priest walking by on the street would only see the occupants head and shoulders. For that reason, Irish Step Dancing came about!
